GALCIV: First Official Update Released!

The first update (or "patch" as people tend to call these things in the game industry) to Galactic Civilizations is now available.

Whether you purchased the game at retail or directly, just download Stardock Central from the downloads section and you should be able to see 1.01A.

Changes:
+ Some random events come later in the game.
+ Technology Trade United Planets issue nerfed
+ AI considers technology trade values more at lower intelligence levels
+ Crash bug in diplomacy screen hopefully fixed
+ Terraformer can be built
+ SDNet.lib updated for those who have had trouble submitting scores. Make sure you register with the metaverse.
+ Duplicate building of wonders / trade goods fixed
+ Added 2 new random events
+ Anti-Cheat methods beefed up
+ Metaverse submits difficulty level

There will be another update later in the week so unless any of these things look compellign to you, don't feel obligated to get it.

Though based on the posts, some of the changes to random events and the trade all tech UP issue will probably be good news to some.

MadMikey, check out the thread "The game seems to be updated". They go through the different issues you might be having.

Go to help->about and tell me what build # of SDCentral you have.

Seconded. Something is rotten in the state of Stardock. Gee, if only I had something to do while I was waiting for them to sort things out :)

You may have to go to tools->refresh data.

Frogboy,

SDCentral Crashed on me when I tried to "Download and Archive" a file.

Will you provide "Patches" and the "Bonus Pack" as a "regular" style Download File so it is less frustrating to try and save to my Hard Drive?

Thanks

How often will the windowed version be updated? I play that version about 90% of the time.

Will you ever incorporate the window mode into the main EXE as a command line switch like a lot of games that even unofficially support a windowed mode have done in the past?

Windowed version will be updated in the next one.

There will be traditional patches made availale stand alone too but they will be much MUCH less often. I.e. as often as they are in other games.

I would suggest simply installing the update rather than messing around with the download and archive feature if it's giving you trouble. I'm not familiar with the download and archiving feature but I do know that installing and running the game works very well.

Brad, I don't think the change to the Technology Trade United Planets issue will work... here is the snippet of the event text and the option values don't appear to have been updated:

Option01 "8"
Option02 "4"
Option03 "2"
Option04 "None"
Option05 ""
Option06 ""

OptionVal01 10
OptionVal02 5
OptionVal03 2
OptionVal04 0
OptionVal05 0
OptionVal06 0

Shouldn't the numeric option values match the text strings in the option section?

You are correct but it's not trading all your techs now at least which is the key. We'll make it match the text for the next update. But the important thing is that it's not ALL techs like it was before.

And you chose tools->refresh data?

Try setting SDC to use the Atlanta server, then do Tools > Refresh Aplication Data, as Frogboy suggested.

Frogboy, thank you. I can't believe that the game has been out a week and we're already getting an update. Some of the changes address issues brought up only this weekend, like the selling-tech-for-money exploitation. Freaking unbelievable. Without naming names, it's been a month since *another* game was released with still no patch.

Actually, there are two different UP issues involving technology trades. This issue, "TechRevolution02.UPISSUE", used to trade 10, 5, 2 or 0 techs. It has been reduced to trade 8, 4, 2 or 0 techs. The other event is "TechRevolution01.UPISSUE" and it has remained unchanged.

I have no idea why people are complaining. If they are ever in a game where they get into a war and have to let research slack (or deliberately cut back research to maximize building colony ships in the early game) and that issue is passed by the United Planets, they'll see how much it can help in some instances, even if it hurts in others. There are other random events that can hurt a LOT more than losing a technological edge. Usually if you have a big enough advantage to be pissed at the resolution being passed, you should be able to quickly re-establish your advantage in the following months and years.

I just wanted to let you know, figured it was just an oversight :)

You are definitely not the typical development company... patches within a week of release... most of the time it takes 3-4 weeks minimum... you are remembering to sleep, right?

Fifthmist: does SDC show your installed version as 1.01?

If it doesn't recognize that you have version 1.01 installed, it will make you download the entire 84.50 MB.
