Alliance Problems

In my current game I am allied with both the Yor and the I-League. The Yor have declared war on the I-League. Despite the fact that I do 90% of my trading with the Yor my senate insists that we side with the I-League. I have tried to break my alliance with the I-League but they always remain my ally. Is this a known bug? Is there a fix for this? I looked through the postings here but the lack of a real search feature makes this an exercise in frustration.

Joe, this exact thing happened to me. Quite frustrating that you cannot break the alliance. I reported this in the bug forum, but I'm afraid it's buried with the 300+ other posts... lesson: do not ally with any minor race until it is fixed.

Actually I found a work-around (read kludge) that allowed me to break the alliance. First, you have to make some kind of demand of the other race that they are sure to reject. For example, tell them to give you all their money, ships and planets. Then, after you have lost a few “love points” go to break the alliance. The next time you return to the diplomatic screen your relationship will be close, but no longer ally. Obviously this is still a bug but at there seems to be a bailing-wire and bubble gum way to fix it for now. Your mileage may vary.
