3D Icons

I want to snaz up my desktop.  I'm looking at 3D Icons, stuff like that..

I see Stardock has an Icon package, is it enough since I don't really want to skin or anything?  Fairly computer retarded here.

Where's the best place for me to start?

Thanx

First you need the software to apply the different packages. Iconpackager is your boy and you can purchase this from Stardock but you will find that after a while you will want to change your whole Desktop, not just the icons, so go for the full shooting match and buy Object Desktop from Stardock which will work out far cheaper, in the long run, rather than purchasing all the items separately.

You will see the libraries on the side of this website and click the Iconpackager library and feast your eyes on all the great packages available. There are more Iconpackager libraries over at DA but Wincustomize has the best selection.

Good Luck with whatever you do BUT don't get drawn into some of the free system hacks that are available to change icons otherwise you will find yourself and your machine in a right mess  :)

Heh, I figured something offered for free when honest companies make them probably has issues.  Yeah for me.

Thanks.

Tova - the coolest of all of Stardock's free software is ObjectDock. It's basically a launcher program, where you can put the programs you use on a regular basis rather than using your start menu.

I used the free version for almost two years before BlueDev bought me OD+ for Christmas, and it's great. Not too tough to get a handle on, and just kewl to look at. It's functional, it's awesome, and best of all - it's free.

If you want to give it a try, download it. It's not very big and there's plenty of documentation to give you a heads up. Plus, with your Stardock ID (your JU ID) you can download new icons for programs, new backgrounds, tons of fun stuff.

If you do give it a try and have any questions, you can always hit me up with a PM or email me at san DOT chonino AT gmail DOT com.

Oh, and after you play with it for a while (if you're still cheap) you can also play around with Bootskin!, LogonStudio, and CursorFX, which are all either completely free or have a free-or-plus version.

And then, after a while, you'll become an addict and start wanting to skin everything . . . and that's when you'll pony up to the Object Desktop world and geek out with the best of us.

Thanks SC, I am going to try this out, then probably get OD.  I get so tired of looking at the same ol same ol.

I will PM you if I have any questions...thanks again.  You're a sweetie.

Ok, I downloaded it....WOW.  Can I remove the original desktop icons?  Can I send them to the recycle bin now?

It's the best, Tova. It really, really is. Of all of Stardock's myriad products (I use almost all of Object Desktop, from IconPackager to SoundPackager to WindowBlinds to . . . you get the idea) ObjectDock is my all-time favorite, methinks.

A lot of the time (especially with the new 'start menu shortcut') I'll completely remove the Windows Taskbar and have an empty screen, other than my dock. Very minimalistic, and freakin' cool. :CONGRAT:

For some reason I can't get cursor FX to work...it says...

"Could not access network location \Stardock\CursorFX\Themes"

I am sure there are answers somewhere on the forums, but have you seen this before SC?

How can I resolve it?

Not a bad idea on the new post. That's what I'd do. Plenty of the good people of WinCustomize will help, I'm sure. :D
