Probably been asked but what are stars for?

Hi couldnt find specifics on the practical uses of stars in game and Im just wandering what they do? Is it the case going through a star leads to another set off planets and what research is required?

also stars can be excellent choke points for defending against invading fleets from another star. I have found this especially in stars that when you are traveling in a gravity well of a star your ships are dead slow because of the gravity (as you mention Agent_Noob_Fury) . And everyone knows now about the anti matter recharge and jumping upgrade so i wont repeat.

Just as a funny note a custom map i made...the phase jump...between two stars take 1 hour

i don't really know if it's a bug or i made something wrong with my map... but sometimes my ships have a hard time phase jumping into other stars... it varies sometimes complete stop then after 30min-1hour complete phasejump... lol

sometimes it's annoying that my ships doesn't move at all even after i leave them at their current command and i finished the game... lol

Thanks Red. I ran my first multi-system map today. I was pondering how to get to the other systems while I colonized my area. Fortunately my AI teamate jumped in a trader and I saw it come at the star. I figured out the jumping but I had no idea about the anti-matter/increased gravity. I never would have asked this question. Stars are definately a cool chokepoint.

ok ill be the brave one and answer a retarded question which has never been asked before. Well idiot the reason stars are there is to give the game a sense of oh i dont know REALITY you since there wouldnt be any planets if there werent any stars you know they would never form or even exist in the first place and as for the research how about you look for the obvious answer on the research tree. Oh and how about you go back to first grade it looks like you missed some stuff. Mod edit: user has been warned, no more reports please.

You call him an idiot, yet say that stars with 41 planets/asteroids are viable?

I think there was something in here about culture for stars.

Culture itself only spreads through phase lanes and does not go between stars. On the other hand, just playing old Allegience does. For allegience, the jump between stars just counts as one phase jump, so you suffer the same ill efects as if it was in your own star system.

A planet 3 jumps away from your capital = 70% allegience, while a plant one jump from a star (with your capital being 1 jump from another star, too) also = 70%

*This is just an illustration and the percentages are not correct. Please do not attack me for this.

Also, although stars can be great check points, keep in mind that since the are much larger than planets (and since you can't make tactical structurs around them), you need a lot more ships to keep them secure.
