So my computer asploded

So my computer asploded

On start up it says something like config/system is corrupt. Its either a virus, which means a hard drive wipe, or I need a new battery for my motheboard.

Plasible causes:

(My sister's argument) My video games, and that doesn't make sense at all considering I'm 99.999% its a virus.

(My argument) My sister and her boyfriend using limewire.

Everytime that I've seen them use it there has been an error on start up but it has gone away from restarting again. When it asploded i signed on my account and my desktop picture was gone. The computer was uber slow and no programs would launch. So I restarted it and got that error message that won't go away. I asked my sister's boyfriend if he was running limewire and he said yes. WTF. HE NEEDS TO F*** UP HIS OWN COMPUTER! HE'S A HUGE TECHTARD TOO! HE DOESN'T BELIEVE THAT LIMEWIRE DID THIS, HE DOESN'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RAM AND HARD DISK SPACE, AND WHEN I ASKED HIM WHY THE HELL DOESN'T HE RUN LIMEWIRE ON HIS COMPUTER HE SAID "BECAUSE ITS NOT INSTALLED."

wtf

Please post what you think messed up my computer. Hopefully a thread full of techies saying "it was limewire" will convince her not to let my sister's boyfriend on the computer and that limewire should never be installed. Ever.

Hopefully a hard drive wipe will work. I need a job to get a good computer that I will never let anyone else touch.

EDIT: BTW I'm obviously not writing this from my computer. I'm writing this from Kiernyc's computer.

The problenm is not limewire. The problem is your family!

altho this is a true statement, it si similar to saying that the problem isn't the gun laying in the living room, it's that people keep picking it up and firing randomly about with it.. limewire is a tool and can be good or evil depending on how you use it.. good (to steal [err share] music files) or evil (to steal copyrighted software).. if you go to www.majorgeeks.com yuo can find all kinds of free utilities that might help you out, even some that would turn off limewire or it's installer if it detected it running ;) then just uninstall limewire, and his argument falls apart except that then he'd install bearshare :S
as far as a personal long lasting solution in your case, I'd recommend www.dell.com, get a laptop and a wireless router, and then you won't have to worry about what they do to the family comp..

best burger flippin, fry throwin, shake maker known to man. IF and I mean that strongly, SHE still uses your computer set it up so she has her own account in windows that she can in no way install stuff on without your express permission. You set yourself up to be the administrator and password the HELL out of everything.
And tell that lazy a$$ whore b/f of hers to go make me a burger, no pickles. And a chocolate shake. Thank you and drive through please!

Hey I flip burger for 5 years to support my family!!!

You choose to work fast food to feed your family, I choose to work at a resturaunt. I've flipped my fair share of burgers and fries as well, I just made more money than fast food person doing the same thing to support my family:) All I ment by it was that he would aspire to be no more than that in his lazy moochin life. No there is nothing wrong with flippin burgers at a fast food joint, that line just sounded really funny, and still does :) Hell I've done all that too just not at fast food. Same game, different name.

From your description, it was one of three viruses. All of them take me about half an hour to deconstruct manually. For non expert tech types, wiping is the only option. They attach a dll into the shell and one of them even jumps into bed with wininit.

At any rate, there is no virus scanner or spyware scanner on the face of the planet that can remove it properly. Such scanners are designed to remove the virus once it is there and hopefully before it takes root, and do a rather poor job in reality.

What you need to do is prevent them from getting there in the first place. A good firewall (read NOT free) can filter such traffic, making your family's downloading habits suddenly 'stop working' due to a 'mysterious' bug. I would suggest rerouting the domains for limewire and kazza and whatnot to your local machine (127.0.0.1) via the hosts file. If the software can't phone home, it can't download viruses.

One other option is to use group policies to limit what software runs on the machine if you have the know how. That would certainly look like a very strange bug to low tech folks.
