ANZAC Empire, 'Bridging the Ditch' Thread

ANZAC Empire, 'Bridging the Ditch' Thread

Yes Well... *cough* I was a little tired of posting on the Aussie Empire thread. ;)

*Intentionally cheesy opening Address*

So gather round all you ANZAC Citizens, Lend Me Your Ears... and your games, Forget whether your accent is more nasally than your neighbours and Post those Gigantic Games on Masochistic Difficulty! *pause for applause* Now Begone and play Galactic Civilizations till you starve, then play some more! Think GalCiv, Dream GalCiv, (Breath GalCiv?) ...Be THE GalCiv! and return only when you have defeated the evil intergalactic minions that plague us and halt our advance up the metaverse board.

*cough*

Yup, Let's beat em Guys.

Dont worry Jaime they are re-jigging the scoring system for 1.04 which will apparently de-emphasis size (which we all know isnt that important :)) and put more emphasis on the difficulty of play.

It IS just a game - dont worry about scores - just have fun.

Whoa... look what direction this thread is going...

couple things.
1. I don't know what American you've been talking to Greg but everyone here knows New Zealand is where they got that big Ozone Hole and where the Tazmanian Devil lives, and where toilet water swirls backwards when it flushes, and where they filmed Lord of the Rings. :D LOL

2. I've got Christopher so upset with Misty, he lost half a point his last game!!!. :d

3. Even we know what Wrangling the livestock is a metaphor.!!!!

Oh my what a cheap shot!!!!

Psst and some of us even know Kiwi-Fruit was first cultivated in China. Oh my!!! another one below the belt!!!!!

I think a good number of people might know that is where LoTR was filmed (it used to be people would say "ohh land of Xena, but I guess Lucy Lawless has had her day).

Other than that - Ozone Hole (Antartica)
Tazmanian (sic) Devil - Tasmania (the other island off the coast of Australia)
I think you will find the water flushes down unless you get a really yucky blockage - ewwww; (the northern hemisphere/southern hemisphere clockwise/anticlockwise thing on which they based an entire Simpsons episode is a myth)
but you are right about the kiwifruit (no caps, no hyphen) so you get 10 points whic equates to 7.34 points in the metaverse :)
Greg: the entire first part of the post is sarcasm. I loved that Simpson's episode. Hilarious. I loved that contraption at the American Embassy to make it go the "Right way" And I know it isn't true. I loved the Frog destroying the entire eco system.

I know where Tasmania and Antarctica are as well.

I supose I should be insulted you didn't detect that and call that kiwifruit a Kiwi in response? :)
Thats the problem with written comments - it's so hard to get nuances of meaning.

I apologise for missing it - all those comments I attributed to Americans are however real :)

Oh and on the water thing:

"Robert Ehrlich, a physicist at George Mason University, expands on these ideas:

"Do bathtubs drain in different directions in the two hemispheres? If you had a specially prepared bathtub, the answer would be yes. For any normal bathtub you are likely to encounter in the home, however, the answer is no. "

The clockwise/anticlockwise thing is NOT a myth.
Not only does water go down the plug hole the opposite way, weather systems rotate the opposite way.
You know, high pressure/low pressure system winds.
Cyclones/hurricanes rotate opposite ways
____

Haven't read the article but know this to be true:
The effect is accurate, but very negligible.
Over the area of a sink, the effect would be dwarfed by other effects such as any residual motion in the water, or a twist or offset in the drain. Same is true for a bathtub. My sink, for example, Drains the opposite direction from which it should. Dang Piece of Aussie junk!!!!.

Furthermore, in the last 10 years of Tornado research, they have found that indeed some (15-25%) spin the "Wrong way"

Hey.. Uhh... We.. *cough* ...slipped to Sixth Place.

Citizen 4D, sorry about the slipping to 6th place situation. I am spending so much time on the boards I haven't been playing! I'll correct that tonight with my version 1.02 game.
Kiwi Greg, I thoroughly endorse what you said. On the G.R.O.S.S. thread, in amongst the smack talk, is a very good oratory by Pontius where Pontius talks about: ALL scores being good; just play for fun; use current harder versions of the game in order to keep credibility in the Galciv metaverse (snort); be evil; be good; be true to yourself; don't skip school (that's mine actually); know yourself; forget your partners; be inclusive; exclude the Europeans; stay true to your Empires's name;....oh, I've lost my train of thought. Anyway, I agree with the bit about playing for fun. And maybe about not milking games for ridiculously impressive wow scores which could catapult one's Empire into 2nd position and ahead of the Lap Poodles*.

[*Note: Empire's name may not be accurate and is not meant to unnecessarily suggest anything unreasonable. There, that will confuse 'em.] ;)

:) Tis Alright Chris.. I'm a hypocrite by nature, I should be playing more GalCiv and posting less on SDC.

Did the ANZAC Brigades have a Motto of some sort? Because we need something.. Probably written in Latin, (Just cause It would be kewl) as a rousing motto to inspire us to greater heights in our search for FUN and VICTORY aga... Anywayz, A Motto anyone?

#21 Instigator where in the NT are you? I am currently in Alice but will be moving to Darwin mid-june.

Ack! Have to go back one level in difficulty, too hard at normal, when constantly interrupted.

Did get an American exchange student wondering real hard about Kangaroos while at university. Just telling him about how when we were little (5 and 6 years old) we used to ride in a Kangaroos pouch to school. Best thing about it was that my friends and I told the story without laughing. :D

So have the Kiwi's heard about our Dropbears?

Hi there!

I'm brand new - just signed up and installed GalCiv today - and would love to join the ANZAC Empire. I'm in Melbourne (great weather, lousy football teams) - can I join? How do I join? Bearing in mind Christopher's comments above I would like to maintain decent relationships with my wife and children ;p and would be offering my newbie talents for fun and not for profit!

BTW, the motto of the HMS ANZAC is "United We Stand". Pretty good, huh?

Cheers,

More re the motto:

The 12th ANZAC Battalion has the motto: "What we have, we hold." (Kinda like that!).
The ANZAC (medical) Research Institute: "Preventing the preventable, delaying the inevitable." (Might describe my gaming style, but not exactly inspiring ).
Or perhaps just the RAAF motto: "Per Ardua ad Astra" (I think the translation is 'through difficulties, to the stars').

How about this for a Latin Motto:

Condunatio mos accido alter balatro.

It roughly means 'Together we will destroy other fools'

but I didn't do Latin at school, this was off a web dictionary LOL

Well, up to you guys :)

PS Will join up (if allowed) as soon as I can, but all this Medicare stuff is killing me ...

Welcome Space Wombat and Albow.

Space Wombat's quote: "The 12th ANZAC Battalion has the motto: "What we have, we hold." (Kinda like that!).
The ANZAC (medical) Research Institute: "Preventing the preventable, delaying the inevitable." (Might describe my gaming style, but not exactly inspiring )."

Gee they were more innocent days back then.

Earlier posts describe how to register for the ANZACs.

And, its obligatory to rabbit on about not playing for ridiculously impressive wow scores which could catapult one's Empire into 2nd position and ahead of the Lap Poodles*. See #39 for Note.

Thanks Chris - found the link in the previous "Aussie Empire" thread. I'm there now with a little "0" - now just give me some gaming time!! LOL

Hi guys - just signed up for the ANZACS too.

I'm an Aussie tho currently residing in London.

Great idea getting the Aussies and Kiwis together - just don't start talking about sport or the whole thing could implode.

BTW the Aussie netball team OWNS... :d

Well there is always "kia kaha" (Be strong).

I presume re the drop bears yo umean this little gem:

These questions about Australia were posted on an Australian Tourism Website and obviously the answers came from a fellow Aussie. Amusing!!!

1. Q: Does it ever get windy in Australia? I have never seen it rain on TV, so how do the plants grow? (UK)

A: We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around watching them die.

2. Q: Will I be able to see kangaroos in the street?USA)
A: Depends how much you've been drinking

3. Q: I want to walk from Perth to Sydney - can I follow the railroad tracks? (Sweden)
A: Sure, it's only three thousand miles, take lots of water...

4. Q: Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Australia? (Sweden)
A: So its true what they say about Swedes.

5. Q: It is imperative that I find the names and addresses of places to contact for a stuffed porpoise. (Italy)
A: Let's not touch this one.

6. Q: Are there any ATMs (cash machines) in Australia? Can you send me a list of them in Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville and Hervey Bay? (UK)
A: What did your last slave die of?

7. Q: Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Australia? (USA)
A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe. Aus-tra-lia is that big island in the middle of the Pacific which does not... oh forget it.Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night in Kings Cross. Come naked.

8. Q: Which direction is North in Australia? (USA)
A: Face south and then turn 90 degrees. Contact us when you get here and we'll send the rest of the directions.

9. Q: Can I bring cutlery into Australia? (UK)
A: Why? Just use your fingers like we do.

10. Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys' Choir schedule? (USA)
A: Aus-tri-a is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y, which is...oh forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Tuesday night in Kings Cross, straight after the hippo races. Come naked.

11. Q: Do you have perfume in Australia? (France)
A: No, WE don't stink.

12. Q: I have developed a new product that is the fountain of youth. Can you tell me where I can sell it in Australia (USA)
A: Anywhere significant numbers of Americans gather.

13. Q: Can I wear high heels in Australia? (UK)
A: You are a British politician, right?

14. Q: Can you tell me the regions in Tasmania where the female population is smaller than the male population? (Italy).
A: Yes, gay nightclubs.

15. Q: Do you celebrate Christmas in Australia? (France)
A: Only at Christmas.

17. Q: Are there supermarkets in Sydney and is milk available all year round? (Germany)
A: No, we are a peaceful civilisation of vegan hunter gatherers. Milk is illegal.

18. Q: Please send a list of all doctors in Australia who can dispense rattlesnake serum. (USA)
A: Rattlesnakes live in A-meri-ca which is where YOU come from. All Australian snakes are perfectly harmless, can be safely handled and make good pets.

19. Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Australia, but I forget its name. It's a kind of bear and lives in trees. (USA)
A: It's called a Drop Bear. They are so called because they drop out of gum trees and eat the brains of anyone walking underneath them. You can scare them off by spraying yourself with human urine before you go out walking.

> 21. Q: I was in Australia in 1969 on R+R, and I want to contact the girl I

Oh and I am actually playing but I only get in a couple of hours a night and my current gigantic game is dragging a little.

Started up lasy night within about 3 turns everyone declared war on mr (sigh - pure evil) and it took a little while to get things stabilised again.

Actually drop bears (ie. carnivorous Koalas) originally comes from an old Paul Hogan skit - Raiders of the Lost Park.

Millions of Aussie travellers have spread the joke to the credulous throughout the world. I once met an Irish guy who swore to me that Koalas were dangerous. When I asked him how he knew this he said some Aussie he worked with told him...
