Just as a reminder here, folks, BETA 1 of Demigod is an engine test.  It is to see how well it works on a wider variety of hardware configurations.

For instance, my default nVidia 7950 drivers that came with Vista did not work right with the game.

In addition, we can discover any and all Impulse problems people have with installing the game.

Once in the game, the strategic features and content have been severely curtailed and a lot of visual content isn't even in.

If you are finding yourself enjoying the game, you should probably not play beyond beta 1 as future updates, will be so much more fun by comparison that it may cause permanent damage.

then why is it called beta 1?

because they are confused about the differnce between alpha and beta version.

They know what they're talking about.  It's definately not alpha (not enough bugs).  But it's not a full game beta.  It's basically an engine test beta.

People have these ideas about a Beta being feature-complete, but that's just them making stuff up.  I don't think it actually applies to any real beta I've ever played.

Really the definitions were never well formed, english is very fluid. If I check on wiki now for example, it shows that alpha is a stage of internal testing by engineers, while beta is external testing. By that definition this will be a beta.

Other definitions I have seen (and always used) is that an alpha is a version where parts of it are not functional (its not a matter of having all the features, but where things are clearly supposed to be there and are instead filled with placeholders). Beta has no such placeholders, and is fully functional (but might not have all the features you want to eventually have), but has an unknown amount of bugs that need to be found via testing.

The problem lies in the fact that different game companies have different timeline when they release public beta. Most MMORPG beta are pretty feature complete. Early betas are commonly closed-betas and the opposite is true.

It'd be much less confusing if they name public beta that has pretty much feature complete but not bug free, as gammas :)

I've had more fun with this beta than released AoC levels 21-80.

MMOs are not supposed to be fun, they are a crappy job that you pay for. (or if you are chinese, you get paid to do).

Even among those, Age of Conan stands out as being terrible.  It is not any kind of exaggeration to say that beta 1 of Demigod is more polished, bug free, and playable than AoC is now after release and then months of patches.

MMORPGs are fun for those who don't have a life. That explains it pretty well. No offense, since I didn't have a life at some point.

I have a life, just no soul... gaming FTW!
