Variety of Maps - Will it be worth it?

I wanted to comment on the variety of maps you guys are making for this game.  First off I think its great that you are providing different scales.  Sometimes you just want to have a 2v2, and others, you have a large group and want to duke it out across a 5v5 map  Each arena also provides a unique backdrop and set of 'creep lanes' that makes each map play out differently.

However - what I am concerned about is, the inevitable favorites that make the unfavored maps a waste of time developing.  Things like Dust in Counterstrike, Big Game Hunters in Starcraft, etc.  Over time, the playerbase tends to gravitate toward a set of particular maps that are most liked.  This can shorten the lifespan of the game for certain people who like to have a variety in the gameplay.

So what is being done in Demigod to counter this?  I can think of one thing that fixes it - and that is automatching.  When the map is drawn from the list, they all get played.  If demigod is going to be stuck on skirmishes however, certain maps will always be played.

I really can't see it not having an automatch system. We are still like 2 1/2 months from release.

There is an easy solution to this problem. Play more maps...

And the problem with this solution is that it depends heavily on the nature of your player base.  If you start up a match on an unfavored map, and no one joins - how likely are you to recreate it with the same map again?  If you want to play a quick game and get it started as soon as possible, which map will you choose?

You can switch maps after you create a game.

thats a good point, but i reckon with whatever game that comes out theres always going to be the 'favorites' and the 'rarely played' maps. So automatching MAY be a good idea. The only problem i see with this (if maps r such an issue with players) is that you might get the ppl that quit the game very early in the game because they just dont like the map. Howvever, this can also be countered, by forcing players to stay in a game for a set duration of time (4-5 mins maybe).

In Skirmish games online or single player, players decide which map.

But in tournament mode, Demigod chooses the map for you.
