DEMIGOD: Beta 3 notes

What to expect

Greetings!

Tomorrow February 19th we plan to release beta 3 of Demigod.

Before I discuss what to expect, let's walk through where we've been so far.

BETA 1: September 2008.

The first beta focused purely on the engine. In many respects, you could have called it an alpha. It was designed to get a scope of the performance, test out the engine features (fog of war, particle effects, shaders, Demigod models, etc.).

It was explicitly designed NOT to be fun.

BETA 2: December 2008 (intended for November but we ran late).

This second beta focused on getting the Internet connectivity set up. It was not designed (or expected) to be bullet proof but rather to provide us with data. Similarly, while the game wasn't supposed to be fun at this stage, we took in beta feedback and user experiences with connectivity to focus on beta 3.

BETA 3: February 2009

So now we're in the meat of it.  The game mechanics are pretty much set at this stage.  This is where we look at balance.  Players are welcome to suggest anything they want but obviously, anything that's a major game changer would have to wait for a future update or expansion pack.

Beta 3 will have the Pantheon persistent universe tournmanet in it.  Right now, it's forces of light vs. forces of darkness (two factions) each with its own set of Demigods.

We are open to ideas on the pantheon and what other tournaments you guys would like to see in the Pantheon and how you would imagine them working.

So how well will the Pantheon work in beta 3? The answer is not well. It is going to take us a bit of time to tweak the logic in setting up pantheon games.

Connectivity in skirmish (custom games) should be massively better than Beta 2D but still no where near where it'll be in the final game.

The Pantheon stuff should work just not terribly well.  Between now and release we'll be improving on this dramatically as we collect more data.

The main point of Beta 3 is to test out the architecture, make bug fixes, refinements, and balance the game.

BETA 3 EXPERIENCE NOTES:

It needs to be noted that for Beta 3 that we got the tournament stuff in by the skin of our teeth for this beta. So we don't expect it to work very well in beta 3.  We're going to be taknig in a lot of data and then release beta 3A hopefully next week.

Up late aren't ya? I suppose since I can't sleep lately, I'll working on detailing an MMO Tournament I'd absolutely -love- to see for Demigod, and would add an extra level of cooperative depth to the game.

I'll be helping! Remember to get some more beta invites out there so we have people to test with!

I don't wanna sound like a greedy guss because I only jsut got into the beta a few weeks ago with the pre-order, but I know a wealth of people in my gaming communities that I talk to daily on Vent and on my Steam communties that would proably love to help me beta for you. I'd be thrilled if I were allowed to give some of them beta keys.

I'm excited.

We may not get to see the changes to Generals that we might want, but I'm optimistic that this is where we can start to produce some really helpful input that will shape the way the game turns out.

When is Erebus back from his holiday, by the way? Did he get a tan?

Which demigods are light and which are dark?
End of quote

Light - Regulus, Rook, Oak, Sedna

Dark - Queen of Thorns, Unclean Beast, Torchbearer, Erebus

Who is ever going to play the dark side

Torchbearer HO!

QoT is fun too.

Heavenfall, that version of the Rook looks like a snake.

I'm going to be playing Oak and UB mostly, but with this light and dark stuff, will we be forced to fight our ethical opposites only in the pantheon?

QoT is fun (with her bramble), but hopefully will get buffed ;)

Sethbeastalan, I am going to quote myself from another thread explaining how I believe the light/dark is going to work. I haven't gotten confirmation that this is how it will be though. Frogboy...?

I think what actually happens is, regardless of who is placed on what team (anyone can fight anyone), the team scores online are between the light demigods and the dark demigods.

Example:

first match of the tournament is Unclean Beast (dark) and Regulus (light) v Oak (light) and Regulus (light)

the teams don't actually care what alignment they are.

Lets say at the end of the match the scores are:

Unclean Beast (dark): 105

Regulus (light): 110

Oak (light): 25

Regulus (light): 25

The online score between light and dark would be:

LIGHT: 160

DARK: 105

I believe that this is how it is going to work, but I could be wrong.

Sounds reasonable, but it must be balanced so that if most players play light demigods it will not get imbalanced because of that, as of course the light side would get more points with more player playing on their side.

I have a feeling that probably will be a problem at first, but once all the characters are more balanced it might not be so bad.

Ok, I'm confused...this article was posted on February 19th.  It does say "tomorrow, February 19 we plan to release Beta 3 of Demigod".  Since Beta 3 does not appear to have been released on the 19th, is it actually set to release today the 20th?  I'm assuming that is the case since yesterday today would have been tomorrow.
