Game doesn't even start (Solved : Comodo incompatibility)

Hello, I updated my beta 2D to beta 3 and since then, Demigod doesn't even start. I tried to uninstall it completely and reinstall it two times but the problem is still there. Does anyone have the same issue? 2D was running like a charm... :annoyed:

Comp spec :

- Core 2 Duo E8500

I had the same issue here. Installed the new beta today and after installing, nothing. The game rufused to start no matter what I did. And yes it did work fine before the update.

What I did to fix it?

1) Click the Stardock logo icon in the upper left.

2) Click on Preferences.

3) Click on 'Reset Data'

4) Impulse will reset it's config data and force an update.

5) Allow the update to finish and restart Impulse and your done.

6) It *Should* work fine after that.

Sadly this doesn't fix my problem... :'(

Any ideas anyone? I want to try this new beta. 8C

I have no idea other than what I tried myself with the reset data option. The reset data option usually fixes 75-80% of the problems when games that use Impulse won't work.

You could try relogging and see if that works.

If you're running Vista run demigod in administrator mode (I.E. right-click on demigod.exe and run as administrator.)

Instead of running the game through Impulse find the menu shortcut and run Demigod from there, or just run it from where the game was installed too. (C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Demigod)

My main question would be, did you install anything in the meantime between the 2 betas, like some other program that may be affecting Demigod from executing.

Hmm I don't know if you did this but depending on what OS you have try updating the system video, audio, and directX drivers. That would be my next idea anyway.

Unless I knew specifically what you had running for services and applications it would be hard to diagnose what's really going on.

Well I run on Windows XP Pro so no problem with the administrator mode or whatsoever. I already try launching it without Impulse (that's the way I usually launch my Impulse's games). -_-

I'll try to download and install the latest version of DirectX. We never know... I didn't install anything between 2D and 3 that would affect Demigod (well, I think so)...

Antivirus : Avira, Firewall : Comodo. I tried to disable Comodo without any success too.

Thanks for trying to help me out.

Well, I give up... Here is my DxDiag. I don't know what made Demigod impossible to launch. :'(

hmm, sorry my friend i haven't a clue. I looked through your dxdiag.txt but I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. It is a strange thing indeed.

If anyone else see this (hopefully a dev or someone with more knowledge about the game) maybe they could help you out. One can only hope anyway.

Hi ,

I appear to be having the exact same problem. The 2x betas were running fine but 3 won't start at all.

My system spec is:

Vista home premium

AMD phenom 9600

2GB ram

Nvidia 8800gt latest driver

One thing I have in common with the above poster is that I'm also running Comdo Firewall. Could this be a potential issue?

I'm not seeing any log files produced in the Demigod folder.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the game without success. Ran the game as adminstrator from its bin folder.

I will try resetting Impulse but I doubt that will help.

I already tried to uninstall/reinstall Impulse without any success too so I also doubt that will help. :( I also tried to completly shut down Comodo without any luck.  -_-

Well I just verified it. It seems to be Comodo that is the problem. Simply shutting it down doesn't solve the problem. I completely uninstalled Comodo and now the game works fine. Try it and see.

I may download the latest comodo installer and try again as I know it did a few auto updates this week which may have screwed things up.

If it still doesn't allow the game to run then I'm not sure what the problem is. I already ditched Zone alarm because it conflicted with other software.

Update: Ok so I downloaded Comodo's latest 'internet securilty' app and installed the Firewall component and now demigod fails to run again. So at least on my end I seem to have found the issue. Although I'm not sure why only demigod is having trouble with comodo. Everything I've tried seems to be ok.

Indeed it was Comodo. I uninstalled it completely and Demigod runs without problems. I reinstalled it with the option "Firewall only" with and without the Defense+ stuff. Without it works like a charm whereas with Defense+, the game doesn't start. Well I didn't found the Defense+ functionnality very useful anyway... ^_^

Interesting indeed. I am running the latest version of Comodo Firewall and have had no problems with it. I wonder if just adding the Demigod.exe to your 'Define a New Trusted Application' list that would have solved your problem. It's a shame you had to actually uninstall CF to get the game to work properly. Actually the Defense + function is quite useful....sort of a failsafe for application execution and to protect the user from unauthorized programs from infecting your computer. Alot of new anti-spyware and anti-virus programs use the same technology called HIPS (Host Intrusion Prevention System). Any time an unknown program is executed you are prompted to either allow (if you know it to be safe) or disallow it. ZoneAlarm,Comodo Firewall,Comodo Antivirus,Spyware Terminator, etc all use HIPS.

Well anyway, I'm glad you solved your problem.

End of ZoneMaster60's quote

Well Demigod was in the Trusted Application list of the Firewall and the Defense+. I really don't know what caused this... :omg:

check to insure that you DON'T have Windows Firewall running along side Comodo Firewall (that is if you reinstalled). Having 2 firewalls running at the same time, although won't hurt anything, just compounds problems if your trying to figure out which one is blocking a program from firing up.

LOL I just had to fix a friends computer. He was complaining about it running way to slow. Come to find out he had 2 anti-virus programs installed and they were constantly fighting with each other. I uninstalled the one that was IMHO the worse of the 2 and POOF! it was like automagical and it started running alot faster and faster boot times. Go figure.

Hehe

BTW what version of Comodo Firewall did you have installed? The most up to date version is: 3.8.64739.471

Yep that's the version I got. And Windows Firewall is disabled don't worry. I may try to reinstall Comodo with Defense+ when Demigod will be released but for now, I'll leave it as it is now (well Demigod still doesn't work for some obscure memory reasons but I can launch it... ).

Hmm, well if you get a chance I looked further into the Comodo Firewall incompatibility. I don't know if it's a problem with the firewall itself or something in demigod's coding.

1) If you can reinstall Comodo Firewall with the default settings.

2) After it's installed make sure it is up to date as far as the version is concerned.

3) Right click on the Comodo Firewall icon in the system tray and disable BOTH Firewall Security and Defense + Security level.

4) Then click on the icon in the system tray again and click Exit.

See if demigod runs then. If it does then perhaps CF has some internal problem that interferes with the operation. I wouldn't be a bit surprised.

I tried all of the above steps, reinstalled to the latest version of CF. Added demigod to the trusted list on both firewall and defense+ and then disabled both and exited the app. Demigod still won't work once CF is installed with Defense+.

It may be useful for the devs to try out CF with the game to see why it falls over and if it's preventable. While it could be an issue with CF, there may be a crashing bug in the game that can be knocked on the head.
