Demigod's Legs...

Long or short?

Not in the literal sense of course.

What are your predictions? One of DotA's greatest strengths is that it is free. Free to develop, and free to play. Because it's not meant to make any real money, programmers make content for it on a voluntary basis. So it's getting relatively frequent updates and balances.

But Demigod on the other hand, is meant to make money. Doesn't this mean there's no incentive to keep it updated? So after a month, its sales start to taper off. Where's the incentive to keep the game alive? When its sales have decreased, is there any reason for GPG to spend money updating it? I guess there's always option of paid DLC, which is fair... but there comes a point when they won't make economic sense anymore. DotA however, doesn't have to worry about economic sense.

What do you guys think? What's in the future for Demigod?

The future of demigod should be similar to past Stardock and gas powered games.  So take a look at Sins of solar empire and Supreme commander.  There are still updates to them and expansion packs.

I think Demigod will last more than 5 years.

I agree with this statement. We aren't talking about a company that's going to sit idle and counting their cash as soon as the game ships. The game IMO is very unique, it will last many years.

Everyone knows Stardock want to be a competetive force in the industry, especially using Impulse. Take a look at Valve and their constant stream of updates, tweaks and bugfixes for games like TF2 and L4D. I know the comparison is old and tired by now, but you have to think about things like this. Demigod will continue to be updated, upgraded and expanded on for as long as people play it.

You're got it partially backwards, a funded game can create more motivation to improve the game. For example , the guys that work on Dota have real jobs and things they like to do, working on Dota is a hobby.

On the other hand, this IS Stardock's job. There are plenty of reasons for support after sales, keeping a game going is easier than going through the entire game making process. Continued improvements will lead to more sales, an example being DoTA. If you recall DotA wasn't very popular until after quite some time after it was released and slowly improved, thus increasing the amount of people that downloaded it and played it.

This will lead to an expansion usually which generates more sales of the original game and profit from the expansion in a way that's much easier than making a full game. Also, Stardock and GPG are thinking about opening up mods, which alone will create oodles of content provided the game has a big enough fanbase. I think they'll be just fine.

Best example? Mother freaking Starcraft. Blizzard makes so much god damn money off that game and they haven't touched it in way too many years. It's like money that keeps falling in their pockets. Good game, by the way. You should play it, if you haven't..

Stardock need to update Demigod because they need to uphold their reputation. If they get bad reputation then they dont get as good sales, which mean they lose money. So at the end of the day, they need to update Demigod for as long as possible if they want to make good money. Not just that the better Demigod gets with updates, the more people will buy it as word of mouth spreads it.

Look at Blizzard (very freaking rich), they are still constantly updating WC3 and SC after 10 years. Everyone will buy SC2. You know why, because they updated SC for 10 years :P

I think the game will come out and there will undoubtedly be bug fixes and balancing to be done first. Eventually we will see the two new Demigods based on how things go with the game ( Demigods to try and balance things out ) and we will see a few new maps.

After that I think we will see occasional map releases... and from there I hope to see a map editor toolset for the game. From what people have said so far it seems the map files are modeled and not built like other RTS games. So, I would figure there'd be a lot of work needed to allow us to have a map editor.

Of course, we may see some new map modes somewhere down the line too... But if we get proper modding tools then I think the fans will provide new maps and map modes. Basically, the lifespan fo the game is very dependent on modding tools (map editor too) as it is very difficult for a team of developers to keep producing content to keep people happy for years to come.

TLDR: Games need modding tools and map editors to have a long lifespan. Warcraft III and Starcraft are prime examples of this. Great games are only made better by mods. ;)

True enough, some of the greatest games ever have been so because of their mods.  Greatest online shooter game of all time.  Tribes 2 on a massive server with way too many mods active... god I miss those days..

Yeah, Stardock is pretty good, I played SoaSE for a while and things were good. Even with updates, I still thinks mods are essential. ;)
