SinglePlayer unplayable

So, a friend an I have just both purchased the game and both of our computers meet the reccomended settings.  We both run the games through impulse and have it fully updated.  My friend starts up single-player and tells me its running great for him no problem.  I run single-player and the game lags beyond belief.  Even before loading a match the audio lags and stutters when selecting characters but runs fine once the match begins, thats when the game starts lagging, like im getting 5fps or lower.  When I installed the game my graphic setting were defaulted to medium, so I turn them down to low and no change.  My video card drivers are updated and I have nothing running in the background other then essential windows proccesses.  We both bought the game retail and I'm not sure if that could have any issues with it, so as we speak I am re-downloading demigod from Impulse.  I obviously am not going to try multiplayer since I know the servers are overloaded anyway, but I can't even play single-player.

I had the exact same problem.  Then I remembered that I haven't defragged my C drive in forever so I did.  Now it works great!  I would recommend trying that.  It worked for me.

i cant even get single player to start. it just sits on the loading screen forever. like, 20 minutes. i finally just alt-f4'ed out of it. it wasnt locked up or anything, it even asked me if i was sure i wanted to quit...

not like it matters, as the SP game looks to be... well, pretty worthless. if id known SP would be nothing more than a bunch of skirmishes, id have passed on the game entirely.

oh and defragging isnt the issue, i defragged after the latest update...

no dude, the game loads fine. the *single player* game wont load.

or are you telling me it has to connect to the interent to START a single player game? because if thats the case, im just asking for a refund right now.

It is strange that Stardock forgot this point of the Gamers' bill of Rights: Don't need to connect to Internet for playing SP.

Adjust settings and play on the smallest map.

I actually think multiplayer will be less laggy in the end, as long as you aren't the host. Single player forces you to host the entire game, AI included.

sigh

clearly, people are failing to read what im writing. or im failing to communicate. so let me try again.

i launch the game

i pick "single player" from the menu.

i click "tournament"

i click "new"

i pick a demigod.

i click "normal"

i see a scoreboard. i click "continue"

i get the loading screen, with the animated... whatever that thing is supposed to be that looks like a tramp stamp.

i sit and look at that for 20 minutes. (yes, 20 minutes. and no, i didnt actually sit and watch it the whole time. just to pre-emptively counter the pedantry i know is going to follow.)

i get bored.

i alt-F4.

i come here and bitch.

the end.

no doubt. if that turns out to be the case, im going to ask them to put their money where their mouth is in the form of a refund.

Sounds like a computer problem to me.  The server issues (which are Gamestop's fault by the way) shouldn't affect SP.

I would of probably rather my game not load then just lag terribly, makes me think my computer is totally screwed up.

How are you sure that "Tournament" shouldn't involve connexion to Stardock servers? This name sounds to have persistent online features ...

BTW, from the feature web page http://www.demigodthegame.com/game/

Battle in a persistent online world in multiplayer or play single player either in a skirmish or in the virtual tournament.

The on-line pantheon allows players to "skirmish" against other players of similar skill or take part in the on-line Pantheon tournament where players choose the path of light or darkness and earn favor points to help their faction win the tournament. Players can also play on the LAN or play custom games with friends on the Internet.

sigh id rather have the beta client back. at least THAT actually worked. and didnt pretend to have a lame excuse for a single-player game. whatever happened to campaigns anyway? first sins with no campaign, now this... :(

Have you tried skirmish? If that fails to work then post your system specs.

Well, Galactiv Civilization 1 and 2 have no Multiplayer component. But they have an online ranking system called the Metaverse.

But if the Demigod single player tournament never asks you to create an account / log , then there shouldn't be any Internet connexion.

skirmish works. takes a loooong time to load, like 3-5 minutes, but it works. nothing like the 20 seconds launching a custom game with AI (ie, a skirmish) took in the beta.

and no, no logging in or creating accounts for any of the single player features. so server problems dont really explain why it wont start.
