What would you like to see from Demigod?

Hey all,

Before you flame, i know the game is hardly even out yet but many of us have gotten a good taste of it and I'm curious of what you think the game could use?

To stop anyone from getting mad let me make a few obvious points.

-Games are always compared to others in their genre, in the case of demigod it will be compared to dota untill the end of days... its just how it is.

-For a game to be successful(in the long run) it has to be atleast 1 of 2 things. 1) Innovative and new... this is very very hard to do these days as most of what you see in the world is a remake or takes many concepts from someone or something thats already been done. Currently demigod brings very few "new and innovative things" to the table in my opinion, sure there are some things but it has too many similarities to stand out by itself.  2) Constant evolution to what the player base yearns for... now this doesnt mean give people everything they want, frankly thats something that has ruined more games then its helped, but one reason the community is so large in other games in any genre is due to a high traffic flow of new content so the game never feels stale.

-I am only asking what you would like to see in the game not criticism for whats currently wrong with it... there are plenty of posts complaining about bad pathing and balances... I'm 100% sure that the people at stardock are working hard to fix these kinks and any patient gamer that has belief in this game will realize that even games like dota started with a ton of incomplete features.

So I'll start, my ideas, these are totally just my opinions from a few days of playing and all i ask is you give me yours!:

8 Characters is ok for the launch but I would like to see 2 new characters after every patheon arch... The game lacks atleast 4 hero types that would fit well into the current layout.

The dark side really needs a stronger tank then queen of thorns... my idea on that is a form of a dark knight with a sort of mirror shield effect... bounce damage back onto someone, where as his damage does not need to be high it would be nice to stand front and center.

The light side needs a dot user badly... they have 2 steady tanks, 1 of which is a good healer/shield.. 1 ok ranged dps and 1 stun support with strong heals... Oak is way to diverse in his skills and you can only go one way or another...

There are plenty of options to further include and im sure stardock will do an amazing job bringing in more heroes.

The potions in the game are terribly overpowered... stuns dont really stop you from using them and even though you can only carry 9 they imbalance the course of a battle for their cost.

2 options i see are this : 1) get rid of potions and bring in multiple use items with 30 second cooldowns that have a much higher price tag and any damage interrupts....

2)turn all potions into non combat heal over times... this is a proven method that has worked for the genre to bring more challenge and less gung ho charging button smashing...

The items in the game are very MEH,

Generals and Assasians should have a completely different item shop.... same item.... same cost but generals items also effect their summons. The current set up is mildly confusing to someone that is unaware of what some of the items really do.

2 boots, 3 helms zzzzzzzzzzzz come on? A tiered system of items that you can constantly buy the next one and it automatically replaces the earlier one would be MUCH better.... set bonus items are also a great niche in this genre that you can do alot with in this game.... having a skill tree that you cant get 100% completion on but could get further on by having an entire set would be REALLY cool....

A weapon slot to have a limit of one activatible item would also be a great idea, instead of allowing people to stack multiple nuke items or something similar...

Break the items down like this :

5 slots (boots, helm, chest piece, gloves, trinket/rings) 1 weapon, 3 slots for activatables, 1 favor item

Favor items:

Great concept, gives reoccuring reward for playing the game alot and doing well, so far they dont rediculously imbalance the game from what ive seen... But make them passive items.... giving another activatable item can really turn some heroes into a burst machine at low levels, i know when i play TB with the staff that gives mana for 75% of damage i do i never go back to base.... but a similar item that gave a static 5% would greatly minimize my reliance on bursting a hero down then waiting for them to come back while i have full mana...

The maps:

No complaints, they flow well and look beutiful... i look forward to future ones.

Skill tree of the fortress is pretty weak:

  1) give more customization into the troops you can purchase... a static line gets stale, look at games like civilization and warcraft.... the ability to customize your force is what makes those games enjoyable and many times over replayable... you keep doing the same thing every game you get tired of it.

  2) the other skill choices are bland and repetitive and bring very little to the table in the long run (other then the structure boosts)... creeps arent what win battles its the heroes, thats why more customization would be really nice.

The ui is strong all but for the generals, some form of better tool bar for their creeps would be nice..

Multiplayer is quite enjoyable, even though there are obvious issues with the servers currently... I see no improvement nessecary in that.

The overall speed of the game is relatively slow... i feel like im walking to kill my enemy and if he sees me he walks away... i know there are blink items but in war people are running around stabbing each other in the jugular all the time... up the games speed a bit would be nice.

The minimap is horrid, there is no way to constitute it even needing to be there in its current form, no way to ping or notify a player when a flags being taken and it doesnt help with map awareness nearly as much as it could. A static minimap in place of your characters portrait would be VERY nice....

A noise when enemies are taking your flags would be nice.

So i think those are my ideas..... please don't flame, I am a long time supporter and promoter of this game as i despise what the community that is DotA has become... I like many of you, just want it to be as successful as possible!

Please post your ideas!!!!

i'd have to play some more before i comment on any changes. but so far everything seems balanced.

only thing i could think of, when playing as The Rook, i'd be nice to be able to heal the towers, but i could see how that would be distrupt balance... unless it cost ALOT of life to heal a tower a LITTLE

Great post.

Your points are valid, well thought out and contructive :D

I don't see anything you suggested detracting from gameplay at all and agree with almost all of your ideas. I just disagree on the games speed. I like the default pace, kinda gives you time to breathe and brings out the early game "mental chess" that goes on when engaging your opponent for the first time.

You can speed it up in the game options when hosting btw ;)

See you on the battlefield

Dude what? Innovation has never helped make a game good, and striving for pointless innovation has hurt countless games.

Starcraft? Nothing innovative, most succesful rts ever.
WoW? Nothing innovative, most succesful mmorpg ever.
DoTA? Nothing innovative, absurdly succesful map.(It's a clone of aeon of strife, a SC map.)
Demigod? Oh right, DoTA clone.

It's quality, polish and accesability that make something succesful. Innovation is irrelevant.
Nothing new under the sun and all that.

I would love to see:

  1. More customization available for the minimap. Let me move it, resize it, click on it to move my view.
  2. A better indication of minion health and player health overall. Icons somewhere to let me know what minions I have alive under my control would be grand, not to mention health bars I can see while not zoomed in almost all the way. Let me customize health bar size so I can see it when I'm zoomed out, or just make it larger period. At 1920x1200 those health bars are super small and it's terribly obnoxious having to hover over heroes to see their life.
  3. Pants. Let me customize my hero's pants.

It's really difficult to work out how much mana you have in relation to the amount of mana each spell costs. A few ideas about this:

* When you hover over an ability, highlight on the mana bar how much man you need. Very useful to see how close I am to another use of my favourite ability or whatever.

* Show mana/hp as numbers always, not just when I hover over the (very skinny) bar

* Show the time left on active effects as a number in the middle of the effect icon. Sort of like how Oblivion 4 did in one of the patches they released for it.

* Can't tell what team minions are on unless I hover over them.

* Minimap ping and more tower flashing on the minimap! Also having some arbitrary numbering scheme for the heroes on each side would be cool, so you can say "all attack 3" or "help me i'm 2" and people can see who you are when they hover over you or on the minimap.

It's fun so far :)

2 most important things in good online games are:

1, support of staff(which is quite good from what i was able to see - lets hope it will stay that way at least for a year :) )

2, patches and new content(free as valve do, or some small fee. but i wont pay 15$ for one extra hero)

lets hope that greed wont win, as it did in Blizzard :)

Simply put: No it is not ok for the launch.

Alot of your idea's and suggestions are good and would improve the game greatly, most were made to the Developers 6+ months ago and still nothing has happened regarding them. They may have implemented several community suggested ideas into the game but they have overlooked so many more that would only improve the game further.

Just a few things i'd like to see implimented. Most are UI aspects and wouldn't take long.

Mouse over players column in lobby - displays players in room in a pop-up box along with pings.
Ingame - display of connection to players along with Pings in a floating box.
Main menu options(to alter graphics etc) in game room so you don't need to leave.
Count down timer on host start so people can do the usual gl hf and know the game is starting rather than setup straight to loading after a pause (or crash maybe? who knows!).
Loading animation for lobby refresh so you know its refreshing.
Clearer after-game communication box that isn't masked by the endgame stats.
A better indication of which player leaves the game (suggest replacing their name with "Comp" or something, i've had a lot of people leave games, and never have a clue who it was or who is left.
Game to remember previous Demigod choice (perhaps a bug).
Camera to remain fixed upon death rather than resetting.
Zoom to mouse cursor option.

Oh, a lobby system that works too *badum ching* :-"

They can't do it all man, they need to pick and choose what they can accomplish, and in a decent time frame.  Give them some credit.

And demigods are really costly to create (i've heard something like 100 000$); they need a lot of dev time to create one.
By the way, 2 new demigods will be released soon, and with 10 demigods it will begin to be ok.

That being said, there are many interesting points in you post, some of them (like minimap issues) were already pointed out during the beta, but the devs didn't have enough time to solve some of them. I hope that future patches will improve all that.

-For a game to be successful(in the long run) it has to be atleast 1 of 2 things. 1) Innovative and new...

I just want to add that sadly the most successful games aren't innovative at all (even if there are of course some exceptions), just look at blizzard games, they are very polished and balanced games, you can launch them on any old computer but there isn't a lot of new concepts in WoW or W3.

-Games are always compared to others in their genre, in the case of demigod it will be compared to dota untill the end of days... its just how it is.

You are probably right, but the 2 games are so differents that it is ridiculous to always compare them, they have the same core, but they greatly differ on many points.

how bout being able to pause in every single player game, i think it was Skrimish where i couldnt pause the game.

maybe killing grunts give you some gold, even if its like 10 each

a small thing im surprised GPG overlooked,

how bout some kind of counter so you know how many Units you have under your control, playing as Oak its pretty important to have your max amount of Spirits under your control at all times

and

being able to tell what level the citidal is without having to access it, i know it grows every 5 levels or something but i always wanna make sure i get the gold upgrade asap and the only ways of knowing its levels is keeping track of how many times it says "YOUR WAR RANK HAS INCREASED!" or walking up to it and clicking it
