playing online is a pain !

HI

So i just bought Demigod today and was excited to test the multiplayer part immediatley.

My first match started without problems and i had a lot of fun for a full hour, but after this match i wasnt able to join any other games yet. Either i cannot connect to somebody or someone cant connect to me. everytime.

So now im sitting here trying to play online the rest of the day without any luck. To me this game is NOT playable ONLINE right now and im really sad now that i bought it to early.

If there had been a demo or beta access for me i probably would have realised how unfinished the online system is and of course i wouldnt have payed for it. I never had problems with online play with the rest of my installed games. i have disabled my firewall and even forwarded port 6073 and 6100-6200 without success.

so i come to the conclusion that it has to be a problem with the other players i cannot connect to or who cannot connect to me. what bugs me the most is that demigod uses this kind of system where every player has to setup their internet perfectly (which will never happen since not everyone has the knowledge). i have seen many other rts games who have a really easy to use online playing, where you dont have to mess with your router and everybody can enjoy the game equaly. if your browser has internet access you can play online. if the browser has no internet you cant. thats plain and simple and everybody understands it. but demigod brings it to a whole new level.

if you have internet access and bought demigod your far far away from playing online. in fact a lot of people cannot. and because of them the rest cannot play online too (the one who can play online cannot connect to the one who cannot and so they are both waiting and in the end they both give it up).

i think everybody here in the forums agrees that this online system is not finished and has to be fixed, repaired or exchanged (i know this wont happen)

thats what i feel right now.

hopefully all those problems can be solved someday.

TheBird,

You are correct that Demigod requires a very good peer to peer connection between all players.  With that said, we do have some ideas about how we can improve the reliability of connectivity for more people (probably not 100%, but more).  We are working now to put together those updates.  Stay tuned.

Thank you for your fast response Zargon.

I am excited to hear you are already working on it. Thats a big plus !

Hopefully you are able to make playing online more comfortable and reliable in the future, thus making online playing demigod fun!

Very nice complaint about the online play from the OP.  Well written.   Online play currently sucks, even the developers know it sucks.  They been trying to fix it for months, it's not going to be easy.   The goal of impulse reactor was so that no one needs to port forward or do anything.   I still having not done anything to my router and the game works fine for just 1v1 online play.    I wish them good luck in this crappy peer to peer online connection.

I hope that maybe they use some 3rd party servers or something to host games like Valve does as maybe some sort of bandaid or alternative fix.

I've been trying, literally all day, to play Pantheon and have only been able to get into 1 game. It would be easier to wait on a fix if the offline was good, but this is clearly a multiplayer game, which I'm ok with...... but I can't do it.

I haven't been able to get one online game of Demigod of any sort yet :(. I know this is not a firewall/port router issue in my case.

Disappointingly the status window is often throwing up various bits of XML code during a search. Not good.

Please change this peer to peer crap, it's realy annoying. I tried to play with 2 friends (1 in lan) it was possible ONE time. We tried a bunch of different settings but it didn't work.

I have been trying for about 1 hour now, can't connect to anyone.

I have previously played NUMEROUS online games (mmorpgs, mostly) and NEVER had to port forward or change half of my router settings to be able to play.

Not that any of the steps in the guide worked, still can't connect...

The only reason i bought this game was to play online since offline gets boring rather quickly.

And online doesn't work...

I REALLY hope this is fixed asap as it will no doubt drive off a lot of potential customers.

Like the main thread about this explains, you were playing host/client games.

hey Odeus totally having the same prob as you not to worry i just feel that the multiplayer idea of p2p is screwed up period.

These same issues were prevalent throughout the beta and very little has been done to improve them as far as I can see. Peer-to-peer is a good idea that's gone horribly awry.

I would say im darn lucky i didn't preorder the CE box .. if not i would be crying right now so totally not worth my money if this persists.

The problem is those Peer/Client games actually let you play online even if they're occasionally a tad laggy...at the moment very few people seem to be able to ever play a round of this online which is considerably worse.

Today our servers were pretty maxed out from afternoon to evening EST.  We are currently working on making sure at least the network infrastructure is solid to decrease failure rates.  This won't solve the NAT issues, but will at least let those with the "nice" connections be able to play.

KaLYoshiKa well said indeed its more of a problem than a solution to the age old online lag issue. Online gaming was fine therefore i dont really see the point in creating a p2p system tt screws it all up.

If stardock dont have a workaround for the nat problem, the game will fail horrible. I think I speak for a lot of players when i say: playing with some lag is far better than not playing.

While P2P might be a good idea in theory, it seems, so far at least, to fail miserably in practise.

I guess it has to do with saving server costs for the company and maybe, in theory, less lag. I haven't participated in beta so would not know the extent of testing that has been done but it would seem they where far from finished when releasing the game.

I really do hope its just a simple matter of tweaking some parameters in a patch and maybe upgrading their servers, but if its not then it might break the game totally (rewriting the network structure for the entire game is probobly not something done overnight).

Heres hoping for a quick fix patch!

I had some problems yesterday. Tried to get into Pantheon but the game got stuck in the finding player screen. Since I had something to do around the house, I left it that way. Now in my account it recorded a won match in pantheon, so no complaints there, hehe.

B)

I did try another skirmish game and apart from some occasional freezes, the game absolutely rocks, even if we lost that one.

From what I understand this game uses p2p, so that means that everybody behind a firewall/router needs to forward traffic. Ok, will do that and see if it fixes my very long finding players part.

I haven't been able to play multiplayer since day 1.  Just cannot connect to anyone and no one can connect to me.  I do networking for a living and I can't get it to work at all, so I feel really bad for the folks that don't.  This game is going to bomb if it's this temperemental in the multiplayer mode -- it's what the game is all about.

Me and two of my friends played two games over multiplayer/internet.  However, this wasn't until we tried like 50+ times to connect to each other.

The way the online gameplay is messed up because at least 1 person can usually connect to the host (whoever it may be), but it's gotta be the biggest pain in the ass to get everyone to connect to each other.  Usually the problem is that after both players have connected to the host they cannot connect to each other (this is with 3 people).
