Game runs fine for the first few minutes of a game, then loses all fps

I know my system is a tad bit out of date but it looks like it can handle demigod from the minimum system specs. Right now I've got everything set to low, including the sound, and I've used nhance to try and wring as much performance out of my graphics cards as possible. However, in any game after a few minutes (usually by the time I can get priests) my framerate just drops and drops and never comes back. My sounds starts to stutter as well which a lot of people are experiencing with the x-fi cards which is what I have.  Here's my specs

AMD Athlon 64 processor 3500+, 2.2 ghz (its not dual core, so this may be the cause of my problems but I really hope not)

2x nvidia geforce 7800gtx cards running with sli

3gb system ram

 

i've tried a lot of things; making sure I've got no background apps running, installing new drivers, fiddling with nhancer, etc.. nothing seems to work.  Am I doomed to fail til I have enough moolah for a new processor?

Gradual performance degradation reminds me much more of some kind of a memory problem than a CPU issue, but you could try to check the CPU cooler and make sure it's not obstructed by a fine collection of dust and ground electricity bills. Then you could run some kind of a thermal sensor monitor while playing in windowed mode, and if your CPU temperature hops to something ridiculous, then it's likely that .

If not, or cleaning the cooler solved it, you could always try disabling SLI and try again, running CCleaner to remove all junk, and then completely stripmine your OS for a test go so that you have nothing, absolutely nothing, not even antivirus scanners, windows explorer or similar garbage running.

If it STILL doesnt work, run memtest86 overnight, and if theres a whole bunch of memory artifacts, boot with one RAM stick at a time until it refuses to boot, and then you know which module is guilty.

That's all I can think of right now, you could post a dxdiag here too and someone or me will eventually look and see if theres anything immediatily obvious that might be of interest, but I must run now, lest the lamplighters begin plying their trade!

The cpu is your problem.  This game runs crappy on single core processors.

Nah, I have the same problem and I have a dual core AMD. Not overheating either. Something to do with the sound code is my guess. If I run the game with no sound I get great framerates at the highest settings, wierd I know. I use SoundMax onboard sound too, so it's not just the Soundblaster folks having this issue.

I have the issue too, although the game recovers in a bit (then repeats). Have to try disabling sound and see what happens. But the game worked fine in beta, so this is just baffling.

I updated my sound drivers which may have solved the issue. Have to play more to be sure. Am a bit surprised because I did update not so long ago, but it looks like Realtek is pushing out new drivers faster than I expect for on board audio support.

EDIT: I also realized that I had the sound acceleration down a couple of notches via dxdiag from the last time I played FEAR 2 (it has a problem where sound is more pronounced in the left speaker unless I turn acceleration down). This probably didn't help my issue.

my first guess would be overheating, are you monitoring your GPU's core temp? if not, i'd suggest you'd do it, get the nvidia system tools and maybe set the gfx back to normal, also i would suggest checking if you really have all the newest drivers AND BIOS for your chipset and mainboard installed, check gfx forums for known issues with your kind of GPU's and maybe get a custom BIOS if that would help the issue. There are many possible reasons for this, i just told you how i would try to fix it, if you already did all of this stuff mentioned above i'm sorry for wasting your time

edit:

 

speaking of game issues, it randomly crashes when joining a game or during alt tab in multiplayer mode, i'm using win 7 atm though, so it might be because of that

So I've done some of what was suggested here; I cleaned out the system which it desperately needed and that helped a bit. I updated my sound drivers and I've also tried running it with a headset rather than the sound card and that all helps too.  However, I still have teh same problem in that a skirmish will start up fine, on the lowest graphics settings, but then gradually lose some fps.  Its not as bad as before and I was having issues with popping and crackling sound which have been resolved so I think I've probably just hit the limit of what my cpu can handle.  Don't seem to be having any heat issues that I can find.  I'll post a full dxdiag here for perusal but I think Im just SOL til I can get together the scratch for a new processor/mobo or a new comp.  Thanks for all the help thus far!

I have the same problem. SB Audigy 2 ZS.

 

If I play with /nosound option everything is fine. With sound and after some minutes in skirmish the framerate drops to 10-15 FPS or lower... I updated my sound driver with no success..

It looks like there is some kinda compability/performance issues with some sound systems (in my case realtek 97 ac) and the game. The /nosound in the shortcut worked for me but to be honest playing the game without sound just isnt that great. Hopefully developers are working on a fix. I just cant see that sound processing is supposed to hog that much resources as to make the game unplayable with sound on lowest gfx quality and then work perfectly on highest quality without sound. Hopefully the issue will be resolved. Might i also suggest that some MOD stickies this solution since it appears to be working for alot of people. Hope to hear from devs regarding permanent fix soon!

I spoke too soon.  Played a longer game in tournament mode and the game slowed down near the end of it.  Definitely have no idea what the problem is. Although I do have a Realtek onboard chip as well.

if I switch to Stereo instead of 5.1 it works fine. Finally I can enjoy the game with sound...

reading ur specs i see you have 2 soundcards installed, have you tried deactivating the onboard chip? i think you can do that in the BIOS options too...

how exactly do I play without sound? adding /nosund to the target line of the shortcut doesn't seem to work.  yes I do have two sound cards, one of em crapped out on me so I added another one but I'm not sure how to go about disabling the first one, which is onboard I believe. "C:\Program Files\Stardock Games\Demigod\bin\Demigod.exe" is the target line and adding /nosound to the end of it just gets me an error message.

Same problems here. Choppy sound, sudden framerate drops. Also a Realtek card with latest available drivers.

Same problem, but with an Xfi card -- runs great with /nosound, but sluggish and gradually more sluggish with sound enabled.  I also notice half second freezing when the announcer makes a comment or when some game event transpires -- not everytime, but enough so it's annoying.  That's SP, in game.  MP menus are like wading through sludge, but that's a different problem...
