Teamspeak or Ventrilo?

Got spoiled with L4D and TF2. Since Demigod does not have VOIP which should I use?

When I host my next Demigod, I want to specify VOIP only.

I have a domain which would make it very easy for players to connect without having to deal with IP numbers.

Will a Teamspeak server put too much of a load on the Demigod PC? Otherwise, I have plenty of spare PCs.

Should I just rent some Ventrilo slots? They're very cheap now.

I have not used either recently, since most new games have in game VOIP.

What is more popular at this time?

I prefer vent (rent my own server). I dont know where you are from but if you are from EU you can host ventrilo servers extremely cheap now at http://www.gameserver.gamed.de/ its only €0.15 a slot. I dont know if the site is also in english and i do not know where the servers are hosted (i guess germany)

I have not used vent or teamspeak with demigod yet, but in my experience the sound is way better in teamspeak.

VENTRILO! I own a server and it's honestly so easy to setup/run. Not once have I needed to connect to teamspeak when raiding on WoW.

That's not my experience. The codec ventrilo uses is much better than teamspeak's codec, allowing much truer sound decompression/sample rate ie. the voices you here over ventrilo are much truer to real life than the voices you here in TS. As a result, there are like 3 possible voices you can hear in TS. Those voices are: old man, middle aged man, or 10 year old boy/female.

Its much harder to tell people apart by the sound of their voice alone in TS.

Anyway, my vote is for ventrilo. I use it when I play and it makes quite a difference.

from my experiance Team Speak is more common among adult gamers and clans
Ventrillo is more for freands who just want an option to speak during 1 or 2 games...
and there are far more 13 year old little spammers in Ventrilo so...

I don't know what you're basing your experience off of.

i am the end all to know all:

vent is the best quality and has a plain, simple to deal with interface but u have to buy a server

teamspeak is ugly and lacks good codecs but u can host ur own server for free

This exactly.

Teamspeak is traditionally for cheap/broke guilds who want a voice program to communicate, but don't want to shell out money for a vent server. Vent sounds better, looks better, and is easier to use. I have no idea where the allegation that vent is full of 13 year old spammers came from. I mean in my experience, 13 year old spammers are deffinately using gmail these days not ventrilo.

13 old spammers are found on ventrillo cuz its better, and more popular...

I guess... but only if admins allow there presence on the server. Would think there would be more 13 year old spammers on teamspeak since the servers are locally hosted and free, and the good majority of 13 year olds have no money.

Meh... just saying i played CS:S and BF2 and Eve Online
in all of them i was in a clan of adult gamers (30+)
and we used TS

while everytime i played warcraft 3 or starcraft or diablo, ive been asked to join vent servers
and when i did it was the worst thing ever happaned to my ears
i still got nightmares about the squickin voices of this kids shouting "HOW DO I PLAY THE GAME"
or those kids that put RAP music "because they are cool"
or those who fight because "HE IS A CHEATER!"

I think that says more about the demographic of the people who played WC3 than it does the people who use ventrilo. Doesn't change the fact that ventrilo is a better quality program. My guild has an 80 person server we've used for eve. Whenever our alliance asked us to use their teamspeak for combat ops it was torturous. In the end we ended up having our alliance use our vent server for ops.

OK, I decided on Ventrilo. Reasons..

  1. It's not another service running in the background on my PC sucking up the bandwidth.
  2. It's very cheap, they even have free web hosting. No setup or cancellation fees.
  3. I can open several rooms and let my friends use the account when I am not playing.
  4. Better quality
  5. My vent server can be bookmarked and people can rejoin in easily.
  6. Control - I could easily ban and castrate any kids that want to mic spam or play rap music.

Demigod is a fun game and I really want to find some good "mature" players that want to use strategic edge that VOIP offers. Maybe this is how clans eventually form?

Go with Vent. Less hassle, cleaner sound. The few times I've ever been on TS, it sounded like I was holding a blender to my ear trying to listen to the ocean.

You can do every one of those with Teamspeak, and none are any more difficult to do than with Vent.

I don't understand why people say Teamspeak is for cheap people who can't afford a server, and that you need to pay for a server to runt Vent. I have run both a TS and Vent server on my machine for my friends and myself to use in the past. And you can pay for a Vent or TS server with various providers.

And again with the sound quality, I don't understand why people say TS uses a worse codec. You can choose from different codecs with both Vent and TS, and providing you use one which uses enough bandwidth, the quality will be perfectly fine in either TS or Vent.

There really is no benefit of choosing one over the other. It really is just a matter of arbitrary preference.

Skype has the superior audio quality imo, so you should use neither TS or Vent ;)

So true. I was on Vent with Linkshell/Guild members of Final Fantasy 11 for 4 years. When I finaly met them in real life at a convension their voices IRL were a perfect match to Vent voices.

Also, you can host your own server on your computer but you are limited to 8 slots. It takes almost no bandwidth and I regulary play WoW/CoD/Demigod online with no lag issues while haveing 6 other people on my server.
