Ingame multiplayer VS GameRanger

Ok I'm trying to find a way to play this game in a decent way. I'm trying to find the right configurations etc of the ports/router to make it work.

I can't play multiplayer games if I launch them in a clasic way from the game itself. But i can play if i launch it from Gameranger. If i log into gameranger and host a game and then laucnh it it launches demigod and i can start a game without problem.

So can anyone tell me what the difference is between ingame multiplayer and via GameRanger? It would help me alot to troubleshoot the problem.

They are both pretty flakey to be honest, in most cases we have taken all of the people that joined to play back to a hamachi game which works 1000 times better than both of them.

The only probably with that is some people don't know how to setup hamachi properly.

That might depend on your ping & location?  We have had pretty much zero issues with hamachi but we all live in the same country.  Also if you don't have hamachi setup properly you will get slower pings because of the routing unless you have a premium account.

Unfortunately demigod works very poorly for medium or big pings, which is a real shame.

We also use Wippien as an alternative, it's pretty damn good and is open source - we sometimes use this - it's probably a bit simpler to setup than hamachi.

Well that's all good but doesn't answer my question. What's the difference between the 2? Is there still something wrong with my network that i can't play via the normal way? OR is the fact that i can play via GameRanger proof that my network settings are correct and it's just Stardocks who f***s up?

Even if you have set everything up correctly you will probably still have problems, we have all setup proper port forwarding etc and used both gameranger and the built in impluse stuff - in both cases we had issues.  They both seemed to work OKAY for 2v2, but 3v3 always seemed much worse for us.

Of course this is also relying on the people you are playing with to be setup correctly as well.  Just install game ranger and see if it helps you..

May I ask a silly question? People seem to get more consistent, though still imperfect, performance with GameRanger and Hammachi than they do with Impulse.

I, for instance, must still use GR since my ping is through the roof with Impulse. I'm guessing it's because my university is de-prioritizing P2P connections, though I'm then not sure why GR still functions well.

Why are these 3rd party applications more succesful than the native netcode? I'm just hoping proxy servers will solve a lot of our problems...
