Be nice to your newbie friends.

Be nice to your newbie friends.

I've been abused by a couple of partners now, who were angry because, as it turns out, I'm not as good at this game as they were. It's understandable that I'm not as good--I'm new to the game. I never represented myself otherwise. I never claimed to be good. I claimed only to want to play this enjoyable game.

All of you were there once. All of you, just like me, wanted to get better. All of you, just like me, needed practice. That's what I'm doing.

Unfortunately, the AI provides pretty much no practice. Its only use is for when you are learning the control scheme. After that, you need human partners and opponents to get any valuable experience. That means playing online, and that often means partnering up with someone. (I do start 1v1 games a lot, however, for whatever reason, they do not seem to be very popular. It's hard to get people to join them.)

Listen. There's nothing riding on the game. There are no ladder rankings. You don't win anything if you win (except ostensibly favor points, I guess, but for one thing, that system's broken, and for another thing, there's a growing consensus that non-favor-item games are better anyway.) You don't lose anything if you lose. There's nothing at stake in this for you, except your enjoyment. And if you do not enjoy the challenge of dealing with skilled enemies while modeling good play for an unskilled partner, then I can not understand why you play games like this at all.

Anyway, that's basically what I wanted to say. Be nice to your newbie friends. Basically, because there is no good reason not to. Since there's nothing riding on the game, any impulse to abuse a newbie partner comes straight from your own blackened, darkened heartless soul O:)  :-"  ;P   , not from anything that's actually happened to you. You've suffered no misfortune! It really is, in the truest sense, just a game.

I want to win it as badly as you. I just don't know how yet. My heart is in the right place. Please make sure yours is too.

Had one game a few days ago... a player was unhappy that it was a group of experienced players trying to play other experienced players. When we got in the game however, there was a big skill level gap between the one player and everyone else. This completely sucked all the fun out of the game for both sides. It's not fun just beating new players over and over again. A close game is much better for both sides. Of course, the one player was having no fun at all, and apologized (Not ragequit, thankfully) and left the game. Once they learns a bit more about the game, I'd be fine playing with him again. Of course if they ragequit, I'm going to avoid them from then on.

So please, try to look for people of at least similar skill when playing an even sided game or let people know what your skill level is. I'm not the best, but I've been around the block a few times.

I'd give some advice, but I'm horrible at it. (They always ask me vague questions, and I go, "Uhmm... yeah?". My biggest hurdle to playing with new players, actually.)

Nice post OP. let's not let this community become like Battlenet.

Let's be civil and kind to our fellow DG players. If someone isn't doing well - provide constructive tips for improvement. Flying off the handle and insulting another person due to their gameplay is immature, unhelpful and self-indulgent.

And i think you misunderstood me, i meant i dont blame you for no playing a ps3, since it dosent have enough good games, then i said that LBP is great (meaning there are some greate games but most of them are garbage), and i asked, where did you get your avatar?

PS: i still like it more that other consoles

Oh lol the avatar is one of the illustrational images for the two sackboys you get for pre-ordering LBP available to the press. The other special one is Narita from Heaven's Sword I think.

The worst thing from my perspective is that I haven't really played RTS or RTS-style games for a while, jumpted into Dawn of War II and loved it, played a couple matches online but it was all 1v1 so nobody to bitch at me.

Now that I've played DG I've played loads of multiplayer with friends vs AI (last night we played vs Nightmare) and have a good time, but I read so many horror stories about playing online that I'm scared to join a game for fear of sucking and pissing off my partners. I don't know if I'm good because I've never really tried... I definitely wouldn't rage quit, and I think I know the ideas behind the game and have at least one character I'm pretty confident I know what items to buy, and what trees I like... but some people take this all so seriously that it ruins the fun for newcomers.

I may try searching or starting for custom games advertising for newbies and see how that goes.

I totally agree that people should always be nice to each other ;)

Pro Tip : if you are a experienced player and notice someone is new, give him advices / order him around during the whole game, I've seen my brother win vs 3 experienced players when he played with 2 guys who just had the game for 1-2 days because he wrote non-stop and made sure they stay alive - It only worked because the 2 guys were smart enough to do what he said though ;)

The other thing I'm concernd about is if I do win, being cussed at by people saying "The only reason you won was because you played as X who's overpowered." I've had trouble deciding what DG to play because of that. I think I know Torch Bearer the best, but I'm also learning Oak and can play Rook if I need to (though he'd be my worst).

Hello,

I agree with the OP. Yah!

My handle is Nearsite00 and I'm a noob. Should other noobs want to play with me and learn the ins and outs of this game together, feel free to ping me. I'm on Mon thru Fri 8:30PM till about 11:30PM PST.

If an experienced player would like to take on the challenge of playing 2v1 against me and another noob, please let me know.

Thanks,

Jimmy

Ok, here are some tips for new players:  At first, you make think that dieing to another DemiGod (DG) is not so bad.  You lose no money, no experience points (XP), and you only get 30 seconds in "Limbo".  So you may think there is nothing to lose charging into towers or several other DGs, because, whats the worst that can happen?  Well, the bad news is, the other team gets money and XP for killing you; money they can buy items/upgrades with, and XP that will make them even stronger. When you die to the enemy all the time, it's called "Feeding" them, cause your basically feeding them money/xp.

So, if your healthbar is near half empty, consider running back to a safer place, or use a healing poition (or even use a teleport scoll to get back to safety).  Don't take on any towers till you at least level 8, even then only one tower; if two or more can attack you, you will die.  Don't take on another DG unless the odds are even, or there is a team member there to help you.  Don't let the enemy DG "lure" you back into their towers, where your taking damage from the DG AND his towers too (try to lead them back to your towers to fight you).  If your out of mana, think twice before you get into ANY fight with another DG.  Remember, run and keep running till your safe or healed; don't "feed" your opponents if you can help it.  Try to resist taking one more "swipe" at a DG your running from; odds are, your DG will die, and his "swipe" will heal up the in a minute.

Also, killing minions that come through the portals (often called "creeps") is a good (and much safer) way to earn money/XP for yourself than taking on another DG.  Capturing flags gives you xp/money too.  Also, if your with an experienced teammate, and he gets in a Fight with another DG, jump in and help, you get xp/money for "Assisting" too.  Just be ready to run the second your health gets low.

If you keep seeing enemy DGs that are way higher level than you, or you just can't seem to kill them, you can still help the team by capturing flags, or killing creeps, or even following behind another player to back him up.  An enemy DG that is a way higher level than you still has one disadvantge: he can't be everywhere at once, so just be where he "is'nt" and still getting xp/money.

Got to this site to take a look at all the items you can buy before playing a game; plan out what you would like to buy in advance:  http://www.scarylogic.com/demigod/items.php

Go to this site to plan out how you want to spend your XP points on your DG before you play a game; like above, have a basic plan on what powers/spells you want in advance: http://www.demigoddb.com/

Also, you can play a solo/skirmish game with special setting to let you learn as you go: Go into options before the game starts (in the lobby) and set the Game Speed for "adjustable".  Then use the "-" on the Numpad to turn down the speed to -10 when you want to tool-tip over all the items/skills.  Turn it up again to a speed your comfortable with to continue the game after you've read/bought what you wanted.

And you "good" players out there, try a game of 2v1 or even 3v1 agains noobs; it will challenge you, and give the noobs a LOT of expierence (and a chance to beat you too).  They might have fun, instead of getting flustered.  You can even give them tips while you fight them.

Awesome post, thanks for spelling all of that out. :)

Jet Black.  Friend me, and I will play a game with you online.  I'll play single, you can add 1 or 2 AI bots on nightmare on your side.  Or we can play on same side vs AIs.

Oh, and here's a new tip: Heartbeat = RUN    Seriously, as you get better, you'll run long before you hear that heartbeat sound.  I think whoever decided to put that heartbeat sound in when your near death should get a box of cookies.  You just can't relax until that sound stops.

While I find it extremely frustrating to lose because I get paired with an inexperianced player who does nothing but farm creeps, I always keep my frustration in check and try to give advice on what he should do. I never scream because that can lead to the newbie quiting and getting replaced by an even worse AI. I just try to stick together at all times.

Oh, and remember that while the AI in single player suck they can still be used to find a strategy and build that works for you. Sp isn't completely useless.

Actually to the team with an inexperiened player, farming creep works better for the player and the team than the situation that the player feeds enemy demigod gold when the inexperienced player get oneself killed by the enemy.

Yes, but the point is that he does nothing but farm creeps. I'm fighting the enemy and he just stands there and watches. I almost have him beat anyway but then his team mate comes to help and they both kill me. If he had actually helped we could have killed enemy #1 easily and possibly even both of them. Instead all he does is farm. No flag capping, no tower pushing, no citadel upgrades, nothing. Naturally I don't want him to act like the terminator and get killed over and over again but at the same time I want him to help a little. But he was a noob, so I don't really blame him.

Well, if your new, you might think you actually "are" helping, by killing all those creeps.  I thought they might be pretty dangerous my first couple games (I think I actually ran away the first time I saw a group of them comming towards me).  And yes, you want them to help in a battle, but they may just be overwealmed.  Best I hope for is they kill the creeps, and perhaps, maybe, put some money in the citadel (if they even know how to do that yet).

On the other side of the coin, I lost ALL 5 games I played today.  Custom games; most with "prearanged" teams and favor items on.  It's difficult to have hope for winning a game, when within 3 mins (after I bought the boots of speed as my first item) you can't run away, and you get killed in 2 swings (and they run right through your towers, HOW do they do that?).  Makes "me" feel like a noob all over again.

I played my first off-line skirmish last night and had a blast. Those that have offered to play with newbies may see some friend requests coming in within the next week or so from me. :)

I once was in a Pantheon game with a guy who constantly told me: "call miss". I asked what he meant and then he bitched about how I am a noob and feeding the enemy (ignoring the fact that I made 2 kills and he made none). His explanation was still unclear after that and I always thought he told me to call a spell called 'miss'. After all, this is Demigod, an RTSRPG.

What he actually meant was, that I should notify him, if my "lane opponent" was "missing" and therefore probably ganking up on him. I don't know why it was hard for him to explain that more clearly.

Guess demigod is doing good, we got the crazy people that try to make up new terms.
