Why does the game now use so much bandwidth when connecting?

Since however many patches ago the game seems to use a rediculous amount of bandwidth when its trying to connect.  I run a ping to google.com alongside it and it times out whenever the game is trying to connect to people.

In addition, 9/10 the host will boot me because it lags me out in the lobby and gives me a ping reading of 10,000ms or something equally stupid.

I think this applys to a lot of other programs not just DG, programs just love fighting over Bandwidth. I firewall everything but DG when playing.

"dont ping google when ur joining"

Because that uses so much bandwidth huh?
End of GnomeChomp's quote

No, because it's distracting you from the game

What kind of connection do you have? What's your upstream like? Router? If possible, try connecting directly to your modem, without going through the router, and disable the firewall. If that helps, you may try plugging in the different systems again and see which is responsible. To me, it sounds like a substandard router unable to cope with all connections, but I could be off.

Could also be caused by some other application packet sniffing (Google Desktop?).
