Armor Vs Power

Is there any way, using Items, to be able to get enough defense to match the attack power in later games? With increased attack speed and power from Items, and the Demigod's themselves, it seems almost impossible to build a good tank.

Even with QoT at full shield I get torn apart WAY to fast late game. I just had a game yesterday where I got taken out AT the crystal even with the shield. I like to play a good support/tank to help the team, but the game seems to lend itself to massive damge and insane attack speed more then soaking and tanking.

Any ideas on this would be a great help.

In my opinion, I don't think there really can be a "tank". Your best bet would probably be to look at particular characters, and if you truly want to be able to just absorb damage, stack armor/health/health regen items.

Rook and Oak are probably going to be the two best picks(in my opinion).

I agree that the game appears to be damage based, but I believe that is the purpose of having support characters like Sedna, Queen of Thorns, and the Citadel's Priests.

Moreso, this isn't like one of the MMO's where tanking saves the masses. As far as I'm aware, not a single character offers an ability to take damage for a teammate or something as tankish. Having 4k hit points doesn't necessarily matter when there are three people wailing on your Healer. Your best bet is to have enough damage or control to hold your opponent down or kill them.

My opinion.

I am not sure if armor scales onto damage taken on the shield.

The item you are looking for is the Bulwark of Somethingorother, a 16k artifact that reduces all damage taken by 25% among other things.

It's very expensive though.

It's the DotA dilemma, it tends to be easier to buff your attack than your defense when it comes to items.

At the point where players are stacking multiple attack speed and damage artifacts and landing crits on a regular basis, no.  No amount of tanking is likely to save you.

Up until that point, barriers, healing, and damage soaking are good ways to ensure that the game doesn't last that long.  There's a lot to be said for being damn near invincible in the early-game.  Most games really shouldn't be lasting long enough for people to be stacking Ashkandors and such if the players are actually playing to win.

You want Lifesteal for that. Equip the following items:

  • Bloodstone Ring (+400 Health +3% Lifesteal)
  • Narmoth's Ring (+20 Health/Sec +750 Health +8% Lifesteal)
  • Orb of Defiance (+500 Health +500 Mana use for 5 second of invulnerability)

Many artifacts are also good. Mage Slayer is a less expensive Lifesteal artifact. Girdle of Giants gives +1600 Health, and Bulwark of Ages reduces all damage by 25%.
