New Item Idea: Smoke Machine (with Pics)

like all great inventions you have to start with a problem.  in this case i was reading a lot of compaints about the lack of skill needed to excape an enemy... basicly if he's faster, you die... if your faster, you live.  so i tried to come up with some ideas for ways for DG's to "dodge" enemies.  i then came across a comment saying that Demigods is build using "Fog of War" rather than "Line of Sight", meaning you can't have tree's to hide behind (correct me if i'm wrong)

either way i came up with an idea to "extend" the fog of war so you can use it to excape.  i call it the Smoke Machine

New Item: Smoke Machine

(the actual stats on this little baby are still under thought but for now my base idea for it is this:)

(Picture may Vary, LOL)

Cost: 500g

HP: 1000

Usable: Yes

Effect: Causes a thick smoke to surround the machine reducing field of vision by half.

Smoke

how on earth does this little thing cause you to have 1/2 FoV (Field of Vision)?  well the basic idea is like its said... it emits smoke which causes enemies to have lower vision.  not sure how GPG would go around programming it so i will just try to explain the mechanics of it as best i can.

best way for that is by example:

say we have a DG and he is running away from TB on Prision.  now normaly anyone with low move speed would be dead... D... E... A... D... dead. however... this DG is smart and has bought a Smock Machine.   so as soon as he sees TB he thows down the SM (Smoke Machine) and makes his escape.  now normaly without the SM, TB's vision would look like this:

Here you can see TB has clear of the flag.... which would be around where the enemy DG is.  however with the SM, TB's FoV is patialy blocked looking like this (without the lines):

here the red lines are the original FoV and the purple line/circle is the smoke from the SM (star).  so like said before the SM creates smoke that reduces sight by 1/2.  here the blue line is 1/2 of TB's FoV.  TB will always be able to see in this circle however when in range of the SM that area of vision will be blocked.  so as you can see TB can NO LONGER see the flag  as well as where the DG would be.

another example would looke like this:

(Normal Vision of TB)

(With 2 SM's in area)

Here the Blue line is what TB is able to see... with the purple lines showing the SM.  the enemy has placed two machines down here causing  for two areas of smoke.

i think tactics like creating mazes in the fog could allow for DG's the "dodge" faster enemies.  also traps/ambushes/escapes/pushes could be exicuted from within the smoke, keeping the enemies on their toes.

Food for Thought

so many things need to be clears for this... for example i gave the SM health... however is it better for this thing to be always around... or maybe expire after a while... or untill it is destroyed. and if it expires how long should it last?  any ideas?

also any suggestions of the price and quantity?  like should these come in 3 packs?

wat about allies? shoudl they be able to see into the smoked area? or should they have 1/2 FoV as well?

(Possible Favour Item)

another idea that comes with this would be having a Favor Item that allows DG's the creat a smoke screen aroudn themselves for a limit amount of time (all ninja like :ninja: ).   this way the smoke is say 30 yards in diameter around the DG and moves depending to the DG, creating a moving cloud of smoke.

anyway always open to suggestions and critizism.... let me know what you think.

Epic MSPaint win.

On topic: It is a very nifty idea. It would be VERY powerful, however, depending on its implementation.

Edit: On closer inspection, you probably used photoshop. =/ The spirit of my comment remains.

Also you wouldn't want to carry it around, because then people would just be able to guess where you are based on how their fog moves. It'd have to be something that lingers in an area.

Good idea!  And they should use your pic of the sm in the game. :)

I can easily imagine one of Occulus's abilities to be similar to this effect.

If you want to change the world, ask a Scot.

True, BUT the point is that even if they can deduced where you are, they cant see you, and therefore cannot target you.

*coughsnipecough*

My question is, should either the consumable or the favor item override Regulus's bug? And what about those little consumable towers of sight, and the Goggles favor item? Lastly, how does it affect buildings, friendly flags, and creeps' field of view?

brilliant!!!

would love to see this implemented. either as the original item or as and Oculus ability. or both.

as to how, i think you're on the right track with your current price. i'd change health for a timer (40 secs??) to represent how the smoke disapates over time.

i'd say it would only affect enemy DG (blag: the kit comes with a set of IR googles for your team =p).

another idea would be minions traveling though a patch of smoke would be slowed/get lost and be put off course...

I think this is a rather powerfull item. It might enable a caster DG to stand outside the smoke machine and shoot at the DG inside, and that DG wouldn't really know where the attacks are coming from (in some situations). I think its fine if it affects everybody. The caster (of the SM) will still know where people are, whereas people that trigger it (imagine if it could be triggered! ;)) would be caught off guard.

Seriously good idea... It's kinda like dota's sentry wards but then in reverse;) I know it'd rapidly conquer a slot in my inventory...

This is undoubtably the best idea I have seen. Granted, I'm not sure exactly how it should best be implemented (health v timer say -- I prefer timer myself). Also, if the goggles favor item broke the smoke screen effect, that might actually make it a usable/useful favor item.

Either way, I think this could really improve the depth of the game. Great idea! (And shop skills).
