Help with port forwarding

Hey all -

I have a linksys router and I set up the port forwarding to the correct ports (6073-6200) and activated it, but PFchecker is still saying that the port is closed. This leads me to believe that my Westell DSL modem is also acting as a router and blocking the game from access to the ports. I can't find the users manual for the modem, and can't seem to find anything online. I'm looking for the IP address of the modem so I can configure the port forwarding. My problem is that I can connect to everyone in multiplayer but nobody can connect to me. I isolated the problem, which as I said is the ports being closed, but I am running into a wall. Does anyone have a Westell model B90-210030-04S2 who can help me with this?

hmmm... so your setup is a westell modem with port forwarding AND a router with port forwarding?  Ugh.  If that's the case, can you change your setup for a moment, remove your router from the mix, and connect directly to your modem.

I found this http://www.voip.com/help/Residential/Installation/Networking/westell_port_fwd.aspx and it seems to contain some basic info (including the ip that modem can typically be found on 192.168.1.1).  The problem may be that your router has the exact same IP, so you can't properly forward.

You'll want to have a static IP setup if you have not done so already.  That might be your entire problem (I don't know, but you didn't mention static ip... more info at www.portfoward.com).  If you already have that configured, then go change your network config as described and see if you can log into your modem and what settings are there.  I'm not entirely sure what your options will be though... if both your router and your modem as accessible via the same IP... hmm.

Do you have the option to only connect through the westell (I'm not familiar with it... does it have ethernet ports... wireless, etc)... just not sure what your network looks like.

What do you mean by static IP? As in my PC's IP? I'm pretty sure it's all set up. Also, I can't get to 192.168.1.1, it just shows IE can't connect to it.

Make sure that you are removing the "http://" bit when you are punching an IP into a browser.

read this http://www.portforward.com/help/pfprogression.htm 1st.  Seriously - read it and make sure you understand it.  It will make clear what static IP is.  Consider google your best friend and me a distant cousin.  Glad to help as much as I am able though.

Your router should have a page that tells you its status.  On that page look for something along the lines of "domain name server".  That ought to be where your router is connecting to, in this case your modem.  If you enter that IP as an URL, it should allow you to log in to your modem.  Once in there, look to see if anything might prevent those ports from being opened.  If there is a NAT tab, that should be all you need to mess with.  In here look to see if there is any way to loosen the NAT (do NOT turn it off), or forward ports.  The port you want to forward to can be found on your router status page.  Look for the IP address of the routers internet port.  That is the IP you want to forward to in your modem.  Hope this helps.  Just don't touch anything you are not sure of.

Okay - I have a static IP. I went to my linksys router page, everything is as everyone says it should be, 6073-6200 open (supposedly). I used the impulse setup to put in 6100-6200. I have done freakin EVERYTHING that I can think of. I tried to disconnect my linksys router and get to my modem but I talked to my stepdad, who does tech support for a living, and he doesn't think it's the modem. Besides, I couldn't connect to the modem anyway, the IP still didn't work. Any other bright ideas, guys? I'm about to throw my computer out the window.

P.S. why can't I find a phone number for Demigod customer support? That might help...

Connect to your modem in the way I described.  You can connect your computer directly to your modem, but it is not necessary.  For future refence, you can you type "ipconfig /all" in CMD without the "" to see your what your computer is connected to.

I'm tapped... ineverdie seems to think he can help, so best of luck.  Worst case, I'm pretty sure they will provide a refund if you can't get it working.

Okay Ineverdie, I found what you were talking about and enabled a NAT for Demigod with start 6073 and end 6200... It's also asking for a base host port... What should I put in there?

Scratch that, all ports are now open, checked them with portcheck. Unfotunately, I'm still having the connection issues. People can't connect to me.

Glad to hear you got your ports open.  As far as people still being unable to connect, it may be that the problem is on their end.  I have noticed that sometimes two people simply will not connect to each other but they can connect to every one else.  I am not really sure what is causing it though.

Hey man, I recently ran into some issues with Demigod when I had a bunch of friends over to do a bit of a Friday night LAN/Drinking party. For some reason we were having issues getting everyone hooked up and functioning. I was able to get two people on, but coulnd't get the 3rd or the 4th.

Thankfully one of my friends was around who knew a bit more about Routers than I did. I own a Linksys WRT54G2-V1 and what we did was we opened the ports through the Port Triggering and removed all of the port info from the forwarding area. This worked like a charm and I haven't had an issue since.

Not sure if this will help, but it's worth a try.
