Need help with my lategame oak

My build - i play the assassin type till lvl 11 (pen/shield/surge).  Once those are maxxed i start taking raise dead and a rank of soul power.

I hit my power band around level 7-12 once i get some mana helms, but then peter off around 14 as other DG's start to catch up.  Something is wrong with my itemization or my skill points after lvl 12.  This is obviously not how oak is supposed to operate, so Id like your opinion.

Item order

monks

currency 1

bldg def 1 (have to get these two , if I dontwho knows if the partners ever will)

vlemish

planar

At this point i begin to rape face

1750 chestpiece

HoL

at this point im buying whatever is needed in the game.  Sometimes boots of speed, sometimes wand of speed.  Sometimes mage slayer or catas/giants etc. If i have the money i pick up the gloves of dar fur for my swarm of spirits.

My problem is, if the other team gets giants and its a tug of war, I fall behind in some cases at this point while i should be getting more powerful relative to the opposition.  I believe its because of my long love affair with UB, where I ended the games quick without having to move on to the second tier of items. Therefore while in my mind, im expert at beginning item order, when the lategame comes Im just Wtf.

Any advice on build after 12 or itemization would be appreciated thanks.

Since you didn't mention it: You should always get Mint 1 (gold upgrade) as soon as you reach war rank 3.

Other than that Heart of Life is an obvious choice for Oak, pretty much a must have item. You know: Shield + HoL.

Other than that you may take Namoth's Ring, Unbreakable Boots.

Later Mageslayer/Girdle of the Giants/Bracelet of Rage (crazy with Surge of Faith)/Bulwark of the Ages/Ashkandor whichever you prefer and can afford.

When the enemy has giants you'll obviously want to max out your Surge for maximum aoe damage.

Take your time on http://www.demigoddb.com/ to check out all items.

Hrmm,

As an oak you should definitely try and communicate to your teammates to buy the currency/building upgrades. Honestly, the quicker you get your two hats, the better.

I've also noticed that I have much less success with oak when I play him as a hybrid. If you're gonna go assasin build 1-10, you might as well go forward with it 11-17. Optimize your item build for Speed and ganking potential even at the expense of your tank. Max out Divine justice, it really allows you to push the envelope by taking on riskier tower dives when you know you can get a great heal after the kill. Don't bother with narmor ring in this build. Get last stand for the inevitible mistake you'll make when your aggressive behavior gets punished. The 1.5k chest piece is better than the 1.7k for assasin build, since if gives you armor to help mitigate tower/rightclick damage.

If you go minion build, you've gotta understand that the demigod ui blows for minion micro... Why does it suck?

A. You can't set control groups.
B. Its difficult to see exactly which units you're controlling(no unit boxes or anything)
C. You can't queue commands,
1c. if you try to chain too many inputs at once, you run into the "MY FREAKING CHARACTER stopped and couldn't cast, attack, activate wand of speed etc issues.

While your spirits move super fast... they can't attack while moving. Therefore, you would need to micro them(to go where the enemy will be, micro to attack etc)  if you wanted to chase down an enemy demigod. However, since microing is super difficult in DG due to the aforementioned bullet points, I would suggest you to drop the chasing role to other non-minion users, and focus on sustained damage/in your face pushing prowess when playing minion oak.

Sustained damage/pushing requires much less mana since you won't need to be applying/reapplying level 4 penitence. Instead of chasing enemies, you should be making them come to you. Spam those (cheap)spirit wards, they give you and your team aoe armor bonuses. Since you won't need as much mana, you get two more item slots allowing you to stack on tank/minion dps items (depending on opponents). Heart of life isn't as important for this build so it goes from being a core item to a luxury/situational item. You're definitely going to want to get your morale maxed up because when you play in a legit fashion you're looking at 16 minions. (16 minions x 4 Extra damage per minion x 6 levels of morale = very good amount of sustained dps not to mention minion attack speed + minion toughness) Since you've got 2 extra slots for tankage/minion dps, you might want to look at a little used consumable, the sigil of vitality. When not being used, it gives your minions +100 hp. When you use it, you gain 50 percent of your max hp making it much more difficult for enemies to kill you.

You should have amassed a goodly amount of gold from ganking or pushing when the time comes to decide whether or not to upgrade creeps. DG is definitely a team game. You are a very item dependent hero when it comes to late game. You are also one of the most potent late game heros whether or not you went assasin or minion line. Your team should definitely be supporting you and thus contributing more to citadel unless there is a better fed ooze UB/Oak/maybe erebus+reg).

dvorak,

i think youve hit my problem right on the head (going hybrid).  i will try more points in divine justice...the reason ive been leaving it out is i didnt think ranks beyond lvl 1 gave you the bang for your buck.  Could any other oaks comment on this? Could any other successful assassins share what they put their skill points into past shield/pen/surge?

why do you say not to get the lifesteal ring? i would think an assassin oak would benefit greatly from it.

Also I think you are correct by saying that i should get my teammates to get the beginning upgrades.  However, realistically in a random pantheon game  your partner will not do so.  Also, the general consensus is the most successful player by that time should by the cit upgrades, and im usually in that category so im kinda effed.

Ah. Pantheon. I play custom games, and usually am the host. I also take the leisure of prescreening my team by either knowing the people who play with me, or gently questioning them to see if they have an amiable personality.  For ganks, its rare for a fight to be fair( well at least it shouldn't), i.e. where both people start off at full hp and duel 1v1. Assasin should be porting all over the place and picking off the isolated engagin in 2v1's. If the other team is butt hugging (all three together), go to another lane and push/capture/ninja lock the cd flag etc.  Don't get me wrong, theres nothing wrong with narmoth for 1v1, its just not good for chasing/ganking. (no damage/no speed, slows etc). It would, however, be good for a minion build since it gives you much more tanking potential.

I would agree that going hybrid is a bad thing in most cases, at least against good players.  Jack of all trades, master of none.

If you're going assasain the first half then keep it up, maybe with some spirit backups.

If you go minion you really need to go all the way with it.  You'll be weak the first few levels but once you reach level 10-12 your minion/spirit swarm start to do some serious damage.  I've been working on a minion build for a while and getting some early armor, even scalemail will help you a lot at first.  I have modified my build over time to include 2 levels of Pen earlier which helps in pushing enemy DGs back a bit, then send your minions after them.  Vlemish is key but I find late game that's all I need.  With Divine Justice 3 and Vlemish I never run out of mana, never.  And health doesn't go down much either between DivJus and your Bishops.  Plus if you get the Platemail armor you get a 1% chance of 300 health each time you get hit.  If you need to heal up just find a creep wave and you have healing with DivJus, Platemail and Surge.  :)  Oh, if you're up against another general hope he sends his minions your way.  With DivJus you're healing *a lot* when you take those guys down as they have a lot of HPs.

My problems so far is that even with all this a well played UB will still tear you to pieces unless you have backup.  Speed items are good for a quick getaway.

not understanding why you need that much mana.

i manage to make do most games with just a Vlemish. if i manage to get a Heart of Life its like infinite mana for the rest of the game.

if i dont get both hats, i run out of mana very quickly....i tend to do alot of penitence harassing to take his life down significantly before i run in to melee to ensure a win, its very mana intensive.
