DemiFail

I wrote a post the other day mentioning how the dev's need a break;

http://forums.demigodthegame.com/354736

I hereby retract that statement.  Reasoning:  this game is hands down the worst release of any game I have played in the last 25 years.  This weekend ALONE, I have witnessed;

1)  Frequent random crashes - alt + tab anyone?

2)  Non responsive interface when in trying to join internet custom games; buttons randomly dont respond or only do so 1 minute later.

3)  A game where someone got disconnected; the disconnection window stayed there indefinitely - in desperation the rest of us  tried to quit by hitting the end game AND IT WOULD NOT LET US QUIT.  We just sat there for minutes on end till we had to terminate the application from windows.

4)  4 players including myself who played a local game with ALL green < 50 ms pings and still encountering lag.  The irony is that I played some games with 200ms average ping to other players and they went SMOOTHER then the 50ms average game.  WTF.

5)  The USELESS impulse friend system since I CANNOT message any of my friends; it only lets me know that they are "online" and "in game".  I cannot interact with them.

6)  I ran demi and decided to run impulse after; impulse decided it wanted an update, and without prompting me, proceeds to shut down demi while I am looking for a game to join. The kicker is since then (yesterday afternoon) my username / password has been declared as INVALID.  I am no longer able to log in to this buggy shit even if I want to.

I was VERY patient in the beginning (see my aforementioned "give the devs a break" thread) as this game is new but such is the number of bugs and the extent of them that I have reached the point of no return.  Will be unistalling this game and considering getting a refund because while new releases are never perfect, this is frankly unacceptable.  I don't know who is to blame for not making proper test procedures pre-release, but at this point, I have endured so much that I just don't care.

1.\ Don't alt tab? Fixing this is probably not a priority for the devs and it may be a lot harder to fix than we think. I don't get any crashes unless I try to tab out.

2.\ You click on the lobby and press join. You enter the lobby, there is a brief pause when another player joins the lobby where you can't click on things. It's not exactly a gamebreaker, I'm not sure why you care. I have never had a minute long pause.

3.\ Yep, the disconnection window is dodgy. It was only added fairly recently. I'd prefer if it wasn't there at all, playing games after someone has left is a little pointless.

4.\ I've played lan without any issues...sure it wasn't a simspeed problem?

5.\ Yeah that shits me too. I guess I got used to steam. This is more of an added feature than something central to the game though.

6.\ Everything was down yesterday, nobody could log in and everyone had the "invalid username/pass" error. Try it now, things appear to be working.

I can message my friends...

*edit*

The game has its fair share of annoying issues, but I like it enough to put up with it. I would be dissappointed if there isn't further improvement though. I don't want to be getting so many unhandled exceptions a year from now.

Consider yourself lucky Zakariel.   You started playing Demigod around May 30th.   We who been here since launch day have faced much much worst than what you have mentioned.   I have gone through everything you have mentioned and more.   I think stardock lost more than 50% of his player base because of it's launch issues.

Why am I still around??   It's a great addictive game and I hope that someday I can play 5v5 pantheon without issues.  I'm still waiting and I have alot more patient.  You have the right to post your anger and rage.  I do agree with you that this game is the worst release of any game I bought in the last 15 years.

Its because of this games potential that I had, until this weekend, been very patient even when it took me HOURS to get a decent game going.  However this weekends listed events pushed it just too far.  I just don't have the time for this anymore.  I might be back but for now; i'm just fed up.

Email support for a refund and stop bitching on the forums.

You are going about this the wrong way.

I don't care if you're having problems.   Let someone who cares know.  Kthx

This weekend something happened somewhere actually. Not really sure what but I'm guess there was some undisclosed maintence on someone's part that ended up screwing a bunch of things up this weekend. Besides this weekend, the game has be working very well with connections. Even now it seems the maintence is either over or coming to a close as everything is returning to normal.

It is pretty frustrating but I betting we're ganna hear about this weekend, this week.

ive alt + tabbed out of the game many times and hasnt crashed .... it only did one time ... which was the first time i opened the game.

i experience problems on fullscreen altabing, so i keep the game on windows mode

The problem was caused by unscheduled server maintenance that affected the demigod multiplayer servers. It was NOT Stardock or GPG's fault this occured.

ever find yourself shouting random profanity while slamming down your hand on the desk (and in one case breaking my wrist) while playing demigod? I know i have, but all in all I find talking to people helps me let loose the demons it creates inside. Remember you can talk to people, even if they may not care of listen.

Clearly YOU care, since you're going around telling everyone who disagrees with you to leave.

Why don't YOU stop clogging up the forums with your closed-minded viewpoint that everyone saying anything bad about Demigod is viciously attacking the developers/publishers.

We just want the game to be improved, does that mean that you want things to stay just as they are?

To be fair, calling the post "DemiFail" isn't exactly constructive. But yeah, people on all sides need to come down a bit. In the end we all need to remember that it's just a game. A very fun, addictive one, but a game nonetheless.

I tried to be patient and give constructive feedback as I empathized with the dev's, being a former games programmer myself.  However, after playing this weekend, it became abundantly clear that this game is, for the most part, unplayable.  I spend substantially more time trying to get a game going and hoping that it does not crap out on me, then actually playing.  I just don't have the time for this.

I do not experience them. But I would suggest to simply try the windowed mode.

When using windowed mode, you can use the close button of the window to exit the game in a normal manner, without having to terminate the process.

Ping has nothing to do with that. It doesn't matter if a player has 0 or 350 ms. All that matters is a steady stream to and from every player. If something is interefering with that (like a firewall or antivirus scanning the UDP packets etc.), then there will be stutter.

Well keep in mind this game is going to be frequently updated with new features and demigods and such. As Frogboy mentioned in the GPG forums its a "long-term" project and they are being funded for a year's worth of updates, so this game will really evolve over time.

It is up there not sure if it's the buggiest but top 5 for sure.  You know its bad when there patches break the game and they have to release patches for patches.

No offense directed at you Spooky, but that's complete horse shit when the only way to play a game safely is in windowed mode.

Agreed.  One should not have to play the game in window mode to avoid errors or game crashes.  For me the only crashes I get when I alt-tab is anytime I am in a custom game channel waiting to play.  This weekend for the 1st time I had the game lockup at the game over screen where it is supposed to show the scores and favor points.  I could press alt f4 and it would ask if I wanted to exit the game and when I click yes it closes the prompt like I did nothing.  I had to ctrl-alt-delete demigod to get out :| .

I assure you, windowed mode suffers from plenty of random crashes as well.  Given how many Fatal Exceptions, lock-ups and outright crash to desktops I'd be tempted to say it's probably worse but I haven't played in fullscreen mode all that much.

You should see the stuff that can happen in Team Fortress 2 when you Alt-Tab the game ;). Not only is it horribly, horribly slow, but the game itself will be screwed up (invisible players, floating weapons, seeing scouts with rocket launchers etc.)

I know it.  If you alt-tab in TF2 you are not coming back.  However, that doesn't mean that TF2 is perfect.

If you're designing a game for Windows it better as hell be able to alt tab cleanly, if only for the fact that your game should not CRASH should one of your users accidentally hit the Windows key.

And the alt-tabs are not even a majority of Demigod's crashing.  The unexpected exceptions come and go with inconsistent frequency and always fatal results.
