Ranks

My rank is ridiculously high, around 15,000, which is really bad. However, I win more than 66% of the time. That's 2 out of every 3 games. I just played 1v1 against a rank 12 person and won. He was very good, but I had the better strategy. So, how does this ranking thing work anyways? How did he get rank 12? Why am I stuck with such a low rank?

I had the same problem, stuck in the bottom 10% of the rankings for the entire tournament, but after an 11 match win streak it finally bumped me up to rank 200ish in tournament ladder last night, and like top 100 in overall ladder.

Yeah, ranking is a complete mystery. I'm rank 13,000 and something in custom even though I've won 21 games and lost 11.

I stand by my assertion of how nerfing of the teleport scrolls is absolutely needed, btw. :P

Obviously if you win 66% of your games you are not playing against the competition you should be to increase your rank so go play better people.

The pantheon matches you with whoever is available( and not based on rank), so you cant really choose to play with better people.

It seems to me that rank on the ladders is determined almost exclusively by your experience rating.  The working theory is that experience is gained/lost based on who you play and whether you win or lose.  If you are winning against lower experienced players then you will gain very little experience yourself.  Conversely, if you lose a game with lower experience rated players you end up taking a bigger hit to your experience rating.  AIs (and possibly those substitued for a dropped player after a match begins) do not yield very much experience either, so if a lot of your ranked games involved AIs that may be one of the reasons your ranking is lower.

As someone else pointed out, Pantheon matches are out of your control.  It should be matching you with others around your same rating, so you should be slowly gaining experience if you're completing full matches and winning.

Pantheon and skirmish games does do some experience rating comparison before setting up matches but if there aren't enough players in queue it will eventually just put them into a game. A few weeks back it would spend more time waiting for balanced games but that resulted in some very high ranked players waiting forever between games.

My pantheon games tend to be me + a new player or low ranked player versus one high ranked player and one average ranked player.

Ah.  Well that may well be.  I haven't attempted a Pantheon game in a few weeks and several patches.

There are also still some quirks with not all Pantheon games being properly reported (see T-Man's dev journal), so not all of your wins may actually be getting accepted by the server, in which case you wouldn't get the experience gains from them.

All stats are a bit wonky at the moment, and they're going to restart them all when things are ironed out anyways.
