Semi-Solution to Noobs: Training Grounds

I think a way for new players to become more familiar with the game is with the addition of an unranked match-type exclusive to those who have only recently/haven't begun playing the game online. This way, new players can be matched up against other new players without having to worry about ruining other people's games or being matched up with a far more experienced opponent.

Naturally, there are some people who would join this match-type just to stroke their ego by roflstomping noobs. The best way to stop this is to make it so that the option to join "Training Grounds" is removed once you have played 10 or so games online. By then you should be more than ready to play for real.

Thoughts?

I think it would be much better to implement an option where you can choose who is able to invite your game similar to Project Torque. For example it could be a great idea to choose what rank you want to challenge: from rank... to rank... or so.

i like the idea... however once the proper rank/karma system is added in 1.1 hosts woulde be able to see how many games a player has played allowing them to simply boot experianced players.  this way "Training Ground" is still open for experianced players who want to take "noobs" under their wings to pep talk them through the basics.

also since you failed to mention what the exact specifics of "Training Ground"   i thought up a few:

  • Double exp and gold income
    •  (essencialy -EM from DotA, and yes i know i've personaly spoke out against it in other posts, but i think it makes sense of a tutorial like mode)
  • Towers and Unit do reduced damage but increased HP
    • (for longer grunt waves)
  • No Deaths
    • (when a Demigod dies they simply get their HP reduced to 1hp and can not attack for 10 secs, during this time they get no regen or ability uses so they have to go back ot the crystal)
    • (Basicly this makes those "noobs" who always die feel better and allows them to learn from how they died)
    • (the victor still gets gold thou)
  • Citadel Upgrades reduced or restricted
    • (makes Citadel upgrading more basic for learners.. maybe taking out all the upgrades after Warscore 8?)
    • (no giants or Finger of God... specificly)

This way its more basic and mistake forgiving... but also lets you know what the game is about and how to do all the basics.

Another option would be to have a specific map with more basic pathing and maybe stuff written on the ground like "Item Shop  -->"  or  "Flag --->"

Strange, I must have missed the part about a rank/karma system being implemented in 1.1. Still, I think an entire unranked match-type would be more appealing to a new player, especially since there don't seem to be any people actually doing that at the moment.

Yeah, this was just a more general idea. The main point is to get people to become more accustomed to playing against other people, since the AI is kind of crappy and single player is only useful for testing builds and getting a general feel for things.

I don't really think massively dumbing the game down is a good way to teach newbies how to play the real thing.

Everyone I know I've just tossed into a game with the AI.

It's not that difficult to learn and if you baby people they just get used to EZ mode and learn the game wrong.

Just jump into a game and play, it's how everyone else I know has learned and they do fine.

I was thinking along the same lines. Playing against people who are new to the game as well should be enough.

It's not "EZ mode" or babying people, it's just new players going against other new players to learn what playing against an actual person is like. Even on hard mode the AI isn't very good, and nightmare AI get a rather insane amount of buffs.

oh... so when u say "match type" what u actually mean is having it the exact same game... with the exact same stats and objectives... but with "noobs only" officalized when joining?

as for this... Frogboy meantioned it (Here) when brainstorming in Journals...  as well as mentioned/suggested by other players here in the Idea section (Example)... and i think i saw something in General as well a while back.  nothing "offical" but 1.1 is what i would assume it would be in.

confusing from my post might have been that "... once the proper rank/karma system is added in 1.1..." should have read "... once a proper rank/karma system is added in 1.1..."  my fault.

While I think there should be an easier way for new players to learn multiplayer than just jumping in any game, this seems like it's dumbing it down far far too much.

Basically. It would be like Skirmish, Custom, and Pantheon, only unranked and with new players only being allowed to join. The option to play Training Grounds would disappear from the multiplayer screen after you have played 10 or so games online.

No problem, I get the idea that some sort of rank/karma system will be added eventually.

Sorry, that was my fault for being unclear. I couldn't think of a word to describe what I meant other than match type.

Thats all shit. i mean, just paly ten times vs AI, then try to strike "HARD" AI. If you can do this, thats training enough. Stardock, leave it at this point. I think its just fucked up to install DG, and play online from the first minute. First learn offline how to paly, or paly dota. OPtherwise dopn´t whine about being flamed.
