Reward the completion of Achievements

Hello all, I'd like to start with introducing myself as I am new to the game and this is my first post with an idea of my own. Now a little background, I enjoy this game without question and really enjoy my time spent on it. I do however have one little problem with a feature that the game provides. Demigod gives you achievements to strive for, "Get 100 Demigod Kills" "Achieve Level 20" and even "Win X amount of Games". Now I believe that Achievements are a great idea, they add longevity to a game and make people play that one more game to recieve that Achievement. Well in other games that may be, but in Demigod I do not feel that way. I complete a task like "Kill 15 Demigods in one Game" and have what to show for it? A nice little piece of information in a dark secluded place on my game that only I can see.

Now I did notice that there is an Achievements Tab on Demigodthegame.com that is "Coming Soon" but is that really enough? Sure you can say, look at what I did. But other than that what do you recieve, not much that's for sure. I would just like to see a little reward for my work. Now before you all say, "Well you're one of those guys that plays non-stop and wants to recieve items for something that other people have no chance of achieving!"...that's wrong. I work an 8-hour day and then have a pregnant wife to go home to, and that means I get little time to play when games are on average 30-45 minutes long. That is beside the point and off topic so I will continue on with my first topic.

Now when I happen to complete the "Win X amount of Games" I would like to see some kind of item, whether a Favor Item or an Item that is located in the normal shop become available. I would like it to be something that is definately not overpowered but certainly unique. An item that is on par with the others of it's price range just with different stats, balanced stats. That way I can be like...hmm do I want "Scaled Helm" or "Winged Helmet (Generic dumb made-up name I know)" and it gives me a little bit of pride to know why I have that item there.

I only bring this up because Achievements are meant to prolong your gaming experience and I feel as if they have no meaning in Demigod as it currently stands. If they were to add unlockable items for each of the Achievements and possibly Unique items for the really hard to achieve and DG specific Achievements it would make people want to play each Demigod to it's fullest. It would give people who are interested in playing a different Demigod an incentive to try it out. That's my two cents. Questions?

It would be nice if achievements had some sort of light award system to them. Even just bonus favor points depending on the achievement would be cool too.

I agree, incentives are nice. While im sure ppl will say "why do you need an incentive to play" i agree that gaining a unique item makes it more fun and fulfulling. I disagree on the fact that the said items should not be overpowered, i believe they should have some sort of epicness or give you some sort of edge for having it. For example, if you are "Borto the Turdburglar"... then you should be able to get the "Turdburglars Glove" that gives plus X AP and plus X mana/health ps and maybe even and AOE proc. Its little things like that, that make good games great imo.

regabond,

I went back and looked at my Achievements list and there are numbers listed beside the Achievement I am thinking those are additional Favor Points obtained from completing that achievement. I guess that makes that part obsolete. But I still stand by my Items idea!

destruksean,

The only problem I have with giving out items that have, lets not say overpowered but rather "have an advantage", an advantage over others because someone was able to achieve 250 wins is only rewarding to those who play non-stop and only harms those who just recieved the game.

Lets assume an average game is 30 minutes, and you are so good that you win every game, that is 7,500 minutes of gameplay which is 5.2 straight days of gameplay, the average player will never reach that. I believe an item that would be recieved from this could be powerful, at a rank equal to Godplate or possibly a little better, but it would still cost a hefty price and in the end be balanced. I am of the belief that if you play a game for an extended amount of time you should be rewarded, but not with something that changes the balance of the game.

If a Godlike item was granted for this Achievement then it would be abused and in the end casual players would be put off by those who are hardcore. Now in a perfect world this would not be an issue and those that put in the most effort would be allowed to recieve the greatest rewards, however, in this day and age companies need to get paid and by only rewarding a select few with Items of unbelievable power it would seriously turn off casual gamers. I only suggest that the items that are obtained are mere subtle changes and may help you out but will never be game breaking. I hope I am not confusing you guys.

*cough* just gonna fix a little mistake...30x250 = 7500 minutes = 125 hours = 5,2 days... u were off quite a bit... but yeah i mostly agree with the achievement item idea... but it could be godlike too... they'd just have to create a mode that those items are disabled in

Doh! Math never was a good subject of mine...even then looking at it I was like...for real? Oh well! I'll fix my previous post.

Not to compare apples to oranges here, but lets take a game like WOW.  If you have been playing for a while and have "built up" your character, you will be "overpowered" to those who first started playing. That is, imo, an accepted situation due to the fact the "noob" or new players understand they will just have to build up characters to compete with higher level players. And if what i understand is correct, they match players and games based on skill level, so this shouldnt really be too much of a problem. Should it?

No, i completely disagree. While this has an RPG style, it is most definately a strategy game. Even if the items are balanced, it is an unfair advantage against other players who play more casually. Soon it turns from "I was outmatched" to "He had better stuff" which is not a fun belief for either side. I dislike the idea of unlocking favor items as well, but I don't mind it as much because it does not take long to get the item you want. I wouldn't mind unlockable skins and graphical unlocks, but not items. (Maybe a golden weapon or some effect). I'd rather people to play and be rewarded, not have them playing for the rewards.

Well at any rate, its always more fun to have somthing to work towards than not. People will always complain about somthing and I agree that its never a good idea to give those ppl more ammunition or reason to QQ.  I saw another post on here about different skins or outfits for demigods, now that would be a good idea for a reward system. Rather than simply give ppl the new outfits, it could be given out in the reward system, that way you get somthing to work towards, noone will be "outmatched" due to it, and just fun all around.

Make the rewards aesthetic, or, like favor items, easy to work towards.

Favor items work out well; you can get them quickly, they are (mostly) all useful to some degree (though most all items relating to combat are eclipsed by blade of the serpant or BotF, and otherwise it is swift anklet or teleport scroll), and you can still earn more and be more diverse. It's kind of like in Guild Wars: By level 20, you could have a good build or two under your belt, but by playing more you could have more skills (and eventually unlock all skills for all classes if you felt like grinding that much for something that useless.)

Hmmm, are the favor points to get for achievements not enough?  As you know, that already translates to items which are nice enough to change the dynamics a tiny bit without breaking the game or giving an ulduly sized advantage.

System seems fine to me!

Well considering how i have seen the posts regarding "what can be done to make dg better" or a recent post by frogboy that is basicly asking what can be done to make sure dg doesnt peak then die off. I think it is always a good idea to keep thinking of ways to improve somthing. Yes, the favor point system works and is good as it is. This is not about favor points, this is about adding another dimension to keep dg attractive and to attract new players. If you look at one of the most succesful online games out there youll see that they constantly add things and keep the game fresh. So if you look at it from that perspective, while the favor system is fine and not lacking, no the favor point system is not enough to keep these needs filled.

Even if it wasnt a new item, a different model or outfit for people with achievements would be nice.  Dawn of War 2 had a system like this where you unlocked capes and other crap for your troops.  It didnt change gameplay at all, but it did allow me to flaunt my level a little.  They could throw in a couple goofy items too, like a gold crossbow for Reg (Gold lancer, like GOW2), but make these items a 1 time use till you get the achievement again (win 10 games, get gold weapon, etc).

To keep it out of multiplayer, you could have a host option to turn off "reward" items.  They already have that for favor items.
