Can't create Direct3d

Have had Demigod since release and I love the game!  Just recently when I stared trying to launch the game I get the error message (See post subject) and the game will no longer launch.

I have reinstalled and even (just released) updated my drivers.  Below is the results from my dxdiag.exe

[clipped dxdiag]

When you posted your dxdiag it looks like you missed the top sections with the info about your video card, which is the only likely culprit here (I removed the extra stuff so the post isn't so long). If you grab that top part of the dxdiag (stop when it gets to sound card stuff) and post it here it should be helpful.

Did you happen to change the video card or monitor recently, or move the game save directory between machines? I know when I move my Game.prefs file between my laptop and desktop I have to change the default resolution and refresh as my laptop has a higher resolution and the two displays have incompatible refresh rates.

Reply #5 Top

I run a dual monitor set up.  I switched them recently - should I switch them back?  Is there a way I can change this in options of the game ?

Reply #6 Top

It could be a DirectX problem. Try redownloading that.

If you swapped them around and they are different resolutions, then it's probably just getting stuck trying to start up on the one at the other's resolution. If you swap them back so it'll start up, you can set it to Windowed or a lower resolution until you switch the primary/secondary around again, then you can set it to the appropriate resolution.

You could search for a section in the Game.prefs file that looks similar to this:

           options = {
                master_volume = 100,
                tooltip_delay = 0,
                tooltips = true,
                vsync = 0,
                edge_tracking = 1,
                antialiasing = 64,
                texture_level = 1,
                reverbenabled = 0,
                primary_adapter = '1920,1200,62',
                music_volume = 100,
                wheel_sensitivity = 60.812503814697,
                vo_volume = 100,
                level_of_detail = 1,
                shadow_quality = 1,
                fidelity_presets = 4,
                audio_lod = 2,
                fidelity = 1,
                fx_volume = 100
            },

You'll want to change the primary_adapter entry to something you know the monitor supports. I would say to just search the file for "primary_adapter" (and it will probably still be the best way to find this area), but it appears more than once in the file (the other area seems to list valid windowed modes in mine).

You could also try just deleting the Game.Prefs file and then try loading the game.  That should set the game back to the default video settings.

Game.prefs file is found in Document\My Games\Gas Powered Games\Demigod

Correct me if I am wrong, but that would destroy any single player favor and acheivements they might want to save, right?

OK - switched the big lcd back in place and it works just fine.  Kind of odd that the game doesn't pick up a chance in resolution types...but I'm back to playing my favorite game again!
