Countering Tower Rooks

Using Sedna and UB.

Ok, here is a scenario for you guys. Me and my friend, we always play games together, and we are a good couple rungs above most people on the experience ladder for Demigod. I am always an Ooze beast, and he flips between a couple different Sedna builds.

Facing anything except Erebus and Tower Rook, we handle our selves really well. It is when we come up against these two that we run into trouble.

Ooze beast cant do anything to tower rook on the front end. Its not until later in teh game that it become even remotely possible to run into the tower network and hurt rook. Sedna just does not have the dps to truly bust down towers fast enough. (I know sedna has heals and everything but she cant heal through all the damage the towers and rook do.

So we come to 2 different solutions:

1) Find a way for Ooze Beast to be more effective against tower rook.

2) Couple sedna against tower rook and let her hold him back with support of our own towers.

(This is all taken to be on the map Cataract, as it is the most balanced and most played map.)

Now 1/2 of you are going to respond: "Use torchbearer or a different demigod." Those replies dont help. I am looking for a good strategy/possible solution to taking care of rook.

If anyone has any insights. Especially against the dreaded double tower rook on Cataract.

A few rules for responses:

1) Do NOT say to ignore Rook. That will not work, as a half competent tower rook will attack towers like they are fine italian marble.

2) Do NOT flame against anyone, or bring up records by way of telling someone who is better.

3) Do not suggest using different DGs. This thread i am looking for solutions to tower rooks on cataract using Sedna and UB.

Thank you in advance to everyone who posts!

Your UB needs to use spit. Have sedna use minions. They can overrun a tower farm.

Early game you're probably going to have to ignore the tower Rook unless you can 2v1 him or catch him out of his tower farm. By mid-game Sedna can send in her minions to draw the tower's fire, and an ooze UB can stack health and armor to resist the tower shots.

I'd recommend one of two strategies:

  1. Ignore the Rook.
  2. Use a different DG, maybe Torchbearer.

Good luck out there!

As Sedna, rush the siege minions. Rook can't sit there, because they'll take down his farm. Also, grab a HoL, run in, do some damage and run out. I would also suggest Orb of Defiance here, because the tower AI isn't smart and Rook can't micro them, so if one of you runs in and then pops orb, the other one is quite free to act.

The trick is that the towers may be intimidating, but that's all a tower rook has. He can't also pick a strong Slam and Stun until 13-14. Use HoL and mana reg to wear him down, pick siege minions and priests, stack armor. Stacking armor and health is a very good counter to tower rookies.

priest minions....

Sedna healing Ooze UB after level 7 = a net damage of almost zero. Combine with siege minion idols to harrass the towers, and you can easily keep rook at bay. Erebus... you just have to make him run, trying to get kills with a team with only one stun just isn't going to happen.

Oak runs in with shield, run in after him. This has worked very well with a Sedna/Oak combo. I wouldn't run in 1v1 vs a Tower rook unless I have some serious DPS (preferably ranged).

Minions to distract the towers work very well. You can use the portal grunts for this purpose if you can't afford your own minions.   Hit and run the rook with Pounce and Spit.

Items-wise, you might consider trying mana drains. The gloves probably wont work because you have to sit there and slap the rook 10-20 times, but the warlord's doohickey will do decent mana drain and AOE.

In terms of demigod choice you could always go Regulus. Outranging the towers is a sure way to bring them down.  Oak is another good choice, Spirit-spam distracts the towers like no other.

As Sedna, I pouce and retreat continuously.  I've kept most tower rooks at bay solo many times.  I can't "stop" him, but I slow him down SO much, he usually has to reatreat sooner or later (I can keep healing my tower damage after every pounce, but even with Pots, he still has to retreat sooner or later).

If your lucky enough to have TB (or UB with spit), his need to retreat is assured.  Getting an ally to help you, even for a minute or two, could send him running.  You WILL take damage; but being careful, you won't die.  Trying to kill him in just one encounter is not the way to go, you'll be killed for sure.

Keep in mind, just one competent player, keeping the rook from rolling a lane is all you need. Your 2 or 3 teammates, dominating the rest of the map more than makes up for the rook's slogging down an lane.  Make it so when the rest of Rook's team needs help, he is useless, because he can never leave his ittle-bitty zone of safety. . .

    Pretty easy I think.

     As UB:

Take spit lvl 1.   Early game you will be able to harass him out of the lane with spit.   Even if you are an ooze build train spit for lvl 1.

   As Sedna:

A heal sedna should be able to push rook out of the lane until rook gets tower 2.     Get minions.  Maybe even get priests.

working together send your minion monks to go stand by UB so he gets heals at intervals.

later game get armor.   Then both together charge the rook and kill him.  He shouldnt be able to run away from the two of you and if he tries to recall both of you have an interupt.   He should be easy prey later game as all you have to do is run in with a monster spawn and take him out.

Think of Tower Rook as an assassin that moves the front of your base forward with him. An unclean beast shouldn't be going for a kill without Sedna being there as that is akin to running around inside the enemy base while getting pounded by an Assassin. Assassins exist both in real life and in games to admonish foolish behaviour. Anyone venturing too far behind enemy lines deserves to be assassinated.

Generals on the other hand have the ability to chip away at fortifications without leaving themselves vulnerable.

Put the two together and you have your General clearing the towers(consequently soaking up Rooks Mana) and Unclean Beast going in to punish him for overextending.

Also your partner really has to move fully to the dark-side or you have to go towards the light. There can be no middle ground.

You need to go full minion build with Sedna, then once Sedna is in and keeping the towers busy, your Ooze UB comes in to finish the job.

Tower Rook is a poor against full minion builds. A full minion build means that you stop putting skills into Heal and Pounce, you get minion related skills and put your cash into minion objects.

You will have 12 minions at around 2K HP each, with an immense combined DPS, you will be ripping down towers before the rook knows what hit him.

OBviously you might have some trouble, if he has an Ice TB backing him up :p

There are a couple of ways you can do this.  Go early health adn armor (the cheaper the sources the better) and harrass him before lvl 7 when he can get 6 towers up.  When he only has 2-4 towers and doesn't have the mana items to support building infinite towers it's very easy to harrass him.  Keep in mind with a Sedna ally this is even easier.  Sedna can have a minion army adding 6-9 creeps, along with herself.  Throw in UB, and you can see how 10 charachters vs 4 towers early game means you can just march in and kill the rook.

The rook cannot focus fire the towers so the more minions the more the dmg is spread out amongst the team, and the less your demigods take.  Rook is so slow that you as an ooze beast should have no trouble beating him down.  The key is to keep beating him down pre lvl 7.  After lvl 7 if you did a good job of out lvl'ing him, sending him back to base denying him gold, and killing him, you should have a fairly large advantage at this point, so much so that I've had many a game where a ooze beast full of items can just march in and kill me.

Also it takes time to set up 8 towers and move them forward.  Look for when he is setting them up and attack him before he gets them all up.  It's not like he has a spell where he can just pop 8 towers up, mana free and instantly, so use the initial set up time to hunt him down.

If you don't manage to have a good early game against him and for some reason you are losing badly, there is always option number 2, and this is by far the best option for dealing with a tower rook in general.  Ignore his towers and him completely and cap there portals.  I can't streess how many times I've lost a game because of high lvl players ignoring me.  All they do is wait until I'm pushing there base on a map like Cataract and then run around me and head straight for my portals.  What is a tower rook to do.  If I tp to help my ally, I'm coming in with no towers.  This means that an ooze beast and sedna should rip me and my ally apart, because i'm more or less garbage without my tower farm.  What this means is that i have to conceed the portal which you then proceed to cap.  Now I have a decision to make teleport to my other portal and set up some towers to defend it, giving up my base push, or continue on my base push and let you get the second portal.

Either way I'm screwed.  I can go after one of your portals but with rooks slow speed, and time required to set up towers at best I can get 1 portal for every 2 you get.  If you keep this up you should have 90% of the flags on the map and 3 of the 4 portals at all times.  Needless to say with some citadel upgrades and your war rank 10 vs my teams 6 at best, will mean you win the game no problem (upgrade your units, giants from 3 portals with catapults means dead citadel/fortress/etc).  This is the main reason I stopped playing rook (although I recently just started picking it up again to try out some new techniques).

The reality is that a tower rook can rape noobs, but anyone competent will just ignore him giving up some defensive structures mid for total map control, higher war rank, more portals.  If you do this enough tower rook will have to come out of his tower castle to set up his towers more defensively and closer to the base which means he is no longer pushing so either way you win.  The one exception to this is two tower rooks, as 16 towers pushing the middle lane on a map like cataract with them having double boulder roll for 5 sec's of stun means your pretty much dead if you didn't harass them enough early.  That is the only exception I can think of though.

My advice would be to pressure him early, if possible.  Some things to help you do this:

-Get armor.  You can buy Scalemail and a Nimoth Chest easily.

-Attack with your creep waves.  They help absorb both tower damage and any damage from passives the rook might have taken.  Minions from Sedna can help, too.

-Try and figure out what items the rook has.  If he's taken mana items over HP items, try and burst him down.  If he's stacked HP, try and wear down his towers and thus his mana.

-Pounce!  Early game, especially, I fear Sednas as a tower rook.  I rely heavily on teleports and if a Sedna attacks me with one or two other demigods, I have to get in a teleport in between pounces or I'm in serious trouble.  If you've got a rook cornered, be sure Sedna saves her pounce for when the rook tries to teleport out.

Creep wave and or minions and tower rooks are basicly just rooks that didn't allocate skill points : p

While I agree in principle with this creep waves won't work.  Any rook worth a grain of salt mid game uses one boulder roll to kill all creeps.  If you are relying on them to soak up dmg you will quickly find yourself stuned and all creeps dead in the middle of 8 towers.  Minnions don't suffer from this because boulder roll can't kill them and there high health.

One thing to keep in mind in general, regarding Rook and Ooze...

I've noticed if you simply click to attack the Rook, your Ooze will not hit the Rook while you attack him at the default attack range. You actually have to manually move INTO the Rook a little bit, or else your Ooze is wasted due to his large size. Might help you take out Rooks easier with an Ooze build.
