Regulus.

Right I'll just say this first; I hate Regulus.

I don't think he's OP, I just hate him.

He's the only character in the entire game who I've ever found myself "raging" over, especially when I've just gotten a nice juicy kill on one or two of his teammates, and am back in the fog heading back to base when BAM he kills me from his base, next to his citadel because he clicked on me before I was into the fog of war again.

And that has happened to me so very very many times in the few online games I've played in(once when I was laughing with a teammate because I had barely escaped a battle as Rook with only 80hp, oh that displeased me so very very much)and I won't lie, it infuriates me almost every time it happens.

I've tried fighting them when he's been on a lane I'm in, however he can merely hide behind a tower and beat the hell out of me easily, forcing me out of the lane from the safety of his towers, you could say the same about QoT and TB, but to my knowledge they don't get abilities that let them well outrange towers and track an enemy's exact location.

I usually play as The Rook and I'm also having a look at Torch Bearer, I've tried UB once or twice too, and my question is simple -

How do I deal with him? I generally know how to deal with the other Demigods when I come up against them, but I just have no idea what to do when going up against a character who can stay miles out of my range(even worse if they stack move speed items for kiting around the area). So I suppose what I'm asking for is if anyone has any general tips if I end up going against a Regulus, ANYTHING, really, if it's helpful is appreciated.

Regulus has to take a pretty big hit to his other skill sets to get snipe at a level where it 'counts'. Early on if your inexperienced enough to allow your HP to drop below 500 with a reg on the map, well you get what you deserve.

On a side note I personally feel regulus snipe should have a much larger range, 2 to 3 times more than it currently has. I also think mines should do double damage, and have a smaller cap on how many can be out (like 4 or 3). Currently I hate how mines work. It's funny that so many people complain that there OP, yet at level 10 if you manage to walk your lame self over all 6 of his mines its still not gonna kill you.

omg i hate this too, i guess the best thing is to make sure u hav enough health and run back to your base, maybe like the smalled healing pot u can get. just be aware that u can be sniped at any time, so run away from a battle sooner than u would etc.

Sorry for double posting Back to Back but I wanted to leave information on how to counter regulus.

Very 1st rule, is that teleport scroll is regulus biggest weakness. It's 250 gold that will not be wasted. You can teleport and help gank, and you can always escape him. Regulus has no stuns, so if you ever become snared by a reg, just teleport home. He has NO way of stoping you other than killing you and snaring you.

Regulus has 3 favor items that allow him to be viable. Heavens wrath, poisoned dagger, and swift anklets. Each DG you play as will have a different way of countering these items and different regulus builds, I will try to give you a comprehensive answer to your problem.

If you are playing a general, Cloak of Night (the favor item that costs 2000 and gives a warp effect) is an all around counter to regulus and shennanigans. As a general with a regulus on the field opposing you, monks are ALWAYS the first item you purchase. 2 monks in a lane vs regulus means he can't really touch you.

How to play? force regulus off of the flag you are protecting. Trying to kill a good regulus is like killing a cockaroach, you have to be over him with a large shoe to get the job done, and if you aren't it's just a waste of time trying to kill him. However if regulus is behind a tower and your on the flag, your winning, even if his HP are near full. You will have monks to heal you from his ranged harassment, and Cloak of Night to get out of dodge if he manages to knock your HP below your safety zone.

If you are playing as rook, there is not much you can do against regulus. He is your natural counter in all ways. If you manage to get into a game as rook vs a regulus, I suggest getting Blood of the Fallen and going hammer slam / boulder roll combo very early on. Stack health and keep a teleport scroll on you always. At level 10 your ability to assist in team fights will win the game, where regulus will still be meh.

I'll skip regulus on regulus advice. Obviously shennannigans happen here. Just keep a TP scroll if you think your opponent is better than you.

Torch bearer and Unclean beast both have negative advantages against regulus. The thing is both players pre level 10 are able to camp a flag better than regulus could ever hope for. Spit from beast will keep regulus away from melee range, you just have to fight him off enough ground that your capturing the flag and he isn't. TB can take FB (a natural counter to regulus) and switch to ice form and auto attack him away. You naturally have a higher auto attack damage when switching from fire to ice. As always, keep a teleport scroll on you. Also at level 5 unclean beast will just eat regulus, so man up and force him out of your lane.

This game is much more about controlling flags than killing DG (unfortunantly) although a good team will turn a 1 kill advantage into a win before you can come back to life. Regulus is honestly the least effective character in the game for conquest.

get more health. works like a charm. combat health potions work wonders as well. sniping is predictable. take the necessary precautions when there's a regulus on the map.

if you get sniped to death because you weren't minding your health closely enough its your fault.  these are the approximate health thresholds you need to stay above to avoid sniping death.

lvl 1-3: 450

lvl 4-6: 650

lvl 7-9: 850

lvl 10+ : 1100

the far greater threat is when a Regulus snipes you DURING a close fight against one of his team-mates. the sudden health drop can turn the tide and let the other guy kill you before you can retreat. but nobody ever said that you should expect to win a 2v1 fight, Regulus specializes in providing 2v1 support from extreme range. your answer is just to move with your own partner so Reg can't threaten both of you. and again, use health potions, they almost completely negate his sniping tactics for a relatively low gold cost.

One day you will get over Snipe and realize that Mark is the reason Regulus is irritating.

While I see no problem with Regulus as is because I think he's only OP'd as much as most other Demigods, I do have to agree with the OP that the most annoying thing in the game is to be 2 secs from the heath crystal after just barely surviving a gank attempt, and getting sniped. Of any skill, it feels the cheapest.

Regulus is a dick.

You cannot deny this fact, his character is in the game to annoy, not to win.

regulus is just a boring hero to play. just like UB.

It is rather infuriating at first, to be killed by snipe. After a while the feeling turns into something more like embarassment ("dammit, how the heck did I fall for that trick, again"). Also you can probably imagine that the Regulus player on the other end probably experiences an equal and opposite amount of glee every time he pulls this off, so its not like its unhealthy for game enjoyment on the whole.

As for countering it, Transitive had excellent advice. Be wary of entering situations where snipe will get you killed. Stack health to provide an ample safety zone, and carry potions to undo snipe at critical moments.

I too hate Regulus, mostly because of his ability to Auto-attack at range while moving and his Auto-attack being what gets most of his DPS late-game, he's a great Demigod to pursue you. Having said that, when an inexperienced player is in control of him, he becomes so easy to farm it's crazy.

And the amount of times I've been involved in a heated battle, thought I was going to win only to be sniped at the crucial moment... man, makes my blood boil!

I was in a game once with my team against 2 regulus and an oak.. well... It was a pain i`ll tell you... It was an all random match, and our team was decently ballanced.. i believe with an oak, a sedna and a TB.

The other team all agreed on taking that item that can shoot that lightning anywhere on the map... And theres just nothing like having 3 of those land on your head followed by 2 snipes at long range. They can drop you at half health. Pretty sure they were on a voice com, seeing as how well coordinated the strikes happened.. But boy is it irritating :p

As a general, Cloak of Night warp into his face and kick the fuck out of him.

As UB, Wand of Speed and just sprint into his face and kick the fuck out of him.

As Tb..well you can just lob a fireball at him and he's running away, and use CoF's as control, i.e cap a flag, move forards a bit, drop a CoF and reg will sit about doing nothing.

As rook. I dunno...pray you have some backup? playing as Rook makes me feel like killing myself.

Like others said, the first thing to do when playing against Regulus is this: Don't play Rook.  Rook is my primary, too, and it's very rare that I'm able to threaten a good Regulus player.  Just switch spots with your non-rook teammates and let someone else who is faster and better-equipped deal with him.

UB with diseased claws + poison dagger + ooze + wand of speed = dead Reg

Sedna + cloak of night + pounce + wand of speed = dead Reg

Haven't really tried any other anti-reg combos, so I can't really offer much more info than that :)

zerging him with minions + horn of battle works also. And it's pretty funny.

Regulus's prime weakness is that each of his skills take several points before they can become a severe threat; coupled with him having several "must-have" passives, this usually means Regs don't have a "build" of several abilities--they usually have to choose one ability to put many points in, and neglect the others. As a result, they are something of a one-trick pony: where any other Demigod can fall back on their other skills if one is ineffective, Reg is pretty much %&$@ out of luck if you can get around his one strong skill.

As general advice, all of Reg's abilities work best when he is alone or unbothered; therefore, don't give him a moment's rest. Force him to be dealing with SOMEbody, every minute of the game, and you will exhaust him and overwhelm him. Don't worry too much about him pestering you from just out of range--remember, you aren't taking the lane to kill Demigods, you're taking the lane so you can kill creeps for xp and gold, and let your creeps reach the towers. Always threaten Reg until he retreats to a tower, then back up and kill creeps.

By constantly threatening Reg but focusing on the creeps, you will inevitably win; even if he does get a lot of damage on you, as long as he doesn't kill you, you will have gained a lot of strength on him--he's wasted too much time attacking you, while you've been building up xp and gold. A Reg denied creeps will have to rely entirely on Demigod kills for strength, so just make sure you never, ever die to him--teleport, heal, or even go get killed by a tower, just so he can't get the full benefits of killing you.

As for other ways of stopping him, flag locks stop him from getting xp by capturing, denying him even further--this can be devastating early game, when he desperately needs skill points to get even one viable skill. Always control the xp flag, just so he has to work even harder to overcome your lead. Priests will keep you healed while you fight, making it that much harder for him to pester you into fleeing; healing in general shuts him down quite quickly, since he's essentially all spike damage--he's relying on the first two hits deciding the fight. Stacking speed is particularly important against Reg--you had better believe that he's going to be, so you have to be sure he can't flee guaranteed.

The best way to shut down Reg early is kill the tower closest to the lane, so he can't attack you while you're killing creeps--this will force him to retreat much further, or move to a different lane. If you've taken down the towers on all the creep lanes, you've pretty much shut him down for good.

Remember, keep HIM responding to YOU--this will keep you ahead in xp and gold, and deny him his critical advantage of initiative; I always say Regulus is like Batman--even though he isn't as strong as anybody else, he has the right tools to win any fight, if he has time to prepare. Therefore, don't give him time to prepare.

As for countering his skills:

If his strong skill is Snipe, simply carry a minor combat potion around; it will take a tremendous amount of effort and shenanigans for a Snipe to kill you through 750 health. As soon as you suspect he is preparing a snipe (i.e., you are fleeing and a Snipe would be lethal,) pop the potion and you will almost certainly survive--also leaving the Reg puzzled as to why a sack of cash and xp didn't just appear in his lap. If this Reg also uses Heaven's Wrath, it might be a bit tougher--consider buying one of the powerful combat potions from the artifact shop, or just flee earlier.

If his strong ability is Wings, he will be very effective at killing creeps, and even more effective at pestering Demigods, but he won't have any good tricks, except maybe a really weak Snipe. It will be vital not to let him control a lane, and important to have good combat tricks--since he basically can't do anything but autoattack, any skills you can use to give yourself an advantage in combat will shut him down quickly. Remember, now his only recourse if he's losing is to run, so snares/stuns/etc will be even more valuable.

If his strong ability is Mark... that would be really weird. I guess once you're marked, try and get it off of you quickly, so you don't have the speed debuff when you're trying to chase him.

If his strong ability is Mines, this will be a hard fight, as mines are really good against both creeps and Demigods. First and foremost, mines can be interrupted with a quick trigger finger--TB's Deep Freeze is particularly nasty for this, since it's at-range, and increases Mines' already substantial recast time. Generals have a big advantage against mines, as they can just send their minions forward to set them off; with Horn of Battle, they won't even flinch.

If you're not a general, think carefully when approaching him: "where would he most likely throw mines to block me?" Try to approach from an unexpected direction. If he tries throwing mines at you in combat, run towards him as fast as you can--with any luck, he'll whiff the mines, and you'll now be standing behind him--directly between him and escape, and with no mines for him to hide behind. This is difficult to pull off, but devastating if you do--if you have any stuns or snares, he might just die outright.

If he throws mines anywhere else, pay careful attention, and assume he's about to try and lead you over them--do not follow. Granted, it can be very difficult to dodge mines in the thick of combat, they tend to explode just a tad too quickly, but it is still possible.

A great way to circumvent mine-dodging is to watch him from outside range until he throws mines to kill a wave of creeps; the second these detonate, rush him down, since he now has to wait through the mine's significant recharge time to throw them again, and with any luck he'll be on the run by the time they're ready. In all cases, stack HP like a mofo, just so that getting pegged with all three mines doesn't instantly give him the upper hand.

I agree with you that Reg is the most frustrating DG to play against, due to the impersonal, indirect, pestering manner in which he fights, but by paying careful attention and focusing on the right target, he can be beaten. Good luck!

If you die due to a snipe you have overextended yourself. Reg on map is an automatic -500 hp, so act as though you are always down this many. Best way to deal with him is using teleport/batswarm and stuns to gank, as well as a friend.
