What is a "premade team"?

There is a lot of discussion at the moment about premades. I was just reading one thread when I realised that half of the people were talking about something which was completely different to the other half.

IMO premades are a team of people who have predetermined team tactics (i.e. before they hosted/joined the game) and/or voice communication. I don't think that just because you know or have played with the other people before makes it a "premade".

But the point of this is: What do the rest of you think is a premade, so that we can all be talking about the same thing (or at least argue about it for a while).

If I host or a join a game on my own - my Team is a 'Random Team'. If I say to my friends "Join this game" and we all end up on different teams, this is still a 'Random Team'. However, if I host or a join a game with my friends and ensure all of us are on the same Team with no unknown players, then this is a premade Team. Voice communication or pre-made tactics isn't, to me, the defining characteristic of a Pre-made team, it just makes them more deadly :)

Premade

A pre-arranged group of people who will do an activity together. Often used in MMORPG's
"Hey, are you in a premade (group)"

IMO, a premade has two or more of the following criteria:

  • Players are on voice-chat and communicate openly and often throughout the game
  • Players have a discussed and/or practiced team synergy
  • Players are competitive in nature, with concerns about not only winning the current match, but winning more matches than the competitive premade next door
  • Players are elitist and think that any PuG they beat simply has that much less skill
The first two are the most important criteria, while the third and fourth are simply stereotyping.  If some of the criteria are fulfilled, one cannot assume that they all must hold true.
edit: in contrast to the two posts above mine, I do not think that "playing with friends" necessarily means it's a premade, though from the outside perspective it may be difficult to differentiate

I know thats the Urban Dictionary definition but if that is they case here then whats the fuss about? Just because the team decides to play together before joining up doesn't mean that they will work better as a team than a random group of people.

Fuss is about when the team is good and win consistantly, when the "premade" is bad, and don't win, there is no problem.

I think, in my opinion, the only issue is when Pre-made teams hide their status or go about ensuring they're facing disorganised opponents to ensure victory. The most common example is a Pre-made team who lie and claim not to be pre-made and then proceeds to dominate their lesser organised opponents with planned strategies. Organised Teams themselves aren't the problem.

Can you beat the AI in single player? Hopefully. Now imagine 3 humans vs 3 ai and you have a premade vs pug.

What I am saying is there are (at least) two different definitions of pre-mades and I am trying to narrow it down to one.

When you say Pre-made are you saying it is different to Organised Teams? If so which is which? Because the thing I am confused about is if you should declare yourself pre-made even if you don't fall into Primal Zed's or my oppinion of pre-made (i.e. if you are just playing together without any sort of additional teamwork to the norm).

If you organise a game where you're ensuring that you're all on the same team, you're a Premade. You can have no planned strategies, no additional communication methods - you're arranged to play together. You pre-arranged your Team; your a pre-made. It's as simple as that in my mind.

Two or more people that play together regularly on the same team.  You don't need to be good.  You don't need to be on voice chat.  You do not even need to know other person that well.  Some premades are good, others are bad.

I play both with a premade (my brother) and also as a pugger.  If I host a 5v5 game and my brother is playing on my team, I will answer "yes" if someone asks if it's a premade even though only two of us on the team are a "premade."  I'll qualify it that only two of us are premade, but I still consider the game a premade.  I get a kick when people say they aren't a premade because they have a random third player - that's just disingenous to me.
