Warning: Product causes insomnia

Well I'd been fooling around with a military game, but that style of play just isn't for me. So, I decided to start anew, but I'd up the AI level a bit this time.

So, medium galaxy, common, clusters, all subnormal.
I decided to go with the pacifists this time then added +60 diplo, +10 influence, and luck. The first map that came up had an isolated planet with virtually nothing else within 3 sectors, so I hit ctrl-N.

On the next go, Earth had a PQ of 20 and Sol IV had a 26. I'd never seen a PQ that high and there appeared to be plenty of other stars around, so I cranked up the military production and gave it a go. I had no idea just what a good start it would be. Just a few years later I had 14 star systems and constructors on the way to Influence, econ, morale and combat resources. Amazingly enough there is a second influence resource sitting in my backyard but when I found it, the Torians already had a starbase setup. No matter, I'll buy it from them in a few more years.

So, I save the game at 11pm so I can tune in Adult Swim on Cartoon Network and get a ride in on the ol' stationary bike. 1am rolls by and there I am...lying in bed wide awake, my mind racing through ways to culture flip the Torians is quickly as possible. Starbase? Influence mining? Building up my systems with embassies and such (They are totally hemmed in)? All of the above? Or should I just leave them be and let them hang around as a trade partner?

Scenario after scenario running through my adled brain...even though I knew I had to get up at 6. Every time I closed my eyes, the star map was there. The Drengin lie somewhere to the east. Possibly in the SE corner, which was almost devoid of systems. What would they do in their desperation? And where are the other AI lurking? And? And?

I'm telling you...Galactic Civilizations should come with a warning: This product has been found to induce insomnia and drain productivity in 9 out of 10 Terrans. Use at your own risk.

This warning provided in accordance with United Planets resolution 1072.3

Computer games (and other likely activities) function like non-addictive (usually) psychostimulants, so you can stay awake for a long time.

I agree. Also, after finally breaking loose from the game around ~2 am, I find it hard to sleep since I keep ruminating on how to beat the current game.

My early AM efficiency at work is shot because although every night I tell myself I'm going to go to bed at decent hour, every night I look up to find that 2, sometimes 3AM mysteriously snuck up on me again.

The thing is how do you get your non-gameplaying wife to understand that? :)

Persuade her by saying that you are not drinking, you are not playing golf etc...She prefers me to be at home than go out LOL

How about "Your eyes are like two Drengin Overlords floating in the serene vastness of space"?

This is one of the few games that suck me straight into the "Zone". A state of mind where a substantial amount the body's power is channeled to increase the number of CPU cycles in my mind, while decreasing power to all non-critical bodily functions. This is when I become oblivious to environment, to time, etc.

I've also had many a restless night after the mind could not understand why it is suddenly not in the "fight or flight" mode but rather told to doze off into sleep.

'snap' - I was just thinking the same thing! First night I got it was a week night. Started playing and then realized it was 5.30 am! That has never happened to me ever before I swear . . . My productive capacity the following day at work was 'minimal' :)

aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggg........ I keep spending entire nights playing this game. I start them at a decent hour, then before i go to sleep i decide to play for an hour, and then 6 hours later I'm telling myself that one more turn and i can go to bed. I finally stop, either by winning or forcing myself to stop, and instead of sleeping soundly i find myself thinki9ng about what i should do next, what i should've done, or ... the worst is I actually wound up dreaming about GalCiv... the game started playing out in my head while i was asleep. This game needs a Surgeon General's Warning stamped on the side:
"Warning: GalCiv has been known to have addictive affects"
"Warning: GalCiv may cause insomnia, sleep deprivation, lucid dreaming, hallucinations, and restlessness."
"Warning: GalCiv may be too amazing of a game for some people. Use at your own discretion."

This is one of the Stardock team's particularly diabolical strokes of genius: as you play for extended periods of time, the game installs itself on your brain. It's very convienient for when you don't have access to a computer (or conciousness, for that matter), but there truly is no escape from the greatness known as GalCiv at that point ;)

Somehow this game really captivates the mind. Was it similar when the Allied were cracking Enigma, I wonder. Anything else possibly compares to this?

jn64,

The only other game that had me up for 24 hours is Civ 3. The first time that I played it, I was soon to find myself staring out the window and it was 8 am and I started about 12 noon.

When I played the original GalCiv, it was an absorbing game but not as addictive as it's current incarnation.

Way to go, Brad!! The same goes for the rest of the crew. :-)

It's the world's first nanonarcotic! Way to go Brad

We need to qualify this statement;

It's the world's first (Non-MMORPG) nanonarcotic! Way to go Brad

God only knows the hours trapped inside, Everquest, UO, Asherons Call and Earth & Beyond. :notsure:

Brad is sitting in a chair right now, looking at his computer screen, counting the money in his wallet and laughing his ass off at all us addicts while chanting, "CHA-CHING!"

Hey, it doesn't matter if Brad is counting his money or not. This is a good game and we are willing victims. :D
