You should include the minimum requirements from sins as well.

It's not like everyone has sins installed or will be willing to hunt down the minimum specs.

The requirements on sins are intentionally conservative, so running below them isn't unheard of.

I've played SOASE on lower specs

Win XP SP2

Intel Celeron CPU 2.66 Ghz

512 RAM

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Tornado ( I don't know what the "Tornado" means. but it's a Tornado  )

The game was laggggy mid-late time

Sins used to lag on my old rig:

3.2 ghz pentium D (dual core)

2gb DDR2 Ram

256mb 8600gts OC

And now it occasionally lags on my new rig:

3.33 ghz core 2 quad q6700

2gb DDR3 Ram

Two 512mb 9800gtx+ in SLI

The CPU profile while playing the game shows the core that sins is runing on maxed out, even though it is supposedly multithreaded.

If your system can handle it, my advice is to not look too hard at why... just sit back and enjoy...

Of course it will work fine on lower specs. Now if you max out the population limit and resource speed. Start a 4 to 6 person game. Of course you might need the recommended specs to see all the action when there is massive fleet on fleet on fleet on fleet action.

It does most things on one of the cores and a little bit of stuff on the other. I think the only thing it does on the second core is texture stuff, I'm probably wrong though

Sounds about right.  THe multi-core stuff was added a little late in the game, trying to fine-thread it any further than they managed would (probably) have required a complete rewrite of the engine.

And while I knew that then, now that I'm taking CSCI 144 (OS's and drivers and threads, oh my!) I'm starting to really understand what that means.

Sins requirments are far from a hard limit. I was able to play it on a stock Sony VAIO bought in 2004 with an intergrated graphics card and 512mb ram. It ran fine until 300+ ships jumped into a well to duke it out.
