Regulus, let's discuss his uses

Regulus, let's discuss his uses

Look guys/gals, only about 2% of regulus players are good with him.  And there is a regulus in every game, nearly every team, on PUG games.  Let's just make an assumption and say that you aren't one of the elite.

Here are some pointers.  I know you're probably new to the game, and the real machinations of fights are a little foreign.

-Standing back and sniping does not help your team.

Why?  Because one of your teammates is trying to hold a lane in a 2 versus 1.  You need to find someway of getting in there and making it a 2v2.  Remember, if you keep moving ("twitching around"), you will not auto-attack.  You need to keep auto-attacking.  Get the idea?

-Getting kills does not mean you are doing well.

Why?  See pointer #1.  You aren't "earning" those kills.  You're stealing them or just getting the last hit in as they run.  Spending it on yourself will cost the game.  You need to spend 90% of that money on your team's upgrades.  If you are a ways from an upgrade, buy an item for yourself, but be ready to sell it THE MINUTE YOU HIT THE WAR SCORE LEVEL that you need for that team upgrade.  A regulus with 5000hp still gets pwned by a UB or pretty much anything.

-You better have mines.  And you better NOT throw them on creep waves if it'll drain your mana or if a DG fight is brewing.

Why?  That's your biggest contribution to a lane fight.  Run up and throw 1200 dmg worth of mines on the enemy, plus slowing him.  That turns fights.  That wins games.  Practice your throw, aim for the guys feet.  Don't throw behind him or in front.  "In case he runs" does not help your dying teammate.  This is not about you, it's about the guy you are supporting (and you are support).  Ask anyone, you can't count how often a reg player will waste all his mana on creeps and then float off during a fight with "oom".

Those three pointers will help out more than anything else.  I would suggest getting maximum speed and a few hp items.  Most builds call for "no scope", but I disagree.  Maybe a pro player doesn't need that, but we're not pro's, now are we?  You need that max range, to stand behind the DG your supporting, auto-attacking his target and throwing mines on the enemy.  When they come after you, you run like hell.  If you're super fast, you'll get away quick and can turn around and re-engage.  Max mines will slow the enemy, also, which is a huge boost.

It's not about kills, it's about holding a lane.  You probably can't do that, especially with a DG right there.  You need to link up with a teammate, and work to support him/her.  I can't count how many games that we've had a useless reg (pretty much all games with reg).  And he thinks he's superman since he stole 9 kills, then buys gold and priests and never again helps out.

Look at the big picture.  If your team is constantly falling back from lanes, your losing.  If your team is not dying very much, but you're still losing, it is PROBABLY because of you.  Because regulus is weak and it's 3 versus 2 out there, with you contributing a measely 20% of what any other DG would.

My biggest advice would be to stop playing regulus to hide from the fight.  Pick a tank DG and practice some, learn how it goes.  Sedna is way more useful in a fight as a support DG, but if you MUST play Regulus, play him stronger.  Saving your own skin and buying items for youself is costing the game, AND IT IS YOUR FAULT.

I just got shat on by a Reg/TB pre. Times RoI and Snipe gives you a HUGE hit at realllly long range.

I havnt been owned that hard since I started playing again.

@ HOrseStrangler, kinda circular logic.  Granted UB is very quick with inner beast and all items, I'm looking to use a Anklet, boots combo (maybe even wand) and upgrade to super boots (forgot name, sorry) ASAP.

Had a fairly effective regulus today, forgot the name.  Bossy SOB though, and mostly concerned with kill stealing.  BUT, he bought all upgrades, so I was happy.  Not the best regulus though, since he withheld ANY snipes until the killing blow, so he never turned a battle, just ended it.  (just looked it up, was CelMare playing regulus)

I'm still looking into the gimped reg using total speed + hp items.  Screw armor.  Max range, mines and snipe.  Universal cubes.  Total waterboy build.  Has been successful so far, but I think it's only useful in PUG games.  In a serious game, I wouldn't play reg, I'm not that good to push a lane with him.

Honestly I don't see how it's circular if you're referring to what I perceive as the issues he faces with the snare cap (since you mentioned UB speed and that's what I mentioned in the same context).

I just think it's a major issue with reg's dependance on timed snares. There's a stronger cooldown object you can buy fairly inexpensively that'll let you counter a large swath of his skills/playstyle, and I find that problematic. On the other hand Maim (or at least a point in it), penitence, diseased claws, and any other ability you can keep up indefinitely is going to be less vulnerable to that kind of hard counter  becase you're not going to play as though you don't always expect your opponent to be mobile, you just expect them to be less mobile than you are, which they likely will still be.

"With more difficulty in execution there should be a bigger payoff IMO."

Reward Player Skill. The most powerful characters are the most difficult to play. This sounds ... fun and emotionally pleasing but it's dangerous thing to do. For things like 2D sidescrolling fighters this might be a good thing since those games are damn hard to begin with. Eg, there was one character in a game that would attack when you pushed a button AND released a button. He was horrifically OP but he was INSANELY difficult to play since you had to time EVERYTHING PERFECTLY AND IT WAS INSANE.

I see your point. I was thinking more in terms of luck though - not a factor that can be overcome by being more skillful. Reg needs luck to pull things like mine traps off. I was thinking this when I typed 'difficulty in execution'.

In the vein of this thread I have some advice for playing reg. I agree with Cind3ers assessment: You have to play an aggressive reg to help win. You have to get into fights. You have to snipe to give your teammates a better chance at winning their battles. Most importantly, you have to worry more about getting war score and citups than anything else.

If you must buy an item for yourself, make sure it's a wand of speed or a mana item. And by mana item, I mean a plenor, vlemish, or hungarlings. I like getting hungarlings, even though it greedy, because in group combat it gives my allies and me a 25% mana cost redux, which is pretty huge, so I consider it a bit of a team item.

As far as abilities go, this is what I do:

I get mark. Yes, I do. Yes it costs mana. I cast it all the time too. I get it because along with mines, it helps me to actually push lanes, at least for a while. The mana cost is very low for the damage output in group combat, thx to huge AoE radius. It's very useful to me. I do, however, agree that scope is a viable alternative in some situations.

At lvl 7, with my build, I can choose between getting mines 3 or snipe 3. My choice complete depends on what is going on in-game. If I'm pushing ok, it goes to snipe so I have more punch elsewhere. If not, it goes to mines.

I get fs1, I usually get cur1 unless someone beats me to it. I'll get cur2. I'll get some creeps - often cats and/or giants. I can afford this, along with hungarlings, plenor, unbreakable boots, decent armor, a wand, and a ton of portals. If you can't afford it, it's probably because you're overextending. It's a finer line with reg than any other dg between too aggressive and not aggressive enough. Learn where it is. If you're on it, you'll know because you won't need to visit the shop for quite some time.

Avoid 1 on 1 melee combat. The only chance you have is if you manage to mine and mark damage the hell out of them before they come in. If they survive all of that, run. If you have a team that knows what they are doing, they will see a gank opportunity. When they port in, turn around and fight with them.

You will be at your best in group combat. As the OP said, stay at the back and throw mines in. Snipe works great too, for an additionial burst. Use snipe to help kill the current target. I typically do 700-800 dmg per snipe in group fights. Stay back, but don't leave. Don't stop throwing mines. Mark works best in groups too.

Reg is particularly good at clearing tower farms. If there is an  enemy rook, reg needs to help control him. Mine the towers, and be smart about it. Try and get more than one tower at a time using mines.

Above all, reg is hard to play well. Harder than other DGs.
