Demigod - what's next?

Demigod - what's next?

Clearing things up

Okay, I've been reading a lot of different interpretations of forum comments that I or mods have made on the release of Oculus (which officially was announced today).

First, I want to give a big hand to Gas Powered Games who did an incredible job on Oculus. He is amazing! Make sure you read up on his story which you can view by clicking on the arrow button in the Demigod selection screen by his portrait.

As was the case with Demon Assassin, Gas Powered Games didn't take the easy way out. They could probably have gotten away with just reskinning existing Demigods with a mix of powers and called it a day.  But they didn't. In both cases, they made sure they got new and interesting abilities that add strategic depth to the game.

The Demon Assassin's swap ability is just killer (often literally). Oculus's chain lightning is extremely fun.

Second, I want to address some of the flame wars that came up on the forum. As some of you know, in order to release Oculus we had to release an update to Demigod. That update included directions on how to add him to your account manually.  In hindsight, that shouldn't have been put in the release notes but rather simply waited until he was officially announced.

The confusion some users had in trying to add him to their account prior to the web page being updated created considerable angst on all sides.  The original idea was to have a store page where users would "buy" him for $0 in order to determine the level of interest in DLC content that may not always be free.

However, it was decided that we would just let users add him to their Demigod account by logging into multiplayer (after that, they can play him SP as well).  We can, with that, still determine the number of active users there are to determine what opportunities there may be in the future.

Third, with regards to future DLC, as I said previously, these two Demigods are the two promised free demigods. They represent the last two free ones Stardock will be paying to have developed. Future content in the form of maps or demigods would have to be paid for.  On in other words, we ponied up to have GPG make these two, but future ones have to be paid for by players if it is determined there's a sufficient market for them.  I realize some people are upset and clearly the easier path is to just not say anything but part of what makes Stardock what it is is that we try to be transparent on such things.

Fourth, As the North American publisher of Demigod (Atari is the worldwide retail publisher of Demigod other than NA), we will continue to forward to GPG all player requests, problem reports, etc.

Fifth, It is our intention to lobby to have player created mods integrated into the game for future updates to choose from.  There have been some outstanding tweaks and changes made to the game by players that we would really like to see in the game but the ultimate decision goes with the owner of the game -- Gas Powered Games.  But having worked with them for over a year now, I can say that GPG is very customer focused and so I don't foresee any issues there.

So go have fun! I'll see you online.

Brad - is 1.3 (clan wars) still in the roadmap or is this more or less where the game will stay with the exception of potential DLC? I know there was talk about 1.3, but I, for one, would like to know if that's still something we can expect. Thanks!

I'd appreciate an answer if you have a moment.  Something to the effect of "we're not planning on doing 1.3 at this point" or "you guys will still get 1.3."  I'm not looking for any flame nonsense either, but its unclear to me whether or not 1.3 will appear FOR SURE or not.  Thanks!

The clan support would be part of an update to Impulse as part of the Elemental release later on.

As to how it will appear in Demigod, I can't say at this stage since I can't speak for Gas Powered Games.

But the idea is to move more and more of the whole lobby/match making system away from the hard-coded stuff you see in Demigod to an overlay system.

Some people have complained about the Demigod lobby and the reason it is sometimes flakey is that it's all written in LUA (nothing wrong with LUA per se) but it's a very complex LUA script.

But with an overlay system, we would be able to set up all kinds of different games and matches including clans.  But like I said, it won't likely get in until around Elemental's release since that's where the budget for that is coming from.

As for actual EXE versions of Demigod updates (i.e. v1.3, v1.4, etc.) that's really up to GPG.  Right now, they're in crunch time with SupCom 2 so it's unlikely we'll know what their plans are until after Supcom 2 ships.

Thanks for the clear explanation, Froggy.  Much appreciated!

People really want the Oak to be interuptable when shielded? Is this really the case? I'm kinda surprised that people would want to lose the ability to teleport out when using a shield.

I think is something that should be changed (though I'm not sure why we are talking changes here :)).  Think about it.  He has an ability that enables him to run like hell without taking any damage.  To make it worse, he can port away wtihout any risk.  Now I personally don't mind it that much as I enjoy trying to kill oaks with level 3 shield, but that usually requires teammates stacking stuns extremely well so the shield never goes off.  But, I think its way too strong.  Being impossible to hurt is incredibly strong.  But being impossible to hurt and uninterruptable (for ports, portions, locks, sigls, etc) is op.  I'm really not sure how this isn't clear either.  IMO - to have an ability that guarantee's exit from a battle 100% of the time if you smart, you should be a weak, slow character.  Not a character that can tear things up like oak with reasonably high hp.

sadly, removed stun immunity from Level III shield and you take away one of his key strengths. Get rid of that, and I see him mostly as a tier II character. It's just too important for saves and even then you can beat an Oak 1v1... that's why he HAS to shield, then sometimes he beats you ;)

I disagree.  You might as well give him an ability that instantly ports an ally back to base (I'd abuse that and force my allies back to base all the time just to be a jerk though ;)).  Its still a very strong ability if you can cast a shield and someone has 3 or > seconds to run though.  If I have 4 seconds where I can't take damage, shouldn't I be able to get away?  My 2 cents...

also, why are we talking about this here.  Let's not thread crap - open up another thread to discuss if you want.  I'm out here.  Thanks!

Hi Frogboy,

As i see not there mabye 1000 people interested in buying 2 more maps (2v2 or 3v3 - no larger)

I am taking a wild guess that 1k people actively play this online, obviously if they sink 4 hours a night into DG (or even 1 ) then 2 more maps will add HUGE value to their gameplay experience (at a small price)

Can you give us hard numbers on active players? Can you give us a rough number on cost of 2x maps?

From what i have seen there is mabey 30 players in Africa (online) 60 players in Australia/nz

400 Americans and 400 euro's    ++ scattered players

All people who dont play this game online --- will never look at DLC for this game, count this audience out from your numbers.

So if SD was to sell 1k units of $5 map pack = $5, 000     >> how close is this to the cost of 2x maps?

I don't think they can/will/should comment on specific numbers of cost to produce product as they are a business. But running on the numbers you quoted, 5 thousand bucks is chump change and would only keep the peeps at Stardock in cappuccino's for a week i'd guess.

Simple, make lock a demigod, not a solid unbreakable magical lockdown, and give an interrupt/stun/silence to each other dg.

Or you could make an item worth 450 that can undo locks on a 55 second cooldown.

No, that's itemwars.

But totally worth it

I appreciate the update Brad, this has put me at ease regarding the future of DLC for Demigod.  I'll keep my fingers crossed that you guys do determine there is a decent market for new maps and such.  I'll definitely be buying.

this is great. really. i'm not a fan of GPG at all, but stardock is doing great things by making them stick to the game and improve it. i know a lot of people have blamed stardock for game-related issues, but this post makes it very clear that you're doing everything possible to make this game a good one.

This picture states that Frogboy is playing Demigod 1.3? Maybe it'll be released eventually.
