April/May/June 2010 2v2 Demigod Community Tournament - Results Thread

This thread has been created for the purpose of tracking results in the April/May 2010 2v2 Demigod Community Tournament.

Current status:  WINNER! - King_Of_Thorns + Zen_God

Round 1a began at 5PM on 4/21/2010 and ended at 11:59PM EST on 4/30/2010.

Round 1b began at Midnight on 5/1/2010 and ended at 11:59PM EST on 5/7/2010.

Round 2 began at Midnight on 5/8/2010 and ended at 11:59PM EST on 5/23/2010.

Round 3 (SEMIFINALS) began at Midnight on 5/24/2010 and will end at 11:59PM EST on 5/30/2010.

Round 4 (FINALS) began Midnight on 5/31/2010 and will end at 11:59PM EST on 6/5/2010

Players responsible for hosting and scheduling their own matches.  Then, the winning team must provide a replay and a link to the pantheon stats here for tracking purposes, for every game played.  Please feel free to use this thread get your matches scheduled.

There will be a need to disqualify teams that aren't making the required effort to get their games in without penalizing another team that's doing whatever they can to get a match scheduled.  It's probably best if teams that are trying to organize matches go on record in the forums.  For instance, if I was playing against say AtMa and Ba, I'd post something like the following in this thread:

Atma + Ba:  trouser and pacov are generally available M-F from 5pm EST - 1AM EST.  Please let us know if some time in that slot would work for you or recommend a time slot that works.  I'll PM you in a few days if I haven't heard from you or we can discuss this on lagwars vent.

Something like that.  If it comes down to disqualifying teams because they didn't get their match in, the more info and tracking you have indicating that you did your best to get the match scheduled the better.

Here is the FINAL bracket  - UPDATED 6/5/2010

Tournament Rules:

  • You may only select characters as indicated in the grid below:

  • Each match in the tournament will be the best 2 out of 3 games
  • All matches will be played on cataract with default settings (the only exceptions being AI HP on Very High and AI Gold/XP on low)
  • After teams are formed, they will be randomly placed into a bracket to determine who will fight who.  Everything will be random initially in round 1.  In the following rounds, the winners from one game will play the winners from another based on location in the bracket starting from the top on to the bottom.
  • Each team will play 1 round on light side, then 1 round on dark side.  If there is a 3rd round, the team that had the fastest win in game 1 or 2 gets to pick the side they want to be on (keep in mind the following rule).
  • The team that is on the dark side must pick their characters and ready up first.  Then the light gets to pick and the dark side does not have a chance to adjust their characters.
  • To track your wins, you must do the following - post the replay at gamereplays.org.  If you have issues with gamereplays, upload the file to rapid share and provide us with a link.  Also, provide a link to the match in the pantheon and let me know if its a win or loss.  The winning team should do this for each and every match.
  • UberFix 1.02 must be used (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/374315) UberFix is a mod that fixes many of the bugs in Demigod.  Check the modding forum for everything that is fixed by UberFix 1.02.

How will we handle crashes:

If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match.  If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark).  If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win.  If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, a third party will review the replay of the match and render a decision.  Be aware that the 3rd party must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone.

How we will handle invalid game states:

The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match.  In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes.  If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and we will review.  If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team should be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts. Please be reasonable, though.  We all know that Demigod has its bugs and its still pretty easy to encounter an invalid game state even if no one has intentionally triggered it.  If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof.  Be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any sort of foul play, so please be mindful when submitting requests for review.

Prizes:

Outside of prestige in our small community, there is also a cash prize thanks to community contributions.  The total (and probably final) amount paid for this tournament is $200.  If you would like to contribute to the pot, please pm me and I'll get you the needed info to send me a payment.  If individuals do not come through on their pledges, I will not be personally covering the difference.  My goal is to collect the pledged amount before the tournament starts and I will be providing updates as I receive the pledged money.

Please thank our contributors and consider contributing to the prize yourself.

The problem is, the current setup made it advantageous for people to not bother trying to schedule their matches or posting replays.

If the rule was that every person had to post their availability for the entire week within XX days of each round starting and ALL scheduling had to take place in a single thread, not in pms, or in game, etc it would be easy to track.

Also I don't think free agent teams should be allowed.  If people can't be bothered to find a partner on the forums than how can we expect them to bother scheduling a match and showing up for it?

Lastly I'd really like to see the next one be 3v3.  I know that's going to be rather difficult but the mechanics of 2v2 are pretty retarded compared to what the game has to offer.

Alot of good feedback, mags.  Ty.  I think 3v3 would be a blast (I'd enjoy it more anyway), but I honestly don't know how many awesome 3 man teams we could come up with. I'm not opposed to giving it a shot though.

And I'm not opposed to axing the free agent system.  We can have people post that are interesting in playing that don't have a team, but instead of matching them, force them to team up before the tourney starts.  If they can't get a 3 man team, then they are out.

hey agreed on needing clearly defined rules.  It will be much easier for next tourney (assuming it happens) now that we have this one nearly done.  I mean.. there were a LOT of things that needed to be figured out.

I thiiink that the combos should be looked at slightly though because I honestly think there is 1 team without a counter (that will be seen in our next game >.<).  Kalel and I are working on it and maybe I'm wrong but.. we'll see how it goes.

The only thing I have to say about our game was that Kalel and I were ready to play the entire week up until the DAY you guys wanted lol.

Perhaps force people to be proactive about scheduling their games with exact dates / times they are and aren't available.  i.e. Kalel / Rawr available any time, preferably not 5-12 cst, can't do May 15.  The person they play against is then responsible to find a time that fits in that schedule.  MOST of the scheduling issues have resulted from people simply not fucking posting or replying in game (it was nigh impossible to get our first game scheduled to do lack of communication by the other team).

Anyway, I don't see a problem with the rest of the tourney finishing quickly and on time.  All of us are on vent and play often, minus extreme circumstances (like someone else's mobo dying >:/)

Disagreed on 2v2 mechanics being retarded.  It's still team play.

While a 3v3 tourney would be great fun, there simply aren't enough people to get a good tourney going for this imo.

Agreed on the free agent thing.  Actually find a teammate or don't play.  Those people tended to be the biggest problem from what I saw.

Here's my suggestion for the next tournament.:

How about a 3v3 round robin tournament?

We could have 7 or 8 3v3 teams and everyone has to play everyone in a space of 4 - 5 weeks?

Team that wins the most is declared the overall winner of the tournament  ^_^

Well, that was going to be mine and Brandon Varn's suggestion for the next one anyway.

Having no brackets would make the tournament much more flexible in my opinion.  And more to the point, It means everyone is getting more games in which, I think can only be a good thing  ;P

Also, I'm inclined to agree with magnus and RAWRRR that we should only allow teams that already have teammates.  Randomly assigning partners was a disaster.  We've learnt that from this tournament.

Give me your thoughts on this one!

Heu...its normal that game 2 for RAWRRRR + KalelSmX vs pacov + trousersnake isn't the good one. It retirect to a game to pacov + trousersnake v maxsteel32 + sebacoyl instead. Can u fix this plz.

edit: this is the good one Game 2: http://www.gamereplays.org/demigod/replays.php?game=51&show=details&id=126214

Good catch - updating the link.  Thanks!

I like shred deamons idea. 3v3 tournament(agreed with magnus, much better than 2v2s)  considering the crowd in lagwars, around 10 teams can be formed, each team play with each other twice. For wins you get 2 points and for losses you get 1 point. This way more variety of games will be there and people won't have the leave the tournament just after 2 games.

No free agent team should be allowed due to scheduling problems. And i think unless both teams agrees on to specify a different time, the time for the games should take place in the same time frame for everyone when everyone is more likely to be available like on weekend afternoons. (evening in europe, afternoon in US or something like that). If a team doesn't show up in the specified time, it should be a counted as a loss.

I think match ups shouldn't be completely limited with demigod selection. Like if teams are gonna play 2 matches, 1 match can be a free combo, the second game can be enforced to use so called tier-2 demigods.

So what i am suggesting is pretty much a demigod community league. Just some ideas along with shred's.

Mmm mmm I like the sound of a 3 vs 3 tourney.

Let's just get this one finished as soon as possible because I feel as though all those people who were interested in following the tournament have stopped altogether.

Yeah the tourney is taking horribly tooo long.  I would love a round robin 3v3 with balanced based on a point system.

I've been watching this tourney with interest, but I gotta say, the scheduling thing seems pretty ridiculous.  Players in the tourney shouldn't be given the luxury of picking their match times -- they should get assigned a date and time, and make time for it, not have the tourney make time for them.

It's been a great tourney so far.  Great replays to watch.  And at least a partial re-vitalization of Demigod.  Next time, how about multiple divisions?  Tier 1, Tier 2, and maybe win % lower divisions.  Maybe shorter time limits on rounds.   Anyway, I want to thank Pacov for putting this one together.

See... we need to make quite a few improvements... consider how long our 2v2 tournament is taking.  Now people are talking about 3v3 round robin style... I like the round Robin idea, but that's only great if there's a high level of availability.

I'm not really sure what the best way to do things would be, though, but a change will be needed.  I think everyone posting their availability for a 1 week period is appropriate.  Then a match is scheduled based on the availability info.  If a specific individual that indicates that they would be available and then cannot play for any reason should then cause the whole team to be disqualified.  No substitutions.  No rescheduling.  PERIOD.  This would have the added impact that a whole team would likely be a bit pissed with the individual that caused them to forfeit... probably increasing the odds that the person would not flake again... also, our tournament would begin and end on time.  So, we'd need a short time window for everyone to report in their availability.  Then a short time window for scheduling.  Then actually playing the match.  If it ended up as a 3v3 tournament, we'd have like 1 captain per team that would be responsible for reporting on their teams availability, etc.

  • Format. If the format moves up to 3v3, I'd suggest having 4 player teams, with one alternate. The alternate can't be on more than one team, but the "active" 3 players can be any combination of the 4.
  • Executive Power. The coordinator should have full power, and any disagreements should be at his discretion to resolve. None of this pacov is nice and caves in to the community nonsense.
  • Get rid of the money prize. Sure it is exciting, but you also have to worry about any laws that are broken. Goodness knows that free giveaways have to adhere to a number of laws. You also have to worry about players from other countries.
  • The coordinator may have to not play in the tournament. We had people casting doubts upon pacov's impartiality. While that's rubbish it shouldn't really happen.
  • Improve Tone. If the tournament will be used to advertise Demigod, then we have a problem. There was a ton of rather inappropriate content for an advertisement campaign. I'd suggest more strict rules of decorum for the tournament.
  • Commentary. The commentary ideas were really good, but they never got off the ground. The best were pacov's lengthy write-ups, which everyone loved. Getting some video commentaries would be really good for the game.
  • Scheduling. Already discussed enough, but scheduling should be firmer. Perhaps some scheduling software on the internet could provide a decent solution?

Speaking of the tourney that is still going on, when are you fellas playing?

back on the 3v3 topic - do you guys think we can put together 4 teams that would be relatively even matches in a 3v3 on cata?  > 6 3 man teams?  If so, then 3v3 round robin sounds fun.  I don't like the 1 man alternate idea.  Each team will likely have to call out their availability beforehand matches will be scheduled - I doubt alternates will be needed (plus its just one more guy in the mix, that will likely be on 2 different teams).  I completely agree re: executive power.  The community should decide on the initial rules.  The executor should enforce them and make calls on anything not covered by the initial rules.  Re: the money prize - if people want it, I'm for it.  re: the coordinator not playing in the tourney - I don't think that's necessary, though I'm not quite opposed.  If we had a rule that said you are DQ'd if you don't get your game played by X date with no exceptions, then that's a pretty easy rule to enforce dogmatically and it doesn't matter if the executor is in that game or not.

Some time tonight I believe.  We got a practice game in yesterday but Rawrr didn't want to do an official match only one day after they finished the last round, which I understand.  So we're hoping to get at least one real game in tonight.
