Hey guys.  In our upcoming tournament (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/396231), we will be looking into providing some live commentary along with streaming video of the replays.  Currently, rawrrr and I will providing some commentary.  Anyway, I'd like to get some practice in.  Does anyone have any high quality games that are somewhat exciting that we could get a link to the replay of?  Obviously, it must be for the current version of demigod.  Anyway, a little practice commentary will go some distance in getting folks interested imo, and will likely motivate us to provide commentary for more and more games in the tourney.  Please be thoughtful of any replays you might submit as I only have so much time to dedicate to this.  The more balanced the game, the more impressive the replays will be imo.  Anyway, if you have anything, please provide a link here and give me a little info as to why you think the game was exciting.  Thanks!

I rendered it in 15 minute chunks into .wmv

you can upload straight into youtube w/ .wmv

 

Also, I talked to a buddy of mine who did the bulk of the work for the replays for Vodka (top 10 world guild in WoW.. high quality replays).. said he uses premiere primarily but that there is little difference between vegas (what I used) and premiere.  Although he did say that vegas was slightly easier to use (why he then still uses premiere is beyond me.. but w/e)

I'm also curious to your approach for watching the replays (my apologies if you mentioned it already).  Are you just watching the replays 1 time through and then providing your commentary on the fly?  I assume that's what you are doing.

I think he did it "live" without having seen it before. And I think that makes the commentary way better if the commentator doesn't know what's going on :D

Yeah - I agree some, but if you know what's going to happen in advance, its much easier to slow down the action and give a quick blow by blow.  I think what I have in mind would take too much time to produce very often.  I'd say, do it live, but then have a breakdown that follows immediately after the replay that offers some analysis of key plays and so on.  Frankly though, if we are just going to do a bunch of these for the tourney, the faster it is to put them together, the better.

pacov i could see you doing a daily of Demigod to analyze such things, where you often don't have time for in the game because too much action is going on in a 3v3 :D at least a weekly !

edit - you know who would be funny as shite doing replay commentary?  Peter.  Someone would do something silly and he would start into a rant about something.  I'd find it amusing anyway

While we play a game, replay data is stored somewhere.

  • If it's on the hard drive, it won't be hard to create a program allowing to live-stream the replay while it's being built.
  • If it's stored in RAM before getting transfered to hard drive (in LastGame.DGReplay), I dunno how to catch it but it must be possible.

Live replay have the advantage of being almost real-time, letting people watch wherever they want during the game, and a comentator can create a channel on vent/teamspeak/mumble to provide real-time commentaries. People have been doing this for a french competition on Supreme Commander and it worked great. If someone can say me where the replay data is stored during the game, i think i can develop the software.

About video encoding, the best quality/size ratio is obtained by using x264 (http://x264.nl/). It has to be run on command-line, but it's not complicated, gives great quality for small size, and uses all the cores of the CPU.

For file hosting FileFront is good, but youtube too as long as videos are uploaded in HD.

For video capture, imo FRAPS is the best. If you record at 30 fps, in a reasonable resolution, you'll have no problem recording a full 40min game with 100 Go of free space on your drive.

PS: I can provide a registered FRAPS v3 <.<

ok pt1 is available now.  The quality is... bad... I used windows movie maker to upload it.  I'm guessing it recompressed it to poop city.  I'm uploading pt2 now and looking into another way to upload without the files going to hell.

So much time wasted...

The 1 that is up now is too bad of quality imo.  I'm uploading a larger file now that should be an improvement.

whew.. finally all done with this weekend.  Srsly.. started out on the range @ 8 a.m. friday, finished 10 p.m. friday.. started saturday @ 5:30 a.m. and finished 8 p.m. , sunday did physical fitness test @ 7 a.m. and finished 4 p.m. .. Then I crashed for 15 hours of sleep lol.

 

Anyway.. I should have another replay up soon.. I'll look whether I want to do the one you asked about or the one mcshane requested.  Also, just about to watch ur commentary :)

Crazy weekend, I played Demigod and slept is about it lol.  Get a team together man, some great practice games going on lately.  I wouldn't recommend it if I didn't you think you could win and Jona_'s going to be upset, but I think you, hedgie, and Omicron should team up.  Hedgie sounded like he wanted to play before thunder ditched him and since it seems Kalel isn't interested, Omicron is the best remaining option.

hey rawrrr, is the 3s of you,orcun,mcshane vs me mith and 2nnnils to long to cast? I think once the game hits the 20min marks there is nonstop crazy action going on that I love to hear your words on :) I thought that game was exceptional, especially in the end with bulwark xD I would like you guys to focus on more exceptional quality games, because those are always more fun to watch imo.
