Demigod-style game from Valve?

Apparently they are announcing it today. Some of you with more inside info may have heard of it, but it was news to me. The PCGamer link:

Will update with actual details when they come out.

Update-

Looks like Valve took the easy way out. They are basically just going to polish up DOTA. Sigh. Why can't people see how infinitely superior Demigod is to DOTA and all of its clones? While we complain about balancing issues in DG, trying to balance dozens of heroes is even more absurd.

Still, more games in this genre will increase the chances of us seeing DG sequels (direct or indirect) at some point.

I heard about it not too long ago, a voice actor for the game tweeted about it and it got spread through the nets.  (I have no use for twitter at this time lol)

I'm excited for the game, but won't play it unless it has zoom and rotate lol.

Yeah - this is one I'll keep an eye on.  Think I heard about it awhile ago as well.  Looking forward to some screens and more info.

do i get another queen? YAY! wait pacov how the hell are you a mod?

Yeah. Congrats on your new status pacov. You've certainly earned it.

Yeah, I couldn't play LOL for the lack of camera control and just the general amateurish feel compared to Demigod. I have faith in Valve, they rarely put out a crappy product. Maybe this will grow interest in the genre and help persuade GPG/SD to release a Demigod sequel as well. Win-win for us.

Indeed - I really wonder if GPG would revisit Demigod in DG2.  I'm certain some money was made on the game, but I'd think it would require a substantial amount of net code changes, etc, to make it successful.  I'd even think they could reuse the same engine.  I'm still holding out some hope for another DG patch as it stands, though.  Once the tourney ends, I'll probably start up another thread and compile several of the changes we'd like to see in demigod and see if brad is willing to forward those over to GPG.  And there might be the option to get some sort of impulse reactor functionality added (not holding my breath) for modding, etc.  Even if all we did was get GPG to bundle uberfix and have it installed as a default, that would be a decent win.

Anyway, I am looking forward to seeing the new game though.

Wow i was not expecting that from valve.  I will reserve judgment but it is not looking good.

Maybe someone can explain to those of us who only turn on a computer for gaming why this is such a hard thing to get done. The code is written. Would it really take more than paying a programmer a few hours to get it worked into a releaseable patch?

Because it is never that simple.

If the code is already written it will have to be integrated into the main codebase which requires, more re-writing (very unlikely to be drop-in), testng to see if it broke and for unintended consequences, and then probably more re-writing at al until it is releasable, at least in theory.

Actually it is that easy.  They just have to use the changes that were made in uberfix.  The code modifications are already done thanks to the Ptarth (and anyone who helped him).  It took months and months for them to fix the Sedna High Priests exploit and the only change required in the code was 1 number.  The location of this number was already provided by the community as well.  Yes they would still have to test it, but there are plenty of us who would be willing to do so which would cost GPG nothing for the testing.  They would just have to actually read the bug reports.

It's quite sad really, Demigod could have been one of the top games on the market.  I do appreciate that Stardock stepped up and helped.

i do like the coaching system idea, but i do think that this game will suck compared to demigod.  (at least demigod has very interesting demis, fantastic graphics, awesome music, zoom & map rotate)

Yes, the coaching system is a great idea. We all know how badly some in our community could use a little civility, even if it takes self-interest to wring this out of them.

If this is another game where you get three-four skills to level up, and they are all maxed by late game, so that the only difference between "builds" is when you max a certain skill, then yes, it will be inferior to Demigod. While DotA and LoL can boast dozens of characters, they are really just the same characters with different skins and visual effects. There is very little variation in what the abilities do, and two people playing the same character ultimately end up with exactly the same build.

I have to respectfully disagree. DotA is a little more guilty of this than League of Legends is, but a vast majority of the heroes in both games have a large majority of viable item builds.  In lower-end, non-competitive matches you might see a lot of this, especially before players figure out that they need to tailor their builds to the enemy team composition, but it usually ends there. The player that refuses to deviate and adapt his item builds during games is a player that will eventually hit a brick wall in terms of skill progression.

Master Yi in League of Legends is a good example of a hero with many viable item/rune/mastery builds. He has a number of builds that you typically see in mid-high ELO matches. Jungle builds, attack speed builds, solo mid ability power builds, tanky builds.

Got me there. I am admittedly a noob at those games. But my initial impression was exactly that, until you have played extensively, you end up playing the same thing every time. Demigod, though with some significant faults, has more variety in character play-style right from the get-go. But that's just my humble opinion. I really can't speak much about those games, so I'll stop trying to.
