I wanted to get a thread opened up for discussion on our 3rd community tournament.  I'll fill in some details later, but I'm looking for thoughts on the format, how do we make SCHEDULING work, and so on.

Quick things we know - a good chunk of the prize money from the previous tournament will be rolling over to this tourney.  We know we need to do something to fix scheduling as it didn't work all that well last tourney and led to many more dq's than were disirable.  Anyway, if you've already posted some thoughts in one of the other threads, please copy them over to this thread and add your 2 cents.

I'll update this later, but just wanted to track.  OMG_Userbanned indicated in a pm that he would like to play in this tourney and said he doesn't think he'll have any issues with availability.

Hiya Doggu, i'm avail often, you guys using Skype or vent? I'm keen for some games, 2v2 sounds cool, remember tho, im coming back to DG after about a year away, so as Pacov pointed out, there is rust. :)

Well... here's what I'm planning - we're still a phase or 2 away from getting the next tourney going.

I need to get with kira to review his website - think he and I just missed each other over the weekend.  Then, on EXTREMELY short notice, I'm going to setup and run a small, over in 1 day tournament using folks that are around.  Basic format will be 2v2 and there will be no prize and it will likely be single elimination using brackets.  We're going to see if we can make that happen.

After that, I'm planning a series of brief tournaments (over in 1 or 2 days) that will utilize some of our existing prize money... there will likely be 3 of these.  In addition, Brad mentioned that Stardock would likely be willing to sponsor some future tournaments with prizes, so I expect there will be more. 

So, my one quick suggestion would be to find 1 other person that you'd like to be on a 2 man team for the test tourney if you'd like to participate... that could happen as soon as this weekend.  Think of it as a just have fun tourney if you like.

Just to reiterate - I am quite dedicated to having a test tourney launch this weekend on either Fri/Sat/Sun.  Again, no money on the line.  Just a for fun, 2v2, single elimination tourney.  I can't lock down dates and times until Kira and I discuss things, but I'm going to try to push to have that done by Wed at the latest.  So, it will likely happen.  Find a teammate now.  Discuss.  Post here if you want or go through pm or vent.  But I want as MANY folks as will play in a short 2v2 tourney that will likely be wrapped up in 1 night.

ok quick updates - we'll be trying out kira's site for the upcoming tournament.  It has a number of features for facilitating and simplifying our tournaments and scheduling.  A few of quick features

  • Brackets
  • Easy to manage tournaments
  • Check in time (we can set a time where players have to check in before a match - they don't show and we can easily dq their teams and it looks like redo the brackets on the fly if needed)
  • Automatically randomly generated speeds
  • If we use the system a bit, it will start to compile ranking stats - so, if a team that has a lower rank beats a team with a higher rank, they'd get more points (that's not really for this tourney, but its for other things we might use)
  • It has a replay system where it is easy to upload without going to another site
  • It can track your team's stats and, if matches are scheduled, can tell you when your next match is, etc

Anyway, it has quite a few features.  Kira indicated that the site will be going live sometime tomorrow.  Anyone that wants to use the system will need to make an account and just add yourself to a clan or club I'm going to create (I'll call it something including the word DG, etc - no clan pacov :) )

So, hopefully Kira will provide some more info when the site goes live and we can get things rolling and see if you guys like it or not.  After about an hour checking out features in their staging environment, I can see a lot of potential and I think it will help quite a bit in organizing tourneys, etc. 

That said, now is the time to try to form some 2v2 teams for our little test tourney.  The tourney will take place on either Friday night or Sunday afternoon est.  And again, this is just a test tourney to try out the new system - no cash on the line, just have some fun.  I'll be coming up with the rules for the 2v2 tourney and we'll keep it relatively simple.

So, start recruiting now and if the launch of kira's site goes well, we can make an official start date for the tourney.

Yes I would however I assume the same problems would arise that I had last time round - generally lag for EU ppl, and time of day for US ppl. And most of the time a combination of the two.

 

I just wanted to check it out.
