Please Help!! Building a Computer

Power Supply Problem?

Hey Everyone, 

 

First of all, I apologize for not being as lively around here. I still check in to see what's going on, I just haven't had the time to be as active in the community.

Anyway, I recently built a computer and it just died on me! It shut down randomly a few times, and now I can't get it to start at all. The event log said the computer lost power unexpectedly (no stop code error). I figured maybe it was just a fluke with my new power supply, or maybe I have something plugged into the motherboard wrong.

 

Here's the specs:

 

Intel i7 2600 3.4Ghz processor

16 gb Corsair 1600 Mhz DDR3 RAM

ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe LGA 1155 Motherboard

EVGA Superclocked GeForce GTX 570 1280MB 320-bit GDDR5 Graphics Card

Corsair GS800 800W Power Supply - LINK

And a hard drive, dvd drive, all that other crap. 

 

So when I plug the Power Supply in, some lights on the motherboard turn on, but the fan in the PS doesn't run or anything like that. 

 

Any ideas on what I may have done wrong? Or what I might be able to do? 

Or is my Power Supply a piece of junk and I should return it for a better one?  :'(

 

I really appreciate any help I can get from you guys. This is my first time building a REAL computer - and I'm kinda bummed that it only lasted a week haha.

is that memory Vengeance, XMS, or Dominator? Vengenace was designed to be used with sandy bridge procs. is the memory voltage set at 1.5? regarding the psu, i would've gotten the HX850. actually, i have one.  the AX850 is pretty strong, too. i usually put corsair or seasonic psu's in rigs i build for folks and if yours has died, it'll be the first corsair psu i've heard of being bad. anything is possible, though. the easiest thing to do is borrow a psu from a friend or computer shop and see if your rig works with a different psu. if your 800GS is bad and you can afford it, i strongly suggest returning it for an AX850 or HX850.

on another note, do you have the 8-pin connector plugged in to the mobo? have you tried the memory 'reset' button located next to the memory slots?

Hey Cavan, thanks for the reply - from what I know, 1600 DDR3 RAM is compatible with my processor as long as it's still dual channel and not triple channel.

Yes, corsair Vengeance. I'm not sure how to set the voltage to 1.5......is it set in the BIOS? or...?

I figured the GS800 PS was good enough because the Newegg power supply calculator said I only need a 650 (at minimum). I'm pretty sure the power supply is the problem, I'm not sure if this is proper diagnostics - but I disconnected the power supply from everything and plugged it into a wall socket, and it doesn't do anything. 

The fan in the PS has an LED bulb that I think should turn on when it's plugged into the wall - but maybe I'm wrong and the power supply can only operate when connected to the case/motherboard.

I wish I knew someone I could borrow a PSU from......hmph. Well, I guess I'll just take this power supply back to micro center tomorrow and see what they say. 

 

Oh, and yes the 8 pin connecter is plugged in - and no I haven't tried the memory reset button (I didn't know that existed.....) but I did however, re-seat the memory sticks - if that makes a difference. (I figured that would reset them, but I don't know, I'm such a n00b.

 

If micro center detects that my psu is bad, maybe I'll get a refund and pick up a HX850 - that's not much more money.

yeah, you change the ram voltage in the bios. your mobo doesn't have the standard bios, tho. it has the uefi. the easiest thing to do is set your ram to run at the xmp settings. you'll need to go into the 'advanced' settings area to do so.

based on what you've said, i agree your psu is dead. did you buy everything at micro-center? do they have a service area? it wouldn't hurt to take the rig in for them to check.

you'll like the HX850, i promise.

Yeah micro center has a service center, and they are very helpful. And yes, I bought most of the parts there - everything but the RAM, dvd drive, HDD, case, and monitor.

 

OH! And I just noticed the HX850 is modular? Awesome, that will make things much more organized.  :D
