I think I know what causes the slowdowns mid/late game

Well, I used a program called drivercleaner to get rid of ATI and NVidia driver reference when I installed CAT 3.5

I had to reinstall many programs including Gal Civ. Well, this time I just did all the updates through stardock and for the first time ever I'm getting those really long waits (and this is in a tiny universe). What differed this time was not doing the manual install of the bonuspack. I'll try a re-install later and see if the long waits clear up.

Thanx for the info JP.

Strangely I have had an opposite effect. My system would have the slow downs mid game after installing the BPack manually. I had to reinstall GC after upgrading to 1.05 via the build 15 startdock which screwed up everything. Since updating everying via the new version of stardock all is ok. I also changed my motherboard and processor at the weekend (from Ath 900 to Ath 2400+), and on gigantic all has been fine so I may not notice anything.

So the only conclusion I can draw currently is that a complete reinstall is necessary for anyone with this problem.

In addition, My previous slowdowns which started approx mid game always got gradually worse over time even if there was only one AI left, no battles and fewer ships to manage. At one point I thought it could be something to do with total constructors/ ships ever built which even when killed/added to starbases are still somehow using cpu.... but I doubt it.

One last thing: Has anyone who has had this problem sent a save game to support and had any feedback? I would love to know what was said :)

My first post may not have been too clear. Basically I had to re-install many programs because using drivercleaner messed up my sound.

Gal civ happened to be one of the programs I had to re-install, and in bitter irony just last week I'd been stating I'd never had a slowdown ever in Galc Civ even in a Gigantic Uni with all AI. Now that I did a re-install of the game (and all updates from Stardock Central), I'm getting terribly long pauses mid-game in just a tiny Universe.

I just tested my theory and it didn't help.

There's definately a problem with the latest beta.

So are you saying that it may be an issue with the sound?

I have had a similar problem with WinXP SP1. When I run GalCiv for the first time since boot-up, rundll.exe is started and consumes %99 of the CPU. I use the task manager to kill the rundll.exe process and GalCiv returns to normal speed.

No Cari, not a sound issue with Gal Civ - Drivercleaner messed up directshow (and sound), so I decided to reinstall several programs after restoring. Galc Civ happened to be one I unsinstalled and reinstalled.
