So I've Started On a New Build

So I've Started On a New Build

that's not only sexy but kicks major ass

Yup, it's that time of year again, but this time it's not a PC upgrade but rather a complete new build... starting with a real sexy case...

Now this is a full tower and has oodles of room inside for lots of fantastic shit... accommodating extra big graphics cards, enormous CPU coolers and even a magical leprechaun who can fix stuff when it's broken.  Orright, maybe not the leprechaun, but it is fechin' huge inside.  And what's more, to make it even more fancy, it has keys to get into it... so nobody's stealing my graphics card in a hurry... the innards of the beasty are quite secure.

Orright, so maybe it's not that secure, but there are lots of things to like about this case. For example, the 'hot swap' hard drive bays and the 'daisy chained' power connecters so that only one SATA plug from the PSU is required. Then there's the great ventilation, easy access to everything and the sexiest appearance ever.

Anyhow, enough of all that, let's talk about the innards...

PSU....   Silverstone 1200w 80 Gold

Mobo.... Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD5H [has 10 SATA 3 ports and 10 USB3 ports]

CPU....   Intel i7 4770K @ 3.5ghz [but highly overclockable]

Cooler... Corsair H60 Liquid CPU Cooler.

RAM...   G-Skill Trident DDR3 2400mhz x 32GB

SSD...    Samsung 840 Evo series 512Gb

GPU...    Gigabyte Radeon 7970 GV-R797WF3- 3GD.

Well that's all I got in it for now, but it has been a long, hard day and I've had enough, it's bedtime and the rest will have to wait 'til tomorrow.

Looks like a KILLER build. I'm sure you have it all scoped out but for anyone interested there is a site called PCPartPicker where you build your Rig on site and it lists if the parts you want are compatible, how much power you'll need and gives total cost of rig and where you can get the parts for the cheapest price.

http://pcpartpicker.com/   Would love to see pictures of the finished product.

I am also thinking about doing a build. I want to make my own case out of wood. I kind of like this

Falzone's cases are cool but would take more time and skill than I have. Good luck

Thanks but its not that hard for me. I have been a woodworker for 25 years so I have learnt a thing or two. I will keep it somewhat simple though and I think this old radio is the design I will go with. The rollup door will be a cool idea for getting into the guts.

I think I might have upset Starkers to the point he will not come back. Or he is sleeping. Hope he is OK.

The HW is fine, but the case is anything but sexy.

Swap that shit for something from Fractal Design, Antec or Lian Li.

Oh well, can't please everyone.

As for Shit... that's my opinion of Antec and Fractal design... they're positively crap.

Shoot, I just voiced an opinion not everyone will agree with.... hmm, seems there's a lot of that going about, lately

I've built many before, just don't have the time or desire to go through all of what you described.

Who knows though.

I can't speak for the desire, but if you have all the parts ready on hand, a well put together, tidy build can be done in under 2 hours.  So time shouldn't /needn't be an issue... even if it's done in 2 or 3 stages to better manage limited free time.

At the end of the day, though, it's the product you most would like to own.  If that's the all-too-easy off the shelf and impersonal rig, then you're selling yourself short IMHO.

Then there's the pride and satisfaction of having built something more spectacular... that sense of achievement. |-)

Quoting starkers, reply 22To say I'm frugle

Sounds like something you blow.....with a lisp....

'frugal' is the word you're looking for...

I knew that! :-"

At the time I was very much sleep deprived [still haven't been to sleep] and I was going cross-eyed.,..hence the keyboard cock-up resulting in letters being out of sequence or just missing.

And like John Laws... that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Will do, but I'm due for about 18 hours sleep before I do another thing... have been up 2 days now... finding it difficult to focus/concentrate

I would not justify my purchase to anyone!

Way cool set-up

Love that case, looks like a b-tch to clean though, guess compressed air?

When my lights dim, I will know you have powered up!

AMD, Intel, yada yada, fast is fast, all that matters, so if it is fast , good as any.

Still AMD here,{AMDFX8 Black Edition4.3gig}, only because I7 was not in budget at the time.

Good build ya got started.

My thoughts too....

Last 2 builds have been with Lian Li cases....and I strongly suspect the next one will too...;)

What is the issue with FD or Antec - i guess they are not fugly enough?  :)

Anyway, I meant it good with you - if you insist on going with this case, your choice, go ahead. You are going to have that monstrosity on/under your desk for next few years, not me.

Hi starkers

Nice build, some pics would be great. You did the research and assembled your components based on needs, budget and personal taste, as it should be.

Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one, how you express your opinion defines the type of person you are, and when you put yourself out there on the internet, your going to attract all kinds of opinions, very few of them based on working knowledge.

...  As I said earlier, the power connectors for this are daisy-chained on a bracket, and in using this principle I have done a similar thing with the SATA cables, which looks really neat, even if I do say so myself. ...

Your niece came over to check on how well you braided all those cable inside the PC tower, yes?  Go ahead, admit it.  You wanted to show off you new uber PC! :) Congrats on the new rig!

Wow nice pc and sexy case!

I will admit I did lose my 760 watt PS for 1200 PS (I wished Corisar made a 1000 watt for my family of PS but they don't so I went with the 1200). I was able to sell it on amazon so that was nice that worked out so quickly. Damn you Jafo you were right. Adding the 2nd monitor and other device that plugged into my compy I noticed slow downs and when I turned my PS to max settings I got freezes so ya.   :-"

Now if only SSD can become cheaper cause I want a 2gb for cheap... Ya I know its gonna be awhile and I'm being a stubborn piece of shit. O:)

No, actually, it is going to be quite easy to keep clean.  While admittedly some dust will inevitably get inside, all the ventilation points have easily removable dust filters... just slide 'em out, wash 'em and put 'em back again.  As for what dust that does find its way inside, well the left side panel is hinged, thus allowing easy access with a can of compressed air, or this handy little blower tool I picked up in a cheapie shop for a buck

Nah, can't see how it could be any easier.  The PC will not be going in a tower recess or anything, so it will be completely accessible from the front and both sides... and a turn to the left or right provides access to the rear.  Simple!

Yeah, I know you're not too fond of Thermaltake, but I've had great service/use from their cases and this 'll be no exception, given the unique features it comes with.  I'd never ever seen a case with hot swappable drive bays, whereby at the push of a button the old one comes out and the new goes in... no cable swapping or anything, just pops right in.  So yeah, given the number of drives I have for this and that, that was its selling point.  There were other cases that I'd considered, but none included all of the desired features this one has, so it got the nod.

Hehe, about Antec and Fractal Design... not on my watch; however, there is a Corsair case that might just be the thing for a future project I have in mind... only $89.00 but will be some way down the track after the expense of this current build. It's cube shaped and would do nicely to replace my XP gaming tower, which is too tall to fit on the shelf I have in my TV unit... it'd fit there perfectly

Although looks are important, that was not the selling point of this case.  For me it was the unique features... hot swappable drives; lockable case; a carry handle.... features not present in Antec or FD cases I've seen.

As for the Thermaltake Level 10 Full Tower being a monstrosity... er, ugly... most people here have commented positively regarding its appearance and have said how nice/sexy it is.  So it would seem you're the minority of one/the odd man out, and maybe it's not a tinge of dislike but rather a tinge of jealousy.  Hehe!  I mean, if you had this case and I didn't, I'd be green with envy, too.

:-" ;P

Thanks Ernie.   Yeah, I researched everything before I thought about buying, and then I the compared prices of the parts I wanted on a site called shopbot.com.au.  From there I was able to assess the best buys and formulate a tentative budget to work with.  Luckily, all that I wanted was available at very competitive prices at the online store I already did business with, and being they're locally situated I was able to go pick up some of the parts myself... thankfully, my daughter now lives locally and she drives me around for such things and shopping, etc

No, my niece came over because she was moving in downstairs... my old man cave... and I dropped everything to help her get set up, etc... was still at it gone 3.30 am, by which time the opportunity to sleep had long passed me by.... insomnia had kicked in, and showing off my 'uber' PC was the last thing on anyone's mind.

Yes, various manufacturers have cases with external hot swap docking bays, and yes, there are cases with hot swappable internal drive bays once you've opened the case; however, I've not seen any apart from Thermaltake's that has internal drive bays which can be hot swapped at just the push of a button.... no need to open the case, they pop out the left side.  That is the unique feature I wanted.

Vantec EZ Swap 4 SATA hotswap...fits standard 5.25...lockable...variable fan speed and temp monitor ...trayless ....just push the drive in....groovy lcd display to 'trick your rig'....got those on mine now...and the next one will too.....with or without hotswap racks inside the pop-off sidepanel....;)
