Mail Checking Software for Windows 7

I am looking for software that will regularly monitor the major mail types – POP3, IMAP and the webmail services (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail).  I’d like the program to sit in the tray and notify me when mail appears.  I also would like to preview mail before I download it and have the option to delete it.   The viewer needs to display safely both plain text and HTML.

I used a program called Mailwasher Pro for many years.  It worked wonderfully.  Unfortunately the publisher (Firetrust) changed its licensing arrangement to a model that I prefer not to support. I switched to a program called MailBell (Emtec) which I am currently using.  One of my regular mailings now arrives in HTML and MailBell only previews plain text.  The MailBell author has no interest in adding a HTML preview option.   Something like MailBell with a HTML viewer would be great.

I’ve searched and trialed a few things (e.g. Multi Email Notifier, SpamCC and POP Peeper) but have yet to find something that I am ready to switch to.  I’m hoping someone may have a software suggestion they're using that would help guide me.  It doesn’t have to be freeware.  I prefer a onetime pay license and not an annual subscription.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Try PopTray 3.2. Works on 7, or 8/8,1. It's older software, but works just fine and does multiple email accounts.

Thanks Guys.  Truly appreciate the suggestions.

Emailtray is a little more than I need.  Besides it has some contorted registration process one has to go through just to install a demo. Not what an old stubborn guy like me will do even for free software.  I'd rather pay instead!

Tom - are you using PopTray?  It's ten years old.  I'm confident it will work with POP3 mail, but the webmail services have changed a lot the last ten years and for it to work with webmail it relies on old plugins.   I'm doubtful that the webmail services will still work.  I'll try it if you're using it successfully.

One piece of software I am carefully keeping my eye on is e-Prompter.  I used that for awhile before Mailwasher.  It was excellent but it stopped working with the webmail services.   The webmail folks do a good job with security and spam blocking but that creates all kinds of problems for mail checkers if they'e not actively kept up-to-date.  e-Prompter needed a complete overhaul and it's been out of service for several years while that work was underway.  They're just about ready to release a new version. All the work was done by volunteers - at least that's the way it was portrayed.  Volunteers are awesome people but one can't rush them.  I hope they charge for this version and keep someone on staff to keep it up-to-date.

Yep, been using it for many years, but only with POP3 accounts.

There's been enough views on this thread that maybe one or two of you may be following the responses due to a similar interest.

I made the switch this weekend to Pop Peeper.  There is a new version, version 4.0.1 that I fully recommend over version 3.8.1.  Version 4.0.1 was released earlier this year.  Version 3.8.1 dates back to 2011.  3.8.1 was a little quirky on my setup.   4.0.1 works perfectly.  I am able to preview mail from all the mail services I use and I can quickly and easily delete unwanted mail.  One can set up notification both visually or with sound.  What's important is the publisher is actively keeping the web-mail services working.  That's a big, but essential job.

I plan to use Pop Peeper for awhile and if it continues to meet my need send in a donation.  The free version is all I need, but tools like this that are used every day need to be supported.

Thanks again to those who made suggestions.
