Who said Metallica HAS to sound like anything? My whole point was that THEY ARE PLAYING WHAT THEY WANT to play because as a band they have that right. They do not have to perform metal to anyones standanrds.

Actually, as a commercial enterprise doing business as rock/metal/garbage musicians, they DO have to perform to someones standards. They're livelihood depends on millions of people buying their music and tickets to their shows.

I run 3 retail stores. I can do it in a any number of ways that I choose. But...if I'd like to be successful and make a good livelihood doing it, I need to do it in a way that pleases my customers.

Not really true. They can play what they want but there is consequenses, like losing fans. If I was in a band as big as metallica, I would play what I want. The hell with the Standards....

davad70 makes a good point, but kona is right about Metallica. Metallica has already made their millions, therefor they can produce whatever music they want without worrying about starving.

Zeppelin, yeah, they paved the way for modern metal, and AC/DC to some extent, but those other two are as metal as Shania Twain.

Neither Zeppelin or AC/DC can be put in the "heavy metal" group.  They may have led up to it with their "hard rock", though.

Now compare those to: RobZombie/White Zombie, MegaDeth, Iron Maiden, Anthrax....... I will say that Kiss planted some serious metal roots...

But, back on topic with Metallica, (I think that i said this before) they definitely are not as "heavy" as they used to be.  They have wimped out over the years (they should have never cut their hair ).  However, they sound a lot better now than they did on Load and reload (though fuel for fire wasn't too bad until it got so over played that I hated it.)  I'm just babbling now.....

I personally like the "raw" sound of this album.  It reminds me of the way their original albums sounded.  I'm really tired of all the post production crap you here all the time.  you go to a concert and the songs can't possibly sound like what they do on an album.

Yeah but c'mon, I said the same thing about the raw sound. And yes, you CAN have that live sound. I have a sound system imporver/sonic maximizer, custom built EQ and other equipment to shape my sound in which the music sounds like it's live and sounds like its SUPPOSED to sound. If you closed your eyes and listened to say a heavy metal album on my system, you would swear it was being played live and you would open your eyes to make sure.

I can go into how music from whatever source can sound muddy by proper order being lost with say higher frequencies being delayed and the sound being reproduced differs significantly from the sound produced from the original source. Envelope distortion. A sound system improver works to correct this while providing cleaner, more intelligent and detailed highs with deeper and fuller bass while proving a fuller, more natural and all around better sound.


The production pretty much does suck but that doesn't necessarily mean that will prohibit me from listening to it. I'm even feelin what they say they were tryin to go for.

What does hair length or any other attribute of physical appearance have to do with the sound of the music? Longer hair does not equal better sound. It has no effect on the musicians' ability to sing and play their instruments.

It does. It's a mystical cosmic force that means longer haired musicians are better.
Although mick hucknall is the exception to this rule......

Lars uses more triggers on his kit then the US Army.It must take years to rodie his stuff...I think the best drum sound crybaby rock star Lars ever caught was during And Justice For All and Master Of Puppets recordings.Yes I still listen to those older recordings.

I have to say this....

1. I agree with Karma-- "They never should have cut their hair" Doesn't change the sound, but can look yummy (actually the lead singer in reality looks better with the short)

2. I also agree with Karma when she said in many many posts ago, that the lead singer seems to have less of a growl to his voice in this one.

In answer to the opinion that I gave, it was just my opinion. It wasn't meant to be everyone's opinion. Sheesh. Very interesting ploy to discredit my opinion by saying that I am trying to force everyone to accept my opinion or that my opinion is the only valid opinion. This is ridiculous. There are many bands that I like and others that I don't like. But, just because I don't like Metallica, doesn't mean that no one who likes Metallica are terrible judges of music. But, my opinion would be that they are. But, again that is just my opinion. Understand?

I agree with the Black Sabbath comment. My only question is what is Heavy Metal? Where can we draw the lines? Aerosmith? Ted Nugent? I think there are too many labels for rock music. Heavy Metal, Glamour Rock, Pop Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Hard Rock, its basically all the same. It's Rock n' Roll. And Metallica just sucks in this type of music. They can't compare. My opinion. Give me Liberty(Journey,Aerosmith,Led Zeppelin,Black Sabbath) or give me Metallica(Death) lol. Metallica just can't compare. Who would you rather see? A Ted Nugent concert, a old AC/DC concert, a Rolling Stones concert, a old Led Zeppelin concert, or a Metallica Concert? No comparison.

CognitoToo, you are right, Journey,Aerosmith,and Led Zeppelin don't compare to Metallica....that's because they are not the same type of music.  Black Sabath/Ozzy are sometimes loosely considered heavy metal, but that is a matter of opinion.  It's just silly to compare a band like Journey (which is considered light rock) to a band like Metallica.  And, while we are comparing things, we should compare bands that have new albums out with Metallica's album. 

A Ted Nugent concert, a old AC/DC concert, a Rolling Stones concert, a old Led Zeppelin concert, or a Metallica Concert? No comparison.

Who out of that list can you actually go see in concert besides Metallica?  You can see Rolling Stones, if you don't mind the fact that you have to pay a bazillion dollars to see them and you won't be able to understand anything they say or sing (and, it's all old material) Or, you could see a washed up Ted Nugent singing old stuff so that he can make more money to go on his elaborate hunting sprees (which just out of principle I would never go to his concert for that reason).  Who out of those bands are promoting their new music in concert?  BTW, I went to a Metallica concert when their black album came out.  It was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

Oh, and btw, this is what is considered "debating".  You give a reason why you don't like something, then I pick it apart to show why I don't agree........
