New Serial-ATA Drive

I've just bought myself a new 120Gb Maxtor Serial-ATA hard drive, because my current 30Gb Maxtor ATA100 one seems to be dying. Hopefully I'll be able to back everything up before it breathes its last and be back to skinning soon. In the meantime, the updates to metalX2 and dinksDX are on hold until I have a reliable system to work on.

Not too sure what I'm going to do with all that space though...

And how much did the new drive cost?

£98.50 from http://www.dabs.com .

Not a bad price really when you consider that my current one cost me over £250 when I originally bought it.

SATA does live up to the hype, you will definately notice a speed increase so long as your motherboard supports it. It's the closest thing to having a SCSI without actually having a SCSI. Now if only my mobo supported it!

mine does. It better I just bought it.

I have the Abit NFS-7 Motherboard, which does indeed support SATA. Hopefully this one will last me a good few years too. The hard drive is the only original part left from my first self-built PC, so it's had a good innings.

Well first impressions aren't great. The drive arrived without any of the retail packaging, documentation or cables, despite there being no mention on the retailer's site of it being an OEM item.

Luckily I have a spare SATA cable, and the power connector is a standard one, but I'm a bit concerned that I don't have any reference for the jumper settings, or for one large connector the function of which I have no clue about!

GrayHaze,

No jumper settings needed. All SATA drives act as Master, thus only one connection per cable. SATA is sweet; I know you will be pleased. I have 2 200GB SATA drives, and 2 IDEs.

Have Fun,
ce

Well it's installed and seems to be running well. I'm less than happy with the customer service (if that's what you could call arguing with a customer) given by dabs.com as a result of my being provided with no documentation. I certainly wouldn't recommend them to anyone else, and I think I'd gladly pay the little bit extra other retailers were asking just to receive some good customer service.

Grrrrrrr... >
