The shows you watched in 2020

So the other topic about Dark reminded me i used to have topic on shows i watched in 2015/16/17

here -> https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/474547/page/1/#replies

and i watched quite a lot of stuff in 2020, especially, given pandemic and whatnot, i thought i could continue where i left off and make new 2020 related topic. So here we go, in 2020 i watched:

Star Trek Discovery S3: utter garbage

Picard S1: unfortunately as bad as Disco, wanted to like it so much, but it was terrible

Star Trek Lower Decks S1: only acceptable NewTrek show, fairly OK, even if more of a sitcom set in Trek universe, than proper Trek show. Still the only decent of the lot.

Messiah S1: modern day drama/thriller about guy claiming to be new Jesus

LaMante: french criminal series, about female serial killer, quite decent

Outsider: Stephen King stuff, very good, especially the initial few episodes

Stranger: british crimi/thriller

Sinner S1,2,3: US crimi/thriller with Bill Pullman, the first season very good IMO, the later 2 not as much, but still watchable

Lost in Space S2: might have watched it in 2019 though, not sure now

Paranoid: british crimi/thriller

Ozark S1,2,3: US crimi/thriller/drama, sort of Breaking Bad, very good, recommended

Broadchurch S1,2,3: british crimi/drama, very good, recommended

Curon: italian mystery, not that great

Snowpiercer S1: scifi, based on the same name movie, great, recommended

Perry Mason: modern remake of classic crimi, decent

What we do in shadows: sitcom about vampires, really good, recommended

Peaky Blinders S1-5: british historical crimi/drama about 1920 gangsters, really good, recommended

Alienist S2: US crimi, quite good, but first season was better

Glitch S1-3: Australian mystery about dead people coming back, decent

Umbrella Academy S1,2: comic based action/scifi, not into comics, but really liked this one, recommended

SpaceForce: US sitcom about space program, fun at times, but saw better sitcoms

Haunting of Bly Manor: mystery/ghosts stuff, fairly OK, not too scary, different compared to first season, Haunting of the Hill House

Threshold: older scifi classic from cca 2005, rewatched after maybe 10 years

Outlander S1: historic with scifi elements, did not quite like it to watch more, but might return to it

Into the Night: post-apocalyptic scifi

I am not okay with this: comic-like, sit-com

Requiem: british mystery/crimi, decent

The Investigator: British Crime Story S1: documentary

100: US/canadian post-apocalyptic scifi, currently watching S6, surprisingly very good

Mandalorian S2: was okay, probably better than Treks, but bit too simplistic. Not a match compared to likes of Expanse.

Ash vs Evid Dead S1-3: horror sitcom, over the top gory and fun

Lovecraft´s Country: rather disappointing

Raised by the Wolves: scifi, bit of a mix bag

Bored to Death S1-3: great sitcom

To the lake: Russian show about deadly viral pandemic, fairly actual. Surprisingly good.

Liberator: WW2 military show, similar to Band of Brothers, in weird stylized visuals. I generally dont like these kind of shows, as they are mostly all about relaying the atmosphere, but light on story, but this one was okay i guess.

Dark S3: final season of german time-travelling show. Went over the top with it and became overly complex and super-difficult to follow, so it was disappointing, especially after flawless first season, but overall, its worth to watch.

Dirk Gently´s Holistic Detective Agency S1: loosely based on Douglas Adams novels. Not bad, but could be better.

Aside of these, i watched few episodes of Narcos: Mexico, Blacklist, Paranormal, Toast of London and Tin Star, but have not finished watching yet, for various reasons.

So, thats it. Anyone saw any of these and cares to comment? Or suggest something else you watched and thought it was good/worth a watch? I am all ears :-)

EDIT: Forgot one more show, so added it.

Yes, i felt almost bad, when i put it together and realized its like 40 shows :O  Proper no-life. :(O

Of your list, I have watched:

ST Disco: I agree it's embarrassing that they called it Star Trek. Same with:

ST Picard: They thought if they put in enough cameos, we would forgive the poor writing. WRONG

Messiah S1: It was interesting and weird....which I like!

Sinner S1,2,3: I loved Bill Pullman in this role he seemed very genuine and human. It's kinda an unique show in that you know the whodunit right away. It's the WHY that the show is focused on.

Peaky Blinders S1-5: Good character development throughout the seasons. Violent AF, though.

Umbrella Academy S1,2: Quirky and flawed anti heroes that kept me entertained. Ellen Page is the weakest part of the show IMO. I'm not sure it was her or the writing. I just didn't care for her/her character in the show.

Into the Night: The premise in a sense reminded me of Stephan King's The Langoliers (The miniseries adapted from the short story is hilariously bad, though)

I am not okay with this: Another quirky show. Looking forward to more!

Raised by Wolves: Very unique and strange. Like it!

Dark: It's my fave! Wrote a whole damn thread about it: LINK

Other than that:

Sex Education: IMDB LINK Gillian Anderson's character is a sex therapist while her virgin son take on a similar role at his school. Good balance of humor and cringe.

The Fall S1-S3: IMDB LINK Another Gillian Anderson series where she's British! Murder thriller. Kept me on the edge!

Broen (the bridge) S1-S4: IMDB LINK Swedish/Danish murder drama. There is a British version of this called The tunnel where they tried the same idea only it was centered around the tunnel between England and France, but it seemed flat to me after seeing the original. Also I do believe they tried the same concept in the US but this time it was the US/Mexico boarder. I'll keep to the original, thanks.

La Casa de Papel (Mony Heist) S1: IMDB LINK Spanish thriller centered around a bank heist! Well crafted story that kept me guessing until the end. Season 2 was weaker and didn't hold my interest so I stopped watching, but S1 was fantastic!

3% S1 and 2: IMDB LINK Dystopian future series from Brazil. Loved Season one....it was excellent! Season 2 less so.... Never got to 3 and 4.

Sorjonen (Boardertown): IMDB LINK Finnish crime drama which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The Witcher: IMDB LINK It's maybe not the best fantasy adaptation out there but I liked it.

Mindhunter: IMDB LINK Series from David Fincher based on true events and follows the early days of the FBI’s criminal profiling unit in the late 1970s.

Westworld: IMDB LINK Season 1 and 3 are good. You'll have to suffer through season 2, though!

His Dark Materials: IMDB LINK The crappy Golden Compass pales in comparison to this adaptation of Philip Pullman's book trilogy. It's also going to be only 3 seasons rather than dragging it out to maximize profit!

There are more, but these are the few I can think of offhand

Of those in your list I watched the Aussie show, Glitch.  Others were The 100 season 7 and Outlander season 5.  As for the rest, I either didn't bother or was preoccupied with other things.  To be honest, I've watched very little TV since Game of Thrones ended.... and decent shows on our regular free-to-air here in Australia have been sparse.

Thing is, our free-to-air channels have free streaming channels that show a lot of those shows listed and more, so I could catch up with them if I want to when I'm not so preoccupied.

You are man of culture i see, watching almost as much stuff as i do :-)

Regarding those other shows you listed:

Sex Therapist: will look into it. Never heard of it before. Not high on Gillian Anderson, since Hannibal, since her voice annoys me, sound like she smoked 300 cigarettes a day :-)

The Fall: on my list to watch in future, i had it recommended in the past alongside Broadchurch and few others, Broadchurch i watched, this one might be next

The Bridge: i saw the US version - that one was good, as you correctly assume, its set in El Paso/Ciudad Juarez. Did not know there was British one as well. Would be interesting to know how they compare. BTW, The Killing, which was another US one remake of Scandinavian original, was one of the best shows, criminal ones at least, i ever saw.

Money Heist: watched S1 and S2 in 2019, was quite good, especially the first season, did not feel like watching S3 yet.

3%: saw its on Netflix, havent seen yet, the description kind of put me off, but the same happened with 100, until i actually watched it, so this might be the same case

Bordertown: havent watched yet, but bookmarked on Netflix

The Witcher S1: watched on Christmas 2019, was rather average i thought. Never read the books, perhaps it was good adaptation. Will watch S2 though.

Mindhunter: saw both seasons, it was quite good. Too bad it was canned. Not really a reason why i watched it, but i could look at Anna Torv all day long. And..."I dont like Mondays!" :-)

Westworld: saw S1, and first episode of S2, did not bother to watch more. I did not liked the S1 in the first place that much, i hated the way it was structured that you have been shown several timelines without being explicitly told so. It was all chaotic and not pleasurable experience to me. I dont mind shows, which are more complex and could be somewhat difficult to follow, i liked first 2 seasons of DARK, i liked Castle Rock...but feck Westworld.

His Dark Materials: only watched first episode with my brother, he did not want to watch more, so we did not. Might still give it a chance by myself, though. It was rather bizzare, i mean the whole setting. We ended up watching Watchmen instead of it later, which was bizzare as well, in similar way - even if the shows are different. Anyway, its like creators of both shows tried to their hardest to be as original as it could, but the result was just weirdness.

Right now, i started to watch Better Call Saul. BB was great, this looks to be as well, so far so good. Oh, and Equinox, danish mystery show... 2 episodes in.

One I forgot to mention was

Beforeigners: INDB LINK One of the few Norwegian series that I have enjoyed (sorry, our Swedish and Danish siblings just do it better generally).

The premise is that people from different time periods start popping up in the oceans in modern times. The people are from the stone age, Viking age, Victorian age and the 50's. Flash forward several years and Norwegian society has somewhat adjusted to the new arrivals and we meet our 2 main characters. Lars, a somewhat pathetic and down on his luck police officer is being partnered up with the first newcomer to serve in the force, Alfhildr from the Viking age. These 2 wildly different characters are forced to work together in order to solve the murder of a newcomer.

The series to me is a clever social statement concerning immigration and integration. They're addressing the issues and problems that culture differences may bring to light and how people deal with it all.

Saw it, in 2019. It was decent, although i felt i have seen better shows. Anyway, waiting for second season.

Meanwhile, i finished watching Equinox - it was bit of a slow burn, with i suppose, sort of unclear, ambivalent ending (which might not be a bad thing) - wondering if its meant to have another season or thats it.

And i finished first season of Better Call Saul - its truly good show. But i suppose, it was to be expected.

Pondering, what to watch instead of Equinox now - whether to finish Tin Star first season, continue watching Blacklist hoping for it to get better or try Bordertown.

Yeah, our public broadcaster, the ABC [Australian Broadcasting Commission], produces some very watchable TV series.... and all without ads, I might add [pun intended].

Another that may interest you is Cleverman... and another: The Unlisted.  Both have elements of sci-fi and fantasy.  I'm not sure who produced it but Conspiracy 365 is a thriller that keeps you guessing right through to the end.

There's also Mystery Road, a crime series that's not to shabby, either.  There's others worthy of viewing but I need to get back to bed.  My dog got me up a 515.am to let him out to pee.  He's good like that, won't pee or poo inside, though I'd rather he didn't get me up at the crack of dawn to do it.  It's now 6.30.am and I need a couple of hours more sleep as I didn't get to sleep until 2.30.am.  However, when I think of anything else watchable I'll post it here.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into them, see if any of them is on Netflix or HBO.

Yeah, I started watching it but got distracted.  Sadly, I no longer have Foxtel [the pay TV provider who commissioned it] to continue watching it.  I won't renew Foxtel TV but it may yet appear on 7 Plus, a free to air streaming service that shows content from various sources.

Something else that I finished watching was The 100's final season, luckily I recorded it for future viewing when I still had Foxtel.  Another show I really got into is The Expanse... again, recorded for future viewing, but now there's a new season I'll somehow have to find... hopefully 7 Plus or on of other streaming channels end up showing it.

I watched a couple of episodes of the first season and didn't mind it, but alas, I no longer have access to it.  Apparently it is now into season 3.

The Brokenwood Mysteries

Yeah, that's a Kiwi series I quite like.  I'm not sure which season is currently showing but I did enjoy the first one and would like to catch up on all that I've not seen as yet.  Another Kiwi series I got into was Top Of The Lake, a police, crime series with a few twists and turns.

Another NZ series I really got into was The Almighty Johnsons, which was about a family of born and bred Kiwis who underneath it all were actual Norse gods mingled with their daily lives.  I don't know if it is still accessible but I do recommend it.

Also check out Top Of The Lake and The Almighty Johnsons, both are great Kiwi shows, the latter often times being rather comedic.
