How do I research Hulls for new ships! (newbie)

I'm returning to this game after years away. I googled this but can't figure out how to build a combat ship. I just started and can't figure out what maybe I need to research. Any idea? Thank you : )

You basically just need to research some weapons (the red ones) and small or medium hulls.

Some on-type defenses to fill the remaining space.

If you dont know how to use the ship designer just toggle "auto design ships for the player" in options and there you go

Thank you. I don't see where to research Hulls. I seem to already have "auto design ships for the player" enabled in options..  Researching Interstellar Warfare alone didn't open any ship designs yet..

in Twilight you could also stuff hitpoint-mods on Cargo Hulls to turn them into warships, but they'll be more expensive to do them this way

I have the Ultimate edition of GalCiv2 so it must include Twilight of the Arnor. Interesting idea
