FE LH BUGS which kill game immersion, bugs still around 11 years after game launch in May 2013

1) cannot select a hero (champion) and then pick the spell for them to cast on the world map, instead you cast the spell with the knowledge of which heroes have learned the spell

in the case of cloudwalk spell only 2 or 3 choices are given in the pick list even if more then 3 heroes know the spell. this means for my current game I can only teleport armies one or two since the heroes which know the spell in armies three or four are NEVER on the spell caster pick list. maybe they finally appear if both armies one and two have ported??

in the case of summon creature spells (ice ele, air ele, crag spawn, earth ele, grave ele, etc) there is a mysterious choice of which hero that knows the spell and does not have this summoned unit on the map currently is picked first to cast the spell. in some cases this hero must be separated from its full stack to form a new army (stack) before the summon creature spell will work

2) foe casts dogs of war spell (usually on its first turn) but my next unit cannot take an action. hitting fast forward does not resolve the issue. the unit still fails to be to take an action. the only workaround is auto combat. not desirable since your army suffers HP or unit losses it would not have suffered if you had been able to manually fight the tactical combat as you intended when you started combat

I did install a mod that uses dogs of war but have since moved the added files out of my mod folder. I used steam to verify game files. sometimes a file needs to be restored. but upon game reboot this bug still occurs the next time a foe casts dogs of war in combat

the only real (but highly undesirable) workaround is to cast the air 5 celerity (more initiative) spell on all your heroes so that they can defeat your foe before your foe can take their fist turn of combat

3) SOMETIMES but not always the game lists the wrong net mana per turn in the icon at the top of the display. the only sure way to know if an error was made is to reboot the game and reload the save file. (NOTE - much rarer but occasionally the game lists the wrong research per turn)

notice I did NOT say just reload the save file. if you do this then the well known MEMORY LEAK issue will degrade the game graphics after each loaded game, eventually causing the game to crash after several times of loading a game

this BUG may seem a quibble but for me is an ongoing headache since tracking research and net mana lets me know how rapidly I am progressing in the game

I do not know of any other 4x games which has ever had the problem of compiled data that must constantly be checked to see if it is correct

this BUG is part of a bigger but probably not fixable bug of the game failing to update dynamically as a turn progresses. for example if you conquer a city the new city outlines may not be correct. similarly razing a city does NOT dynamically visually adjust the faction border outlines. similarly in most cases settling a city which IS contiguous with your capital city incorrectly gives the minus 15% city unrest debuff, an error that AT THE SOONEST will be fixed next game reload or next game turn. this error may persist for many turns but it mysteriously fixes itself

I can live with the bad tile faction ownership info (mousing over a tile always correctly reveals which faction if any owns it) & knowing the non contiguous debuff BUG is not real (or at any rate not anything I can fix), but continually wasting time rebooting the game each turn just to find out the correct current net mana per turn is an ongoing headache

4) funky file names. you can rename a file with special characters like ',' and '%' and open them with load game. you can paste these file names with special characters into the save file name pick box and the file WILL save correctly. however if you try to type these special characters in manually (rather than pasting them in) the file name pick name box editor will NOT accept these characters. what a pain having to constantly rename my file names to LEGAL file names in my file browser rather just typing these file names in the pick name box. or is there a special hot key to force the file name pick box to accept LEGAL special characters??

I tried to solve the dogs of war bug. with mods OFF kennel master (the custom ruler trait that unlocks the dogs of war spell) is not a pick for a custom ruler

I loaded my first mod (NOT the dogs of war mod) and mysteriously with mods ON the kennel master shows up as a custom ruler trait that can be picked. I found that odd since the mod had to do with dragons, not dogs of war

so I uninstalled the one mod from the C drive FE LH user folder and turned off mods and kennel master went away as expected. however if I turn mods ON with no mods added to the mods folder kennel master again appears as a pick

I tried reinstalling the steam version 3.01 of the game but this not solve anything. (the gog.com version 3.00 also unlocks kennel master with mods on)

so this is a BUG of the unmodded game code that only reveals itself when mods are turned ON ... and perhaps at least one mod has been added to the mods folder

desperate I tried installing the actual dogs of war mod

with mods turned ON the kennel master was a choice but unexpectedly if any faction has a ruler or hero with this trait casting the spell dogs of war will still hang the combat ... even though dogs of war game assets are now defined

to summarize if I play with even one mod loaded and mods turned ON I have to endure the dogs of war bug. if my stack easily is more powerful I will still win the combat -- but I recently came across a foe army stack more powerful that my army whose ruler could cast dogs of war and auto resolve ended in defeat for me (obviously I am unable to have any of my own game tactics for combat with auto resolve)

to answer the first obvious reply to this post, NO,  clicking on the game combat advance icon does NOT work. instead the game just continues to hang up forever. the only way for a bugged dogs of war combat to end it to click the auto resolve button
