The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

I just finished a small/abundant/maso victory by rushing and allying. Rapid trading, early rush, and overwhelming numbers got me the win by 87, but the score was abysmal. :(

I can't believe it only scored 3500.

congrats, Ray.

Gengsta, one of your games has a listed difficulty of "suicidal." How did you get that?
It was a game that came from 1.01. The game was started on normal AI, but 1.05 didn't process it correctly.
I don't think I'll be submitting the newest maso score. Most of them are already dragging down my overall.

That's the reason why I said earlier that pure maso players wouldn't do well in the Metaverse.

Smaller Maso games are usually pure military and the game ends very quickly. You wouldn't have played enough SimGC to clock up the score. In addition, you are also probably beaten to most of the early TGs/Wonders.

I understand. I think I'm going to play small/maso maps for fun now. No point in trying to score them.

As for the larger ones, I might give them a shot. But as of right now I have not had any success.

Using the power of the Ring to alter the Metaverse, are we Ray? Be careful of that thing, it serves only one master and he does not have a blue face! But congrats on #1. :CONGRAT:

Congratulations to the mighty wizard known only as "Ray the Wanderer" for his number 1 ranking.

His true origins and identity are unknown to us; so deeply shrouded in mystery that even the Force cannot penetrate the truth. Although, this effect is likely enhanced by a spell or two created by the mighty wizard's own hand.

Hey Ray I got this great plan to rocket our empire back to the top of the chart. All we have to do is give Staffa, Pontius, and EBZero one way tickets to some tropical island with scantilly clad women and NO COMPUTERS
End of quote

Um, OK, now I'm thinkin, if you got the tickets, the island and the SCW lined up, you might just wanna maybe think about using those tickets yourself =)

I think we could accomplish the same thing by magically disconnecting them from the internet.

The Force in Middle Earth may indeed have unknown consequences that we cannot forsee. Especially if The One Ring finds this power and is able to use it to its benefit. The Dark Side is a powerful foe and The One Ring would seek to use it against all that is good.

What's that gold thing there Ray? Hmmm... mighty impressive. Apparently it was not the true Ray the Wanderer enjoying the pleasures of our brig. Bask in your glory while it lasts. There are a few pirates who will offer you more than words of congratulations. ;)

No worries, Kit. I believe my ole Protection from Evil, 10' Radius and Protection from Backstabbing spells are still online.

The Fellowship just squeaked over the 400,000 mark.
Good job, guys!

The Game of the Month for late July is up. Participate in force and try to claim that victory.

This time it's a diplomatic challenge. See how well you can convince everyone to ally with you.

Way to go Ray. Although it is slightly discouraging to those of us 1 person empires that even the top scoring player on Metaverse could not be in the top 10 empires if he broke away from the Fellowship and formed his own personal empire : (

YOU know Ray. I feel so guilty about taking that prized Silver medal from you last week, I thought I'd give it back to ya. No need to thank me. I'll just keep this ugly gold one. No No!!! I won't hear of it. The Silver is yours. I know how much you like it.

Enjoy it while it last, Pontius. I'm finishing up on a Medium Crippling. The one week break I took really helped because I'm all geared up for Galciving now. :)

GamingHyena,

Thanks. The age of one-man empires have passed and it would take a least 2-3 top players just to crack into Top 10.

Why don't you consider joining one of the bigger theme empires? It's not just the competition, it's also the comaradarie with other gamers. The doors of the Fellowship are open to you.

Go for it, Ray, bring back the gold. I just started the GotM. This one looks very interesting, and the diplomatic juggling has yet to start. I wonder what I am going to do about those pesky minors and the Yors.

No No No I won't hear of it. You go ahead and keep the Silver. It's all yours. I'll just keep this ugly gold one.
