The Prancing Pony

The welcome sight of a tavern greeted the weary traveler as he moved within distance of the town. Having traveled for many days, he longed for a cool mug of ale to slake his road-thirst.

As he approached the inn, he could see a sign of a fat pony rearing up on its hindlegs. The letters, THE PRANCING PONY, was painted in white.

The common room was large and rowdy. A bald and overweight innkeeper stood bent over the counter, whispering the latest gossip into the ears of a patron. On the benches were various folks, the local drunks for most part, but in corners of the taverns, he noticed there were groups drinking by themselves.

Setting himself down, the traveler handed a couple of coppers over to one of the bar wrenches for ale.

“Welcome to the Pony.” The traveler was mildly surprised to find a sprightly old man next to him, holding his gaze with keen eyes that belittled his obvious antiquity.

“Thank you, and whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?”

“Folks around here call me Ray and I do enjoy meeting up with newcomers to see if there is any assistance I could render.”

“That would be great, Ray. I would love to learn about the people who reside in these parts.”

“Ah, that’s a frequently asked question and one I’m well qualified to answer. There are a couple of factions here in Meta that you will want to watch out for.

The Pirates are currently dominant. Not the most refined of speakers but they are a jovial bunch, with a particular weakness for good drinks.

The Diplomats hold power in the Courts. Their courtiers are many but they don’t really mix with us common folks.

The Farmers are our working class. Hardworking and honest, they are however on occasion given over to overly elaborate festivals and celebrations.

The Galahs are a group of seafarers. They are also good trainers of livestock.

The Warlords are our warrior class. Their love for long campaigns leaves them frequently out of town.

The Spiders monopolise our merchant guilds. They are by far the most invertebrate bunch of traders you will ever see.

Far to the north, the Undead holds a death grip over the wastelands. I would caution you against traveling down that road.

There are many other smaller factions around, but I leave the details of those to Barley our bartender.

One of our tavern regulars, Gerakken the Spymaster, is also in the know with regards to many of the factions. So do buy him a drink if you want to find out more.”

“Thanks for the insights, Ray. But how about yourself, which faction do you belong to?”

Smiling to himself, the old man stood.

“Come round the Fellowship Halls tomorrow morning and I’ll show you around.”

Ughhh. What's this I see? A Neutral Pontius?!? That looks as unbecoming on you as the ugly gold.

Haha well My wife is quite fond of the gold. Iit looks more becoming on me than on you. Although that bronze you had really made you look butt ugly. You're just not a bronze person. Silver. Yup, that's your color. Yup. Definitely a silver person. And stop smiling so much. It makes you look like a simpleton.

GamingHyena,Thanks. The age of one-man empires have passed and it would take a least 2-3 top players just to crack into Top 10.Why don't you consider joining one of the bigger theme empires? It's not just the competition, it's also the comaradarie with other gamers. The doors of the Fellowship are open to you.

How do I join?

You have to quit your current empire, GH. Then click the Join Empire button on this page http://www.galciv.com/metaverse/empires.asp?id=329

And thus the mighty wizard sends another body over the MWC's way in the end. But I cannot complain. You got another lone gunman off the street and into a real empire. Afterall, a one person empire that never grows makes for only an empire of ego.

Sigh, I hope my charity to other empires will be rewarded someday, Gerakken.

Staff in hand, Ray the Wanderer sets off again down the dusty road - a guide's work is never finished...

Well just completed my first Huge Map with a beyond human victory. I owned everything and made all teh TGS and wonders and I only got 5159 points! LOL! Looks like thge only way to get any real points in this game is military conquext on huge maps... HO-HUM....

Looks like you've got an anomalous as well, Theleb. Trying resubmitting that game if you still have the save.

Yeah, tech victories are poor scorers. You probably have gotten 10k with a military win on that map.

Hmm, for some reason, I tend to score very well at Medium maps. I have absolutely no idea why though.

Ahh, taking back the gold. Very nice, Ray. Maybe this time you'll keep it for longer than a couple hours.

Dredging up older posts as well as new, I personally find it discouraging that if you play straightforward and submit all your games, you really torpedo your score. If I had had any idea that this would be the case, I of course wouldn't have done it :notsure: .
I'd like to see them add an 'unsubmit' button to the metaverse, but would have to think out the full consequences.

Congrats to Ray for his double victory :CONGRAT:

Well, I finally get to post again :)

I see myself as an elvin wizard (for you storyboard types). I'm 24 and I just bought a new place, so my submitting as been almost non-existent (sorry about that Ray).

I will probably be more involved again once I move into my new place at the end of this week.

5 games this past half month is hardly non-existant, philopoemen!

Great to have you posting again!

ThelebK,

I think we just played the same game. I finished with a tech victory for 4,500 points. The cutscene is really cool, but the score isn't.

I then reloaded a few turns earlier and won about 9 turns before Final Frontier with a Military Conquest -- 11,250 points.

I submitted the Military Conquest game, even though it's the first time I made it through the tech tree. I don't know I'd go for a tech victory unless it's the only way I can win. I really don't care much about my score, I have no illusions about being very good - but I do care about my empire's score.

Happy Raiding,
Cypher

:)

That was a really fun game. The Torians grabbed twice as many worlds as any of the other AIs right off the bat, so I was fighting a constant proxy war against them. It ended with me touring the galaxy with a fleet of six culture stars and assimilating everyone--it was the first time I've ever used terror stars in a practical way.

I want to start another game right now :) Too bad I have a job to go to :(

Plephart and the mwc police walk into the village. Aha!!!! an admission of guilt. You are milking, And crippling level too, that's one down from where you should be!!!

Ray: But Paul, I milked no game, I don't know why I even scored Hi. And how does your boy kryo get away with it? Hnmmm Oh and those are nice Buzz light year Pj's by the way. Nice. (snicker Snicker)

Pajama Boy:
SILENCE!!!! name caller. Don't you know by now facts are lost on me. And asking for consistency merely makes me angry. They both sail right over my head. You are under arrest. As is your entire empire of sandbaggers. Come peaceably.

Ray: Sandbaggers? why we have the hardest average difficulty in the metaverse, Just what are you talking about. Don't you ever stop with the felgacarb? Ray, clearly disturbed at this point, utters a reference to his old Gallactica Days And from the wrong Gallactica show to boot.

Poof: Pontius appears. "Congrats on #1 Ray. I'll see if I can give ya any comp now that Staffa appears retired. Oh nice Pj's there Paul (snicker snicker) Ray, his mommy says he's up too late again, just transport him back to bed."
Poof:

Ray "Roson Cobar" Poof: Paul and his ourgang of lil rascals are transported back into bed where they belong. Thanks Pontius."
